I finally bought a PS3 a couple months back so I'm trying to build up my collection, and I thought a game like Heavy Rain, that was supposedly groundbreaking, would be a good one to add (but only if I enjoy playing it too, I dont add them to my collection if I dont like to play them, causes that pretty pointless to collect games you dont like, even if they are worth money, imo). So was it good or bad ?

My main point of this thread is, I'm a collector and I wanna hear about other peoples collections. I dont trade anything in, I wanna eventually have a ridiculously huge collection, kinda like how Jay Leno, has a ridiculous amount of cars lol. I keep everything, I've had almsot every console theres been, and I still have just about every game I owned, including my commodore 64 games lol. My prized possesion is my mint condition copy of Chorno Trigger, with the case, and yes, the case is in near perfect condition, and its one of the most valuable games out there. I wanna frame it eventually lol So what about you guys, what kind of collections do you guys have going on. Anyone else out there love to collect gaming history like me? I wanna start getting into stand-up arcade machines (forgot what the technical name for these are). I'm looking into buying a Galaga one here pretty soon ! And I know a guy who can repair ones if I find any that just work (the galaga one doesnt need anywork, and its gonna only run me abut 500$ which I heard isn't bad at all for an old, good condition one)

So I have games for - NES/SNES/N64/GameCube/Wii, SEGA/CD/32x, (oh and all the different gameboys, except I dont have a lot of GBA or DS games, at least not a lot compared to the other systems I have, but I'm buying more as I go, cause GBA had so many awesome RPGs on it), PS1/PS2/PS3, Xbox/Xbox360, and of course I got a lot of PC games. I also got a few Atari games, and a BIG box full of Commodore 64 games like I said, i.e. Airborne Rangers, Black Gold (please tell me someone remembers this game, it was simulator game for running a Oil Business, it was so fucking awesome lol) those two are my favorites, I got a lot more tho. So yea, that a brief rundown on what I got. Whos next ? Lets hear about your collection, and what got you into it and why ?

I went from collector to anti collector over the last few months. I had 8 or 9 old consoles, portables, and multiple huge boxes full of games (mostly PC games and cartridge console games), another box of just wiring, an old TV with the ghetto RF input, a box of controllers and old joysticks... I gave away or threw out almost everything and traded in my PS3 games that I was not actively playing. Now I have *one* PS3 game and every PC game I own is now on Steam. Might kick myself in the ass for this later, however my house certainly feels much cleaner!

$500 is a good price for any working arcade cabinet in decent condition.

I used to be, but ended up having to sell my collection a few years ago. Now I just buy what I play and nothing more. I don't care about collecting these days. There are some rare and expensive games I want, but just to play them.

I have most every console up to this last generation with the usual suspects. FFII, FIII, mario rpg(snes), etc. Personal prize pieces are original mint Silent hill(PSX non-GH), Sega Saturn Dragon Force, Shining Force III, Rayearth Magic knights, few other rare things not coming to me. I tend to collect things I like and frankly nothing from this generation has interested me in the slightest. I have a copy of REZ for sentimental reasons. Same for things like Shenmue on dreamcast.

To my knowledge strictly speaking mainstream releases(non glitch covers or other weirdness) The grand poobah is panzer dragoon saga (English) and Radiant Silver Gun(Sat.) However now that one or both are available in other formats their value may have gone down.

One thing thats still my wishlist is a neo-geo pocket color with some games but I lost interest in collecting old stuff and Steam eats up all my money now.

I use to collect console games but I find that with my current tight money situation I can't simply keep packing up the games and not take advantage of reselling them on Ebay.

I watch the Angry Video Game Nerd all the time and am in awe of his amazing collection. I wish I had such a collection.

Used to collect PC games but since I've converted to Steam I haven't felt the need. I parted with my N64 but I still have my games for it. Wish I still had that system but I don't feel motivated enough to buy a used one.

I am a game collector and I always buy retail for that reason. Especially the collector's or special editions to get all the extra goodies!

No, I'm not. Once I've finished with a game I try and flog it (if possible)

I stopped buying them when they started making TOO MANY collector's editions and with TOO MUCH GARBAGE in them. Just give me a steel case and an artbook. Or a cloth map and a Lunar pendant. The current collector's editions are jokes and I'd consider them anti-collector because they take up way too much space and come with stuff you'd be embarrassed to display. CE's need to be kept classy, like the PSX Working Designs games. I don't need some stupid ass fake night vision goggles or a pandora's box replica.

I used to be, but found out it just took far too much space. I still have 30-40 PS2 games (I want to get rid of about half of these), and maybe 100 current generation games for all consoles. My main collection now is Steam, with somewhere around 300 games.

I just realized that there really are few games I will ever play in the future. Out of the 16-bit and 32-bit eras, some RPGs stand out as keepers: Chrono Trigger, Final Fantasy VI-IX, Lufia 2, Suikoden II,III,V, Megaten games, etc...Outside of a dozen games or so, it's really not worth keeping my entire collection around. I started getting rid of games just to make space. I've limited myself to the amount of space I have in my new bookshelves. If it's full and I want to buy something, then I need to get rid of something to make room for it.

I'm a game collector. I use to only buy games after I beat the previous one, but once I played Myst (my most hated game ever), I put it away without ever beating it and bought a new one. Sadly, I found that I was beating fewer and fewer games, while buying new games more and more often. It got to the point where I was buying games without actually ever playing them, and then to a point where I bought games without ever playing them, nor any intention to actually play them.

As far as my pride and joy when it comes to games, I'd have to say it's my Sierra collection. I own every Sierra game ever made before 1995 with the exception of 1 (Ultima: Escape From Mount Drash).

As far as the collection itself, it's fairly large, but it's mostly in storage now. (I only know less than a dozen people who have a larger collection, and none personally).

I was, but it's gotten to the point that most of the PC games I have collected over the years will never be played again. There's a select few that I will keep, but the rest of them are going in the trash along with the hardware I used to play them on. Keeping this shit around another 10-20 years makes no sense.

I only collect the collectable copies of the games.
or ones that have better then average boxes.

Also if you can buy a limited copy that comes with some sort of swag i'll buy that instead of the vanilla copy.

I like having those pieces.

I used to collect games & systems but moving into a smaller apartment meant consolidating a lot of stuff and selling things off :(

As far as space being a concern (as that seems to be a reason why many people don't collect games), there are ways to optimize it so you can have a lot of games without sacrificing a ton of space.

As an example, here is my GameCube collection:

There are 103 Game Cube games in there, along with some DS games to act as filler for the extra space. The boxes can easily be stacked without damaging the games (or game boxes). Unless you're talking a collection of thousand of games, a single decently sized closet can hold a lot. Even with PC games and when they came in large boxes, the same thing can be done. PC Games are actually easier because for the most part, they're significantly less dense, allowing for you to stack higher.

Nowadays I mostly buy my games digitally, so I can have a pretty massive collection without needing any physical space to keep it in. I still have a whole bunch of hard copies of older games, but it's unlikely that I'll be adding to those.

No I'm not

Well, unless you count Steam where I tend to buy packs that are on sale. Like how I have all Ghost Recon title although I bought it for the latest 2 titles :D

I don't ever trade my games in. Off the top of my head, I probably have about six or seven hundred games (physical media, I hate digital distribution) on about 15 different consoles/handhelds.

I have about 400-500 pc games total i've collected since the early 90's up to the present although i do not have a huge amount of PS3 games since i play the PC more nowadays.
Wish i still had my old amiga 500 as i had a ton of games for it and for its day was an amazing computer imho.
As for storage, i have one of those wall mounted CD racks that hold hundred's of cd's and use that and keep the boxes/info i don't need stored in the attic.. :)
I pretty much keep the old 3.5 games/floppies stored away as i most likely will never use them but they are they if i do.
Been mainly using steam lately so not as much physical media nowadays. (I do buy older games i miss or want to play tho if i can't find on steam or D2D)

I used to but my house is too small. A combination of books, blu rays, xbox games and pc games just makes my room cluttered. I ended up throwing the pc retail boxes away and organize an excel sheet with CD key and put the CDs in a CD case that can hold a ton of CDs.

I've got about 10 games out on loan right now.

I think collecting games is a rather mute/pointless endeavour because of the rate at which storage space and internet bandwidth increases over time. Particularly, if you think about people who collected 1,000 Sega Genesis games.

Now adays, you can visit a rom site and download 1000 Sega Genesis games with roms at 200kb-600kb each in roughly 15 minutes if that. Take an even older system like the Nintendo(original, not super) and an entire game is will be 60kb where downloading 5,000 of those games only takes 5 minutes. Really, showing off 5,000 boxes that completely fills every inch of three closets in your house and two complete rooms will make people think your a horder.

Show 2GB usb-flash drive that contains every mega system, nintendo, super nintendo, sega genesis, aracde game machine from 1960-1995, GB, GB Color, GBA games and the appropriate emulators. In that 1 tiny little 2GB usb-flash drive, theres a much more 'cool' factor and a less 'creepy horder' factor.

The funny thing is, the same amount of data, 2GB worth of data, when all those products were 'new' well, we had 40MB hard drives, you'd need to use a good 50 hard drives or so minimum to store that information which would not have the cool portability factor and would have once again been expensive + horder-ish. Now a days, you can get a 2GB data stick for $9.99 or $4.99 if on sale. If you stop and consider that for a moment.

In probably 10 years from now, you'll be able to store maybe 1,000 700mb isos of games from the 90s-early 2000s that used to come on cds for a similar price of $9.99. Since that would only require a 700GB flash drive and today, we can already buy 256GB flash drives. I think there may even be 512GB flash drives available out there. So >700GB can't be that far off. Perhaps 2 years and give another 8 years and they'll be become quite a bit cheaper.

So in 10 years, I'll be able to reproduce your game collection in the size of my pinky finger which'll have a lot more of a cool factor, no? Perhaps every game made from the 1960s on every system up to somewhere in the 1990s with appropriate emulators that only costed me $9.99. Versus if I bought all of that at new prices, would have probably costed me maybe $200,000 or so in new-purchase costs and another $100,000 or so in storage space over the 30+ years.

No, I buy a few games that I like and save the rest of my money for other bigger purchases.

thats awesome ! I will have to post a pic of my collection, of course it may take a couple pics to get them all. I have all mine on shelves I made and mounted to my wall. I love having them on my wall for some reason. I'm actually looking into getting some type of glass display case for my super-valuable games, like Chrono Trigger, the 1st Parasite Eve and Resident Evil. I also have the original Pokemon Red and Blue, from the first copies released ). Most people I know who have those, have copies from mass produced shipments. but Mine are from the first group of cartridges ever made, I believe its from the first 500 copies made or something like that, which is kinda rare to see, since most people who bought them when they first came out. either lost or broke their copies long ago. and I have quite a few other so-called "Antique" Games and I want them taken care of (I'm a lil OCD when it comes to my Games and my Music Gear) I'm trying to get all of the original Resident Evil PS1 copies (disc and cases) I have the original PS1 RE 1, and RE 3 (no case tho, so I need to find a case for it), but I need to get the others. I'm also trying to find mint copies of the original Fear Effect 1 and 2 games for PS1, which I believe are one of the best PS1 games, most people never heard of, let alone actually have played. FE 1 and 2, were so fucking addicting and dope (so if anyone has or knows where I can get a copy of FE 1 or 2, or both, please PM me asap)......I'm lucky I have a GF who is understandable about this. We plan on moving in soon, and shes totally down with making room for my gaming stuff, not to mention shes letting me have a room dedicated to my Music and Home Recording Studio, cant ask for a better GF then that lol I really wish I woulda been able to find more of the original Final Fantasy games. All I have is FF VII, FF VIII, FF VIIII, and then the new FF XIII (which I almsot bought for my 360, but I got it on PS3 instead, just seemed fitting to me) I have the older FF games too, but there all just ROMS, on my Android Phone (Droid 2 Global). So whats your guys prize possesion, the one that you would kill for lol

EDIT - Just found this on Half.com - http://product.half.ebay.com/Final-Fantasy-VII-Sony-PlayStation-1997/2434&tg=videtails&item=340685366645 - He's selling his copy of FF VII, which is still in the shrink wrap, for 400$. my Copy is not in the shrink wrap, but it still has all the booklets and what not, and the discs have no scratches, so if this is a legitimate pricing, then mine should be worth close to 200$ you would think. What do you guys think of how much this guy is selling it for ?

You can buy FFVII on the PSN for like $10

Are Fear effect 1 and 2 rare :D I've got them ona shelf with a load of PS/PS2 games (including every FF game (except XIV + some duplicates) I used to get for $10/free because I worked in a game shop. Must have hundreds, but never counted.

I have about 140 games on steam...

That's not how pricing for sealed collectible games vs used complete games works.

The original Mass Effect collector's edition goes for about $80 used on eBay.

Go ahead and look for yourself to find out how much they want for a sealed copy.

Anyone that actually pays $400 when there are multiple cheaper ones is an idiot. He doesn't even say if its black label or Greatest Hits. Suikoden II and Panzer Dragoon Saga some of the rarest games ever released in the US don't command that kind of price unopened, no way in hell FFVII should.

It's supply vs demand. I own a few games which you can't even find online to pirate. I'd probably get less than $10 though if I sold them on EBay. (I'm talking actual retail games, a couple of which even sites like IGN, MobyGames, and people on Wikipedia think are myths).

Games which sell well tend to sell better in the long run, even more than cult classics. Suikoden 2 & Panzer Dragoon Saga are more like cult classics. They'll get a good price, sure, but they won't get a great price, and that's partly due to most people not knowing those games should you mention them. But Final Fantasy 7? I've heard of that!

Still looking for a cheap copy of the suikoden II prima guide. I just wanna read the damn thing. Can even find a scan :(

Also note. I was in an EB games 13 years ago and they had Shining Force III and Panzer Dragoon Saga. Both were $30-50. I only had enough for one and I got shining Force III. Great game but I'm still mad I didn't get PDS :(

I have about 15 PS1 and 25 PS2 games that I won't sell if i can help it. There's been too many times where I've sold a game only to buy it again because i want to play it. Those are mainly PS1 platformers though.

I collect games on Steam :p

x2 lol.

I've got 10-20 PC games on discs but I just burn those into .iso files and record the key and I'm all set.
I'll never buy the more expensive LE or CE games...not worth it IMO.
With the steam sales I'm able to pick up a lot of games I wouldn't normally buy which introduces me to different game types.
Digital distribution will eventually take over IMO.

Do you guys just keep your games stored or tucked away? I've collected about 60-70 games, but I try to lend them out to friends, cousins, and neighbors in the hopes some will actually try playing them. Occasionally this happens, but... not as often as I'd like. I don't like putting games away because I know I might never bother replaying them, so I'd rather give someone else a shot at trying something out. But since everyone goes gaga for the latest and greatest consoles (current generation, I guess), no one wants to try out previous generation tech. :\

Collecting games seems too close to hoarder -- without getting any value out of it.

Now board games, that's another story. There's fun to be had for everyone! Hah.

No I never ever lend out my games, everything is in boxes and totes, but if I actually ever ran into someone else who has a Sega Saturn I'd be shocked.

I do! With nights into dreams and all the sonic games and loaded and...etcetc. Never did get panzer dragoon though... :(

If we count Steam, sure. Otherwise, no. At least not in this manner.

Many years ago, I was following a development of a highly anticipated game, which pretty much flopped the day it was released. However, prior to the release I have collected many artifacts from all over the world that were related to the said game in one way or another. I still have all the items in a closet, but unless someone is an avid collector of things like that, none of them are really worth anything.

For those who wonder, the game in question is Hellgate: London.

I have no problem admitting I'm a hoarder. I collect tons of stuff, and not just video games. People have different priorities, especially when it comes to money. Twenty years ago, even owning one video game and not being a child would be seen as a total waste of a human being. Now? The average age is in the mid 30's. The same thing with what you own. The value of your items is only defined by how much you care for it.

As for storage, for the most part, my games no longer are in my apartment. I just have way too many games to logically keep around. I pretty much keep them in containers in a storage facility. 20ftx10ftx10ft packed wall to wall, from floor to ceiling.

In terms of loaning games, it depends upon the rarity and value of the game. If it's a current generation game which incase of damage can be easily replaced, I'll loan it out. If it's a Vic-20 game where there are less than 100 known copies of the game, most likely it's staying where it's at.

I'm somewhat of a collector of Steam games, I've got over 80 right now but I've since slowed my shopping spree. I try to only buy games that I know i'll play and finish (if it's a sp game)

I used to have all of the consoles, and tons of classic games from about NES onwards (getting good Atari sticks was a PITA and I wasn't a big Atari guy anyway).

My first kid was about 2 years old (and my youngest a few weeks) when I realized I simply didn't have time for any of it any more. I barely have time for modern games. I still have about 15 games from the PS1/xbox/GC/PS2 era backlogged.

I needed the money anyway, so off to ebay most of it went, and I sold a good hunk of it over time to a forum buddy who was another oldschool collector (he runs sashimigames.com selling classic / complete games).

There's other ways to play old games if I get the itch. I still have some of the side stuff - instruction manuals/maps/etc for FF1/2/3; I kept my original copy of Dragon Warrior IV and all of the stuff that goes with it (it's my favorite NES game). I was just arguing with the wife to get rid of the NES and the SNES I had in a box to reduce clutter. She wants to play Bugs Bunny's Crazy Castles and some other stuff. I pointed out no one had touched the box in years, and she could always play emulated if she wants, or play our Virtual Console games on the Wii. No luck yet.

I still have a modded Sega Saturn in a box...always mean to get around to playing Panzer Dragoon Saga and a few other gems...never get around to it. Too busy with kids and work. At night time I tend to be on XBL playing games with my buddies.

I've kept around PS1 RPGs, PS2 games, and a handful of classic PC games (Betrayal at Krondor, BG1/2, Heroes 3, Pool of Radiance, Master of Orion 2, etc...) but I rarely get around to playing anything these days. If I do, it's on the Wii or the Xbox 360, or occasionally a PC game.
