My work has both NVME type and M.2 sata drives. Am I wrong in that they are different tech and needs different adapters?
I need one or both for saving data or slicking drives for re-image. Can anyone suggest one? Thank you all!!

You don't need any kind of adapters. m.2 is designed to support multiple protocols. If the keying on the mainboard's m.2 slot matches up with the SSD you should be fine, but double-check that the mainboard does support both protocols.

If you're doing a bunch of SSDs and/or expecting this to be an ongoing thing, you may want to instead consider a m.2/USB adapter. The SATA ones are reasonably cheap and plentiful. The NVMe ones are kinda rare, expensive, and seem to have some compatibility issues, however.

So I ordered this one and this one. Thinking mine might not be the U.2 version, will see.

Those should work fine. That one having UASP might make it faster.

u.2 is more of an enterprise-level thing, used to connect 2.5" form-factor NVMe SSDs to the mainboard/controller. Not something you'll run into for desktops/laptops or most workstations.

I believe neither of those are NVMe. The StarTech one explicitly states it's only compatible with SATA and the Vantec only mentions SATA (i.e. doesn't mention NVMe as a supported protocol).

You'll probably need separate adaptors for each type because I haven't seen an adaptor that does both.

I can't really offer an opinion on which adaptors to get, I've seen them used but I haven't taken not of which ones they were :(

Thanks guys! I will receive them today, overnighted them from Newegg. We will see what I can do with them. Might have to order some more. I am glad that technology has moved to this level, but hope they get it to a more common adapter.
