Sure, Luke could be gay, even though he kissed his sister, coupled with Mara Jade in the EU, and may be revealed to have a daughter in Episode VIII.

The Luke Skywalker originator spoke with Britain's The Sun earlier this week and confirmed that the Chosen One's sexual orientation is up for interpretation. Responding to sentiments from director J.J. Abrams that it would be nice for the franchise to incorporate some non-heterosexual characters, Hamill said: "...fans are writing and ask all these questions, 'I'm bullied in school... I'm afraid to come out'. They say to me, 'Could Luke be gay?' I'd say it is meant to be interpreted by the viewer... If you think Luke is gay, of course he is. You should not be ashamed of it. Judge Luke by his character, not by who he loves.”

Fine leave it open to interpretation. Overtly painting him as gay now would just piss a lot of people off. And not just gay bashers. A lot of people have read the novels, and while in them Luke is not some lady's man like ole Han is, he is pretty clearly hetero. People really don't care for dbags that like to muck up canon for a PC marketing check box. And that would be all it would be for, because it would ad nothing to the universe.

BTW, Mark Hamil can play an awesome gay. His acting in Sushi Girl as a gay was top notch imo.

I think this needs to be more of a thing. Is Luke gay? "does it matter? He can be, who cares!"

unless someone's orientation has something to do with the story, why does it matter? Until Luke's Husband/Wife walks out and says that dinner is ready, its ALL up for interpretation.

they could always make the ex storm trooper gay or the ace pilot or ANYONE ELSE this whole gays wanting representation in everything is pissing me off same with trans people yes you both need better treatment but the world should not bend to your every whim and will...

If these kids think being bullied would be easier if Luke was gay, then what? Does every fictional character need to be gay for their life to be easier?

That's a bit of an over-extrapolation. Mainly, they (the gay community) want one or two gay heroes, and have never asked for anything else.

QUICK! name one summer action movie featuring a gay protagonist.

I said QUICK.

I'll wait.

Deadpool
iceman
wolverine

Wolverine is displayed in the films as heterosexual.
Iceman? The one who crushes on Rogue?
Deadpool, who spends his entire movie trying to fix his face up for his girlfriend/fiancée?

You're going to have to do better than fail.

I'm pretty sure Whis from Dragonball Super is gay, and he's the strongest character in the DB Multiverse with the possible exception of his sister Vados.

Whis is definitely a character that CAN be interpreted as gay, especially the husband/wife relationship he has with Beerus. However I would hardly call Dragonball a summer action movie, and I would hardly call either of those characters protagonists.

why not kenobi or quaigon

People were so pissed when George changed it so Han didn't shoot first..

Without being too condescending, I asked about summer action movies. NOT comics. Comics, due to their periodic distribution and highly focussed, younger and less traditional audience can afford to take risks and be more forward-thinking.

Movies on the other hand are much larger, higher-budget works that require tens of millions of dollars to make a profit, and this means movie makers don't take risks unless they absolutely HAVE to. This means that gay characters, ESPECIALLY gay protagonists are RISKY; Which is a terrible thing to admit, and the ONLY way it is going to change is if we introduce one or two gay protagonists and show the world "See, its not that bad!".

No it's just current Japanese anime characters male characters are being drawn with female characteristics. It's frankly disturbing at times but I've moved on from anime.

But if it's not something that actually matters in the story... why does it matter if the characters are gay, straight, bi, trans, whatever?

Its representation. While its easy to shrug off the idea of representation from the standpoint of the majority, it really does matter: We can easily find a protagonist character that matches our sexual preferences/skin colour/religion, so we take it for granted. Other people who don't fit the bill find a society that says their kind is not fit to be the hero. Their kind is 'risky' to give much screen-time to, and politically volatile.

Despite a relationship not being important at ALL to the story, many action movies have the protagonists express interest in a heterosexual relationship, and in the times when a relationship IS important for the story: its a heterosexual relationship. So yeah, it's not hard to see that there REALLY isn't much in the way of representation.

A gay monk?

Wow. How risqué!

How the hell are you supposed to pick a team when you don't even play the game?

IMHO, novels, comics, animated series, games are all non-canonical. (yes, I know the ancient Lucasfilm magazine defines it differently, and I don't care) The films are 100% of the story. If it's not in the (now 7) films, it is to be taken with a huge grain of salt. The films are the authority, and nothing else.

I'm not speaking out strongly on either side of the gay / non-gay side of things as Luke was concerned, but the fact that he seemed to have interest in Leia before he knew she was his sister, seems to suggest he was at the fer least bi.

To me - however - it is irrelevant. Star Wars isn't about sexuality. It's a story about corruption of power, and rebellion against totalitarianism, set in space. Lets just keep it that way. I know in the last 20 years there has been a desire to sex everything up in order to make it sell more, but that really just diminishes the whole thing, if you ask me.

that is simply not true there is a whole host of things that are canon yea most of the novels and comics and such are not but some novels in particular one that has mara jade mentioned as luke's wife is one as is the fact he had children the big boo boo that was made is ben solo was not supposed to be named ben solo he was supposed to be anakin solo... and luke's son was supposed to be ben skywalker han and leia were supposed to have 3 kids anakin and 2 twins the female twin was to be the one to kill anakin...

In other words, they threw out the novels. They took inspiration, but they ultimately tossed them into the 'non cannon' bin.

No, those are not canon. Disney specifically announced that none of the EU was canon, and that the only things currently canon are the movies, and at the time of the announcement the clone wars TV series. They specifically did that so they could ignore the massive mess of continuity that was the star wars EU when making 7-9.

The EU was never canon in the first place, really. Lucas never considered the EU stuff, whether it's books, comics, RPGs, video games, etc as part of his story. All of that was part of the huge Star Wars merchandising monster. He'd occasionally make suggestions or demands, but for the most part he left it up to the people in charge of those divisions.

Besides, it's not like losing the EU is that big of a loss. There were some good stories but most of it is either forgettable or just shit. There are cool things that writers of the movies and new novels can draw from, but everything being under a controlled continuity should be better in the long wrong.

Yes I know but they did keep a few books and comics it is only something like 17 things including the movies are Canon now I want to say 3 or 4 novels are 4 comics and both cartoon's and the 7 movies.

Frankly, those EU books are more canon than Episode 7 or anything else that has come out since Disney owned the franchise. George Lucas is no longer involved so the Disney stuff is basically its own continuity to itself.

Why are you pretty sure when no mention of Whis having a sexual preference is mentioned?
Because he watches over beerus?
I guess his sister vados which watches over champa is straight and in a sexual relation with him too?

New spiderman is gay.

I hate overly pc shit to appease a population and to get attention for the publicity. It shouldn't matter to the story line one way or the other.

Better treatment how?

At least now with Luke confirmed gay the incestuous kiss from the original trilogy is less incestuous. Knowing that he wasn't popping half a boner kissing his sister because he wasn't attracted to women sits better with me.

This is exactly what I was expecting after Abrams' comments. Sex really doesn't matter at all to the story, he gave a vague 'sure, there could be a gay character if you want' answer to blow off a stupid question.

Clickbait used as culture war nonsense.

If I had kids, these are the kind of questions I need to clear up with my kids after seeing an escapist movie? No thanks.

And this would kill international marketability. Not going to happen.

They really really need to just make a Young Avengers(based on the the NOW! books) and get all this crap aside.
The only time I care about gay/straight/trans-whatever is when I'm watching porn. Aside that, I don't really care. Now sure, I don't really have an interest in seeing two dudes make out in a romance movie, but that's simply because it's not my thing.

I challenge anyone to read Star Wars: Aftermath and then come back here and advocate for this kind of thing in the Star Wars universe. If THAT is how they see it being incorporated (i.e., hamfisted, sloppy, poorly executed, narratively shallow and nonsensical), then i cannot pass enough. And the LGBT community should as well.

why is it when their is hero many people can identity with not that I do in this case but some subculture always says but he or she has to be like me... then I wonder if they identified with the hero then hero was like them... must be they identify with the archetype then someone makes the character no longer match the archetype. funny it just proves that while sub cultures that want everyone to be like them instead of be like everyone else, only money really speaks everyone's language.

Personally I skipped the last movie... too many people trying to add their two cents and not enough people thinking about what the final image they presented looked like... it is like a mr potato head doll made by a blind committed. Sure it made money it is star wars but how much money was made off the toys because kids decided they wanted to be luke, laya, or hans? The joke about the first one is Lucus dreamed up this really crazy way to create heroes using the mayer briggs archetypes like inventor and such and then he had a couple people fund it which steered the direction of the movie... so clearly he knew at some point what was appealing... the question is what is appealing about a guy who kills his father, wants to sleep with his sister, and some one said he sleeps with the other guy too... isn't that a psychopath? I have no idea why he is the hero if all he does try to be everyone else... unless the joke is you are the hero they all fail to be.

What you've just said is one of the most insanely idiotic things I have ever heard. At no point in your rambling, incoherent response were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone in this room is now dumber for having listened to it. I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul.

I thought it was Old Ben.... Maybe Luke did finally go to the dark side... :)

I don't care if he's gay. I just want to watch Star Wars. If I want to watch a romantic comedy, I'll watch something else.

Agreed. The whole romance plot between Anakin and Padme in "Attack of the Clones" detracted rather than added to the film IMHO. In the original three films they worked in the budding romance between Han and Leia in a smoother less detracting way, IMHO, and that worked. You know, smooch on the side, now lets go fight the evil empire, and leave it at that. A side note, not the main story.

if they want to add a brief kiss between two men on the way to the battle, that's fine by me, I just don't need another extended bs romance story built in, gay or straight.

I kind of disagree. The romance between them was the cause for Anakin's fall to the dark side; his failure to eliminate emotional entanglements. So, it needed to focus prominently. That said, it didn't have to be so high-schoolish and poorly written.
