Hello,

I am currently speccing a new computer for a friend and looking for the best available HDD in respect to:
- 4 TB
- low noise
- reliable

The price does not matter, enterprise-grade with 10^-15 error-probability, 5 years warranty etc. is very fine. However, I doubt the 7200k drives are low-noise...

Any advice appreciated.

I have a WD Black 4TB drive sitting exposed on the desk hooked up via a USB3 ICY Dock interface. I can not hear this run at all, even when transferring 760GB of music to it (4+ hours). Has 5 year warranty and out of the 50 plus WD Black drives i used over the last 5 years I've only had one failure which WD advance replaced in just 2 days.

I have the feeling all those "NAS"-drive features like TLER, green, low-power etc. are not the best choice for normal day-to-day usage, are they?

If the WD black is not much louder than a normal WD green HDD, I would go with the black as the best consumer-compromise between green and reliable.

I have bought 200x1 TB hgst disks and 24x4TB coolspin deskstars (for the company I work for) and so far none have failed or have any issues under heavy load.

I also personally have 30x3TB HGST coolspin 30 of which were bought right before the thailand flooding. I run them 24/7 and so far none of them have had any issues what so-ever (not even any reallocated sectors, on any of the 50 disks!).

HGST is as reliable as it gets IMHO. I have been saying that for years but also backblaze who tested seagate/hgst/wd also agree HGST are the most reliable.

Here is the stats of my 3TB disks:

From 3 machines (4 chassis):

Re-alloc = re-allocated sectors
pend = pending re-allocation sectors (unreadable sectors)
PC = powercycle count
Days on= Number of powered on days.

Code:
# cat 50_hitachi | awk '$0=substr($0,1,35)"XXXXX"substr($0,40,length($0))'

You're going to pay a slight noise penalty with 7200rpm disks like Hitachi Ultrastar 7K4000's, WD RE4's, or Seagate Constellation ES.3's... but really depends how picky you are about noise.

If low noise and a smooth running drive is the utmost priority, quite a few I know like WD Red's, but those are only 5400rpm. SilentPCReview does pretty nice reviews including extensive acoustic testing, if that helps any...

Honestly, how a drive is handled between the process of getting from the reseller to the reseller stock shelf through the reseller picking process and then packaging and then shipping to your hands matters more than the individual manufacturer or model. Buy a retail boxed drive if you're that concerned about how reliable the drive will be, as that should (cross your fingers!) reduce the chance of handling damage.
