Loving the M-Audio M-42s

So a wee bit of backstory: for the past few years I have been using a 2.1 set of Swan M-10s. Never really been happy with them. They were pretty but that is pretty much where the positives ended for me. The left speaker hissed if left on for more than a few hours, audio clarity always felt mushy even to my non audiophile ears, and it would drop audio and or crackle if you had it adjusted to anything but certain spots on the volume knob. From day one that companies customer service has been frustrating for me, giving me the run around and offering minimal options at what would have been expense to me to correct the issues. It was really a frustrating experience for me. I would definitely not recommend these speakers to anyone.

I've been sticking with them out of stubbornness since I spent hard earned cashola on them.

I finally broke down and bought the newest version of the M-Audio 2.0s, the AV-42s. http://www.m-audio.com/products/view/av42

Now, it is only day one so we will see if my story changes, but I am really loving these things so far. The crispness and quality (again not an audiophile) of them is really great. They are very responsive, no hiss, and for just being a 2.0 their base is still quite nice for a computer set up. At a $150 price point I am very happy with them.

nice .. those look pretty good for the money certainly.

For my part I'm always happy to see anyone enjoying audio no matter what gear they are using, I mostly (by that i mean 99% of the time) listen to music on my speakers. my wife would lose her mind if i gamed with the speakers on

2.0 is perfect for Music and when you are 2~ft away from the speakers you ain't really going to need a sub anyways...(imho).

glad you are enjoying them, those certainly look worth a look for anyone looking in the price range.

cheer.

Thanks :)
Regarding the sub, even though I probably don't need it, because I can't ever leave well enough alone I am starting to scout out options on that front.

I found an old thread here from someone talking about using the prior version of these (the AV40) with a cheap sub and being pretty happy with it. Very tempted to do that myself.

Looking at this sub (once it drops in price a bit, its at a 6 month high at the moment)

Maybe using a Y splitter and crossover high pass for the speaker line like these, like discussed in that old thread?

I was looking at getting a pair of AV-40's for my second setup but found the BX5's on sale from Sam Ash on Amazon for $75/speaker so I went that route.

These are nice for what they cost.

A set of these with a reasonable sub is the first kit to out-play the Klipsch ProMedia 2.1's IMHO.
