Lost backup password

Hi all,

I have a friend who just bought an iphone 6+. She backed up her 5s but when she tried to restore to the 6+ it's asking for her encrypted backup password. She set it so long ago she doesn't recall what it is.

2 questions here in regards:

1) Is there a way to unlock the password with software like this: http://www.windowspasswordsrecovery.com/product/iphone-backup-unlocker.htm? Is this software just a ruse?

2) Is there any other possible way to recover this maybe with a L0phtcrack style program?

I think she is SOL.

Passwords for encrypted files are suppose to be unrecoverable for a reason.

If she didn't remember setting the password, it could be just "1234". From Googling, apparently it works for some people.

Some other passwords she could try is her Apple ID password (both case sensitive and all lowercase) and any old passwords she had associated with her Apple ID.

I was going to ask if you checked her Keychain, but I am assuming she is on a Windows machine?

She is indeed on a Windows machine. I think I ran across some of the articles you probably found then, because up until that point I had only ran across the software I previously mentioned as a possible lifesaver.

It's fun tho to think that we use passwords because we want security, while at the EXACT SAME TIME we also believe you can just download some tool off the internet and crack the password. We believe passwords are security devices, until we just find them annoying, in which case we run an exe and they are gone.
 
Ugh! I fell into the n00b necro-post. I guess that puts me into n00b zone.

But I more or less agree. We want everything to be secure, except from ourselves. There isn't a way to have it both ways, until I guess passwords are tied to some form of unfailing, unspoofable biometrics.
 
This is why I live the care free life of no back ups and no passwords, don't have to worry about anything.
