I need an external HDD for backing up my data, and after a rather unfortunate incident with an external WD drive I destroyed by dropping it just 2 cm, I am not willing to take chances anymore.

I need a durable and reliable solution with plenty of storage space (3 or 4 TB) and USB 3.0 connectivity. I read some reviews already but I'd also like to hear the opinions of fellow [H] forumers.

I carry my external hard drives around in a cardboard box. The drive enclosure is suspended in some foam. If I cut a hole in the box, I could run the cables to it.

I would suggest something similar if you have a problem in dropping things.

Pelican make a bunch of cases in different sizes if you are that interested.

If you want shock resistance, the only logical choice is to use 2.5" laptop drives. Consider using two or three of them for backup, if necessary.
