looking for something like this:
http://www.sansdigital.com/mobileraid/mr4ut.html

but reviews for san digital suck, i need something that is external, will give me 4tb of redundant storage after raid (so either 2x4tb drives in raid 1, or 3/4 x 3tb drives in raid 5 (prefer 6 but most dont give this option)

it needs to have USB 3 and esata and do the raid internally

suggestions?

long story short i know its not a great setup but its only for an offsite repository for appassure backups, they were using USB drives and every time they tank we need to reseed a few tb of data... stupid setup, the server is a power edge 2900, internal bays are full, and is has a couple of perc 5 cards for an external array already, so ill be adding an esata card for this, usb onboard is 2.0

What about something like enclosures from pc-pitstop.com

They have some rack mount 4 bay as well as stand alone 4 bay enclosures. Most of the enclosures that they make have ZERO intelligence, just a powersupply and a SFF connector.

In the past, I built a configuration with 8*3TB drives powered by an HP P412 card /w BBC (HP Proliant server) and it flew. The best part was that because the drives were just drives, HP still supported the card when I needed tech support.

Instead of an eSATA card I would just use a SATA=>eSATA bracket, I expect there are native SATA ports available on the mobo.

the esata bracket might be a good idea, ill check the mobo, i know it has scsi but usually they have a few sata ports

I am looking for a case with >2 disks, each having individual eSATA cables. With a port multiplier you can use one single eSATA cable to drive all disks, but it gets messy with Solaris and ZFS. So I prefer individual eSATA cables.

I can buy several single disk cases, but it is easier to have several disks in one single case. Does anyone know of such a case?

Look up Mediasonic ones. Good reviews on newegg. I have a 4bay USB 2.0 version that's worked well.
