Looking for opinions on mobile ati cards

I just got a laptop. When I bought it the highest video card was the ati mobile 9200 radeon. They have just added the 9600 to the list of hardware, and it is the same price. Only problem is, I would have to send mine back. Wait for them to recieve and credit my card, repurchase the machine, wait for them to build it, and then wait for it to ship to me again. This will probably take 5-6 weeks at least. I notice the big difference is in the pipes on the two cards. But is it worth all the time and hassle?

The options for video cards are, I have the 9200 right now, the 9600 was just added after I ordered the machine and I couldn't change it :

64MB ATI Mobility Radeon(TM) 9200
128MB ATI Mobility Radeon(TM) 9600

Also, I can pay an extra couple of hundred to get the higher resolution. Right now the max on the laptop monitor is 1280x800. The higher resolution is 1920x1200.

Any views on this would be nice. I would like the increased memory and speed, but for standard applications and light gaming, is it really worth it?

Thanks,

Jeno

Depends on if you want to play DX9 games on your laptop. If not, then fuck it.:)

I hear that one, the main game I would probably end up with would be unreal tournament 2k4, or lineage, though I do have farcry and painkiller. Haven't tested any games, or ran benchmarks yet. I prefer to run them on my desktop with the 9800xt. Thanks for the input.

well if you do decide to send it back for the 9600, the 9600 can handle Far Cry and U2k very well, maybe not as well as a 9800XT but you won't be complaining for running Far Cry on a laptop

hehe figured that was coming, I get around 45 fps on my home machine at 1280x1024 if I remember right, 1600x1200 ran but not as smooth, and I found the text was too small to read. Then again, the laptop is not my gaming machine, but as long as I can play a few on it, shouldn't be that big of a problem. I just hate going without a good laptop after using this one for just a day. My older laptop is an amd 2000, but doesn't have built in wireless, and its getting a little dated. Couldn't run anything on that one.

That depends. Do you like slideshows?

My Ferrari 3000Lmi (Athlon XP 2500+ / ATI 9200 128Mb) runs Far Cry at 1024x768 surprisingly well, no freezes anywhere.

If the machine scores more than 5500 in 3DMark01, it'll play Far Cry.

ok good and bad news, I might be able to get the company to send me out the new one, b4 I send the current one in, since they have hardware on it and no drivers for one device. Looking at what to go with, basically the hp zx5000 or zd7000 maxed out. One concern is one is running nvidia go5700 and the other is ati 9600. I have used nvidia cards and the past, and compared to some of the equivalent ati cards, I preferred ati. Also, if there are any other companies out there with a decent gaming rig p4 3.0 ghz 800 fsb with a 5400 rpm and a decent screen, I would be open to suggestions. The dell inspirons look nice, but out of my price range... I need to stay under 2000$

WELLLLLLL the eMachines M6805/M6807/M6809 would fit the bill. It's not a P4, it's an Athlon 64 3000 or 3200 (depends on model), which does everything a P4 Northwood will (except hyper threading). A Prescott P4 will do SSE3 but nobody uses it yet. And it's well under $2000. :) Check the FAQ at the top of the forum.

I just ordered a Dell Inspiron 9100 Notebook for $1800 and with a $200 mail-in-rebate when it arrives.

Its got a

15.4 Widescreen WSXGA+ @ 1680 x 1050
P4 3.2 HT 800FSB (Northwood)
256MB Dual Channel at 400mhz (Dell overcharges on RAM so im getting my own)
60GB 7200rpm
128MB ATi M 9700

NOT BAD AT ALL FOR $1700 after getting a 512MB DIMM for alittle over $100.
