Looking for a Good Digital camera (rebel like)

You won't be able to auto-focus it at 300mm most of the time. You'll probably loose AF ability beginning at ~200-240mm. If it is very bright outside, AutoFocus may still work, but the Digital Rebel's AutoFocus sensors aren't designed to be operated at f-stops slower than f/5.6 (ie, not good when f-number is larger than f/5.6). But also the viewfinder will be fairly dim (being at f/6.3, and also a tiny 1.6x crop viewfinder) so even manually-focusing it may be difficult...

Good fast glass is worth the money (I'm saving/planning on a 70-200mm f/2.8 HSM from Sigma -- a lens that is supposedly not far off in performance to Canon's 70-200mm f/2.8 L, although supposedly built slightly cheaper). If you're able to get this very cheap without affecting budgets for better glass that you can save up for, search for pictures other people took with it, and then decide. Just remember that because someone can get a shot, doesn't mean it will work as well for you...

meh.. dosen't sound like that good of a lens then. Anywase, I sold the 86 944 Turbo in my sig and part of the deal was the guy buys me a Brand New Digital Rebel! So i'll have it this weekend, now if i sell my Xeon rig (shamless plug) i'll have about $550 to spend on some good glass!

At any rate, thanks again guys!

what about a 70/75-300 that is f4.0-5.6?? Thats a bit faster, AF would still work at 300 there right?

I know I should get a better, faster lens, but its not in the cards for a good 6 months. At which point I should be able to scrape 500-700 together if needbe for a better zoom

I was looking at this one
http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/controller/home?O=productlist&A=details&Q=&sku=230072&is=REG

or this one if I cant come up with quite that much money
http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/controller/home?O=productlist&A=details&Q=&sku=102854&is=GREY

And this is the lens I am planning to buy asap, for use in the meanwhile

nullvector seems to be getting pretty good images with his Tamron 70-300mm f/4-5.6 & 300D. He has a Disney Thread, and the Baseball Thread -> http://www.hardforum.com/showthread.php?t=872698 & http://www.hardforum.com/showthread.php?t=877214

Not sure how the other lenses hold up though. You could try checking the Reviews @ FredMiranda, although the reviews are lacking for the lenses you're looking for. http://www.fredmiranda.com/reviews/index.php

Good luck, and may you get a sharp copy of whatever lens you're seeking. :)

Today I recieved my first "real" lens.
Sigma 28-108 2.5-4.0
All I can say is
This thing is WORLDS better than the kit lens from what I can tell with my limited knowledge.
First off, the autofocus. Its LIGHTNING fast compared to the kit lens, and its ability to autofocus in lower light is MUCH better. In my stairwell where my kit lens never liked to lock focus, this lens has absolutely no issue.

The ZOOM. There is just no comparing the 55mm to the 105mm. Its SO much better. The 55mm seemed pretty useless to me, other than for limiting the view in the frame. If you needed to get in closer to something, you pretty much had to move your ass in closer. This sucks you right in.

Flexibility. Well, yeah, I lost a little bit of wide, but 28mm isnt bad, and the range of use for 28-105 is so much more usefull IMHO than the 18-55 was. I will however be holding onto the kit lens until I can afford a dedicated wide lens, as I like the 18mm setting for some shots.

To the original poster, I would whole heartedly recommend buying a body only instead of the kit, save the money from the kit and buy a decent general use lens. This one was 199.99, and is worlds better. Maybe not L quality, but much nicer than the kit lens.
However, if you can find the kit for less than $60 or so more than just the body, buy it and sell the kit lens on ebay, they seem to be getting around $75-90 right now.

Dave,
Thanks for the update! Got any comparable pics between the 18-55 and the 28-108 lens?

I'm not really spending my money per se, the camera is coming as part of the deal on my car. Its a brand new body with 18-55 from circuit city. I may still pick up the sigma lens as well.

I will go and take the same pic, at max wide and max zoom tomorrow. I have a beach, with a FAR out island, about 2 min from my house. I will post pics tomorrow evening :)

Lets just say I am SHOCKED at what a 105mm lens does on this camera.
What was the sony you had? Because I swear to you, this 105mm is NOT much less than the 6x was on my Fuji S7000. And supposedly that was = to 210mm

BTW, take the 18-55 off, take a pic of it, sell it on ebay. you will get at LEAST 70 for it. Roll that into a real lens, you wont regret it. Any hesitation I had about ditching the 18-55 is gone after today.

remember you have the 1.6x 35mm v APS sensor facotr.... 105mm=168mm. So no, it's not much less than 210mm.

Oh, no I know that.

Its just that it seems MORE powerfull thant he 210 was.

I attribute it to much cleaner pics, so at full res, things are clearer. Making it seem like it is out further, Kinda. Am I making any sense?

Dave,
I just picked up a Sigma 28-135mm f/3.8-5.6, the same one that was backordered on B and H. I got it from ebay, for very cheap. ($15, lol the guy bout it for his Nikon, and its for a canon) If it don't work, its not like i'm out a whole lot lol.

I should have my camera tomorrow, so this weekend i'll post some pics up.

Wait, you paid $15 for it!!??? How did I miss that
Thats the lens I was going to go with, but it was backordered. ALl in all, I am glad I went with the one I did, as its a faster lens, and I am not really missing the other 30mm. I will have that covered with the 70-300 anyway.

But for $15!!!   How the hell did I miss that

Dave, I'm not actually sure if its a f/3.8-5.6 or not but here is the auction link.

I'm pretty sure its the same lense, either way, i'm only out $15 or so ;)

I would say you have abotu a 1 in 5 chance of it fitting your camera as there are several different canon lens mounts or styles or whatever.
But at $15 bucks, if it doesnt fit, if you do 2 min of research and re-list it with a decent description, you will almost certainly get more for it than you paid, I am betting 3-4 times as much

This camera is like become a part of my body. I cant stand to be more than 10 feet away from it for more than 5 min. I watch tv sitting there holding it, zooming around my room, taking pics of random crap

OMG OMG must breath......

I just got my Canon 70-300 USM IS lens     This thing is BEUTIFUL. ANd the IS makes a HUGE difference, AF lock is damn near instant.
And for an f4/5.6 lens, it locks af amazingly well in dim lit areas (been playing with it a bit)

I'm still waiting for pics dave ;)

Is this the lense you got? http://store.47thstreetphoto.com/caef75fiiite1.html

This is the one i'm thinking about getting, but rather stick to a 135mm lense.http://store.47thstreetphoto.com/si70f4dlmasu.html

No, this is it :)
http://store.47thstreetphoto.com/caef75fisusm.html

ANd this is my regular day to day lens

WHile I understand your desire for a 135 lens, and I whole heartedly recommend buying a better day to day lens, You should get something with a better speed than your stock one, otherwise you are largely wasting your money. You already have 18-55 covered, why go 28-135 when you will eventually get a 70-300 anyway? If you go with a better/faster regular lens, you can still cover that distance but with better pics, especially in lower light, and less blur due to faster shutter speeds
I would go for THIS for your 135mm needs
http://store.47thstreetphoto.com/si24f2forsi.html
Its more $$$ But trust me, it will be money well spent. You will be better off with this lens than you will be spending the same money on 2 lesser quality lenses. I spent about $700 on my 2 lenses, and it was worth every penny. Still WAY less than what people try to say you need to spend, but a thousand times better than what the camera comes with.
I personally am REALLY kicking myself for not buying that 24-135 f2.8... I may end up selling this 28-105 to buy it...

EOS D30 . You can pick one up for under $500 and start off with the $50 50mm f1.8 lens. At 3 megapixels it has better image quality than anything you'll find in the 4-7mp range in point an shoots.

edit: Oops. Looks like I was a bit late. :p
