I just picked up a 32" 2560x1440 monitor with the intention for running it with my R9 290. Long story short card died and Im suffering along with a 5770 till I get a new card. Dont really want to spend alot. newest games I play are Witcher 3, Fallout 4, and alot of older stuff. Was looking at a Fury @ $340 but might be to long (12.8")for case. 390x are $280. 1070 are still hard to find and $$$. no AIB 480s yet. Should I just sit and save up and go for a 1080TI/490 when they come out?

If you have the patience to wait until the 1080ti or 490 is out, by then, you can get the 1080 at a decent price. Or, you can wait until the 1070 or 1080 are steady and not over priced and get one then. That isn't as long as a wait.

490 looks to be just a dual 480. 1080TI is rather extreme jump.

Since you play in 1440p, I would save up for a GTX1070.

I was just thinking about graphic in games improving and if I spend that kind of cash would be keeping it awhile. I normally stay in the $300-$350 range so upgrading isnt a pain on my wallet. Just looking at
options.

Bump your budget by ~$100 and get a 1070. It'll play Witcher 3 and Fallout 4 close to 60FPS at your resolution. So will a 980 Ti (With the edge going to the 1070 by 4 - 5%) since they dropped the prices on them recently.

I use a 1070 at 1440p 165Hz, I would not go any lower.. I had a 970 for a while to hold me over and it was...brutal. I also believe the 1080 is not a great value at the moment and the 1070 value won't fall too much. Hold onto it, sell when you get a Ti :D

jmnovak, If you want to stick in the $300-350 range it might be worth keeping your eyes open for a used or fire sale 980ti. When OC'd they are pretty much as fast as a OC'd 1070 and will perform quite well at 1440p. I run 1440p and had a 980ti, but sold it and just ran my R9 390 for a while waiting to see how the new Nvidia and AMD offerings stacked up. Just recently got a 1070, but overall it at 2100/9200 is about the same experience as my 980ti was at 1500/8000.

I was looking at the 980ti My only worry was that nVidia would stop supporting them in driver updates... Havent seen a 980ti for less than $400.... most 1070 sell out fast. Sucks market sucks right now:-(

NVIDIA won't stop supporting 980 Ti anytime soon, but if you can get the 1070 I would recommend going that route -- it's more power efficient and faster.

GTX 980ti - $420
GTX 1070- $440

Not much going on right now unless you catch a fire sale to get rid of stock.

The 980Ti can be found lower some places, didn't new egg fire sale the golden msi for $300? Now, if you've got poor airflow the choice is obvious..

@1440P the 1070 is the card to get right now. Grab a good aftermarket one when you can spot it for around $400 and overclock it nice and good. I don't think the 1080 is worth the price premium over the overclocked 1070

Also the aftermarket rx 480 is strong for 1080P (i'm upgrading to that from 770) But too weak to excel in 1440P

if there is a $300 980ti please be sure to link for all of us, I would grab that in a heart beat if it has a good cooler
