Long-rage wireless networking?

I want to write a paper regarding do-it-yourself long-range wireless networking. You know, the kind of thing where a guy takes an old primestar dish, hooks it up to his wireless card, and connects to an access point miles away?

The problem is, I'm having trouble finding any good sites. Especially sites that are EASY to understand.

Talk to your local amateur radio community, they should be able to help you in a lot of ways. They/we/I can operate in that band and a lot of people play around there, also they can help with proper RF terms and such.
