Well it would be possible to get surround, but you would need something that let you input through toslink/optical into your sound card, and a card capable of decoding it (not sure if Creative can do it in their software or not).
If you do connect it directly to the speakers then you won't get true surround (I think the Z-5300s have an upmixing feature, but it won't be true surround).
