Logitech Harmony 650 $38.99

I have been looking at these for a while, but it seems more complicated than just having four remotes. How long is the learning curve?

Not bad at all. And after smashing 4 Harmony One screens over 3 years, I figured it was best to get one of these instead.

Under the what's in the box tab

*Remote control
*USB cable
*Item condition: Manufacturer refurbished

In the whats in the box section it lists it as refurb.
edit: oops got beat to it.

I wish they would make another XBox remote. The old one they had was an awesome remote.

The current MS XBone Remote sucks to high heaven.

I've only used a harmony one, but it comes with software that makes it very easy to program the remote to do fairly complex tasks.

There are still things that I end up using the other remote for, but it's always things that I rarely do (otherwise I'd program it to do it ;))

This must be for the 1st gen 650. The description says it replaces up to 5 remotes. Newer models can handle 8. Still, $39 is a nice deal for an excellent remote.

Once you understand how to program the 650, you'll find it can replace just about any remote. I even taught mine to operate a big remote control room fan and a remote control wall clock. Pretty cool.

Another tip: I had a terrible time trying to get my desktop PC to sync with the 650. However, my laptop (MBP) syncs with it quickly/easily every time.

Yeah, I went through two of those and they were nice remotes. Smashed one under a game chair and kids ruined the other somehow with some nasty sugary drink.

This is really tempting. Just been using my phone (with built in IR blaster) for everything now, but would be much better for everyone else and guests to use.

I wish this had a gyro for the mouse cursor. My old Gyration remote is dead and it was so much more useful than a bunch of multimedia buttons.

Mine suffered death by Golden Retreiver. The term "soft mouth" does not apply to things made of plastic. Apparently.

After having many of these the last 10 years, I found it easier just to get a learning remote control. It is so much faster to make minor adjustments (and you will do this if you want to get everything perfect).

I've had one of these for a while. It's kind of hard on batteries and you'll spend more time scrolling through the menu on the screen to find the function you want than it would take you just get up and find the needed remote. It doesn't have direct access to your different devices so you constantly have to go back forth on the display to get the functions you want.

For you and me its easy to use and program. For my parents its more complicated than making a plane. I got one for my parents setup but they never use it because its complicated in their eyes. Now my parents are not tech savvy at all so YLMV

I love these remotes though!

I got my (completely tech illiterate as you'd imagine) grandma in-law to use my old Harmony pretty easily after I just showed her the "help" button. If something doesn't turn on or work properly, all you have to do is hit that Help button and it will resend the command and/or ask you what did or didn't work properly to fix it. It always got her working good on it at least.

My parents are in their mid 60s now. I had bought the Harmony 890 almost 10 years ago for them (mainly because I got it dirt cheap). Just teaching them how to use that particular remote was a challenge - nevermind the programming aspect of it. I bought this (650) remote about 3 years ago (it was also on sale at the time) with intention to obsolete and replace the 890. From my personal experience, the 650 is waaay less complicated to program and use than the 890.

End result was that my parents got so used to the 890 that it didn't matter that the "new" remote was easier to use. They were never comfortable with it. The 650 is built better too. I don't have to worry about its battery bubbling out.

Moral of the story is that old people, above all else, don't like change.

Also, I'm in for two. It's an older model, for sure, but that's silly dirt cheap for what it can do.

Belongs in Discussion now, but I just got mine today. Bubble pack with just the remote and a cable.

For some reason I thought it had a rechargeable battery but it's just AAs (not included)...oh well.

Pushing one button is complicated?

The 700 is the rechargeable version of the 650. I tossed my 700 because it took an insanely long time to recharge. So much easier to pop in a couple of fresh batteries when my 650 needs them.

Ah...guess I don't mind so much then. ;)
