Live From Apple's iPhone 5 Event

Bigger screen, faster processor, better camera. LTE...

OMG Apple is like sooo copying everyone else! Where's the Apple corer? Switchblade toothpick? Corkscrew?

I thought you apple people claimed any screen bigger than 3.5" was too big? And LTE 4G was a waste? The camera is unseen so far but I doubt it's any better than other high end priced phones. Faster cpu.... Huh? We don't know that. All copied from android phones regardless, yes. Somehow you people don't know they existed?

Cool. Do me 1 favor? Could you please tell me where I ever said architecture A couldn't just run faster? Just one place please. I've argued about CPU load, and pipelInes, and your general understanding of design... but I don't remember arguing that.

Can you do everyone else a favor and just shut the fuck up? You managed to completely derail a thread about an iPhone launch because you couldn't stop jerking yourself off about one tiny bit of hardware in the whole damn thing.

Damn near every reply of yours is full of projection because you cannot separate your own ignorance apart from what we're trying to get across to you. We dumb down our statements for your benefit and you just waste even more time acting like you were just misunderstood all along when YOU were the one saying asinine things like...

So a Cortex A15, with a wider frontend and much better Out of Order pipeline support is going to show NO speed gain at sub 100% load with a A9? This is what your saying?

No. NONE OF US EVER SAID THAT... so stop asking if that is what we were saying because you are the ONLY PERSON TO IMPLY SUCH.

Not an iPhone owner so take these comments as you will.

The connection type makes sense the you guys are all looking at this connection from a experienced technical minded point of view.

I've been doing Technical support for multitudes of companies and I've had customers plug USB cables into Ethernet ports, Plug them in backwards and force them into their computers. So supporting this product from a technical stand point I'll actually enjoy being able to tell someone plug it in either way.

Mapping software people saying it looks like google maps, every mapping software looks the same the difference is how they provide directions and additional options as well.

I'm neither a Droid, Windows Mobile or iOS fan, I have a Windows Phone now running Android and it will stay that way, I see good changes with the new iPhone but to me all smart phones are just overpriced.

I don't like Apple. iPhone is just a ho-hum device with a ho-hum UI. :)

The new iPhone, while it isn't a huge difference when it comes to aesthetics or UI, it has a few notable changes behind the most visible. Speed, resolution, screen size. Do these make it worthwhile to go from 4s to 5? I don't know. I just got a 4s for work. It works great for what I do. I'm sure if I did gaming or anything, I'd go for it. If I were in the market for a new phone, the iPhone 5 would be up there. It's very competitive. I can run any iPhone app on the 4s. Nothing is magically going to run any faster or any better on the 5. These aren't like PC's where you can see an immediate improvement with an upgrade.

Definite upgrade from the 4s in hardware specs. But, I can't think of any software that would challenge the 4s, much less the 5. But, I'm not an iPhone/iOS app specialist. There very well may be some games that barely run on the 4s that could use the extra horsepower (or some games incoming). I see some people upgrading from the 4s to the 5. But, if you're running a 4 or 3, then it'd be a much larger upgrade, and noticeable. To put it in CPU terms: going from a SB 2600k to an Ivy Bridge may not be a huge improvement. But, go from a Core2Duo (still not slow, but a while back) and it's a much larger difference under the hood and noticeable from a end user standpoint.

Hands on video from anandtech looks really nice. My biggest complaint on the 4/4s was how faded the display looked. Well that and it was 3.5". I really want to these this phone in person and line it up next to my SGS2. Not sure on screen real estate difference between 4.3 and 4, and how the "vibrancy" of the new lcd compares to the oled.

Definately not interested in anything larger than my s2, and pentile is just a complete turn off for me. Probably would get used to it, but I compared the S2 and S3 and didn't care for the S3 at all.

Sounds like they need to invest more time into a better battery...

I said "cool Cortex A15"
You then tried to say a quad core A9 would give same performance, i corrected you.

Then Goldentiger tried to say that if a CPU is below 100% load its not slower than another.
I corrected that.

Then you posted some HILARIOUS and completely offtopic pictures that contributed nothing (as none of your posts have).

Then you got angry and accused me of saying something I didnt.
Then you got angry again.

And because I dont want this post to be completely offtopic:

Apple is having dedicated CDMA and GSA devices again, no global phone. That does suck.

Brief iPhone 5 A6 chipset specs:

1.2GHZ Dual Core (slight upgrade over the 4S)
1GB RAM

Unsure with graphics yet, sorry for posting this again if it's been posted. But 1.2GHZ Dualie with 1GB RAM is so last year. It's time for Apple to play catch up with the latest technology trends.

Where did you find the 1.2ghz? I havent seen it reported yet, i was expecting 1ghz.

Yep. Even the S3 has twice the Ram, and if you're lucky enough to be outside the US... twice the cores with a higher clock rate. Efficiency gains per clock with a newer Cortex architecture won't matter much unless the CPU is being fully loaded. 20% faster/more efficient won't matter much when you max clock is also 20% lower. Then you have IO speeds, nand speeds, overhead, cache, ram, the lack of true multitasking in iOS, GPU variations, etc... It's so idiotic to place so much importance on one part when the CPU is often not even the bottleneck in the majority of the cases. (Temple Run plays no differently on my phone when I'm clocked at 800Mhz versus 1.2Ghz)

So yeah. This is a very mediocre release even by Apple standards... and this is on top of their usual failings. No 720 screen, no expandable user storage, no user serviceable battery, no standardized ports (aside from their own), specs that are still fairly average, same boring UI... Nothing game changing here except maybe the ambidextrous (and proprietary) plug. Even then... I'd prefer cheap and standardized over that since MicroUSB cables are $2 each and it allows me to recycle all of my old chargers to always have one nearby without needing to unplug another.

They dropped the ball again and are slipping further behind the curve with every refresh. More pixels does not an industry strategy make.

Yeh I was hoping that at least the iPhone 5 will have some epic features on release like when the first iPhone came out. Something like 2GB RAM or 1.5 minimum, a quad core custom A6 or A5X chipset that the iPad 3 has and a slightly bigger screen. So far it's been a disappointment, was thinking of buying one for playing around, software app developtment etc, but starting from $699 for a 16GB model, 4 inch screen (with a decent ppi density screen), it's a big disappointment. One thing would be cool if Apple released a slim line based iPhone with a slide out keyboard, good old Motorola Cliq day's :p

Ohh and they need to get rid of this bullshit proprietary connector they have and start using micro usb as a standard.

+1

I'm so sick of my Apple In-laws asking if I have a charger for their phone when they come...

ME: "I have USB, Regular, Mini, and Micro..."
THEM: "Why don't you just get an iphone?"
ME: "Cause I like my Android, and hate dealing with iTunes"
THEM: "Blah..."

Ohh and they need to get rid of this bullshit proprietary connector they have and start using micro usb as a standard.

and then allow me to drag and drop songs onto the device instead of using itunes... yeah neither will ever happen

Meh. It's improved, but I would rather buy an SIII. There so much better Android phones out there in my opinion.

I'm using a custom ROM'd Atrix 2, shits all over the 4S, not surprised if it will be all over the iPhone 5.

Worse specifications than the competition? It's hilarious when the GSIII (a 2012 phone) has an Adreno 225 gpu chip in it for North America. You guys can keep drinking the Samsung Kool-Aid. But their GPU has been owning Android for a while now.

I guess I'll have to keep reminding so-called "enthusiasts" on this site that the GSIII (NA) has a subpar GPU, and Apple's GPU still trumps it, badly.

Because it needs to be said again..."ITS JUST A FUCKING PHONE"..

Serious question here...Just how damn powerful does a CELLPHONE need to be to switch between screens, load tiny ass webpages, play Angry Birds or Temple Run and type up an email or a text message?

Put your dicks back in your pants until a phone can do ALL this at the same fucking time, with a split screen tiled view of each function:
1) Make a phone call
2) Navigate via GPS and Google Maps
3) Send a MMS via text
4) Play my mp3`s and Netflix
5) Send an Excel spreadsheet or PowerPoint presentation

Until then, its just a fucking phone that happens to do some other cool shit...

I will take my Moto Razr over an iPhone any day...or my Droid X. Until an iDevice/phone has SD storage, removable battery, microUSB data/charging and no iTunes, I will not have one of those devices...

i bet everyone knows what the iphone SIX will look like already.

yep. the same.

To be honest, the 6 should be a new design. If you look, the 1, 3g/3gs all looked the same(or at least very similar) and now the 4/4s and 5 all look the same, so the next one should be different. I guess it all depends on how many they sell though.

Because a phone has to change shapes to be "good". Maybe if they made a phone in the shape of their logo you would flock over to buy them!

Actually, my thoughts are like this: they kept with the numbering moniker because they don't believe this is worthy of the rebrand of "New iPhone", and this could very well be the last of the numbered iPhone era.

I'm thinking this is their stop gap phone before they make the plunge to a total redesign. Because let's face it, this is not a "radical redesign" that insiders were spewing.

I'll be honest, the iPhone looks really nice. Although I think if they make a let's say 4.3" or so screen they may have to change the shape a little bit. I will give this to Apple, they really know how to design shapes that look cool.

Yes, yes they do. But iOS was definitely unimpressive.. it's like they ran out of steam and didn't know what to do. They can only use "Absolutely amazing, absolutely gorgeous, the best....," etc for so long. They need to give us a reason to believe that. When the iPhone 4 came out, hell yeah it was an amazing piece of hardware.

When did any of that get brought in? Look at my original comment - I said Apple got Cortex A15's out before others, and they beat the projected timelines the industry had to do. I said that is impressive, and they did pull that off. Everything else here is just android people attacking the fact Apple did something well.

While seeing Apple get the A15 out before anybody else it is indeed impressive it is not that big of a deal and I'd say that about any phone. Especially since unless the phones are pegged at 100% it really doesn't matter.

My Galaxy Nexus rarely hits 1.2GHz on it's dated OMAP processor (more or less same CPU in the new Kindle Fire HD). I flashed CM10 M1 yesterday (uptime is about 29 hours) and you get 4 CPU steppings. 350, 700, 920, 1200. I've used the phone quite a bit and I've only spent 12 minutes at 1200 and 11 minutes at 920. With that type of ramping having A9 or A15 won't matter. One will just ramp up higher than the other and do the same thing in the same amount of time.

The one thing I do wish Android OEM's would do is beef up their GPU's like Apple does. Apple constantly smokes Android devices with their GPU's and I'm sure iPhone 5 will be no different. iPad 2 is still smoking Tegra 3 based tablets when it comes to the GPU. The Android OEM's are going way too cheap when it comes to the GPU. While the SGS3 is an amazing phone it's criminal that it's only an Adreno 225. SGS3 should have had nothing less then the Adreno 320.
