Ok...I'm officially confused: I was looking at the Lite-On SOHW-812S when I noticed the Lite-On 812S - what's the difference? Also, I thought these WERE combo drives, but they were listed as DVD writers - separate from the combos...what is the difference? Please help!

SOHW = Sony Optical Hardware or something.. Sony has a strategic agreement with Lite-On, so they supply pick-up head units and drive-lasers to Lite-On.The SOHW 812S and the Lite-On 812S are the same, no worries on that count.

A combo drive normally refers to a drive that can read DVDs and write to CDR/RW drives. A DVD writer will be advertised as such, and in addition to the capabilities of the combo drive, will also write to DVDR/RW discs, making it more expensive in the process.
