Linux Kernel's New Code of Conduct Results in F-Word Being Replaced with "Hugs"

I find using the word hug offensive to people who have been traumatised by being hugger mugged or do not like being hugged :troll:
 
It's the same like with fuck and frack. Meaning stays the same, only some fucktards think it's acceptable to say hug instead of fuck.
 
I agree with some of the posts here. I posted this elsewhere, but worth repeating.

Why are we damaging the word "hugs"? All this does is create a new "safe" phrase "HUGS YOU!!" that can be used and then we all know what it really means.

Why not pick a word that is already damaged, like "trump"... or better, in Linux circles, "Reiser"?

Regatdless of what Freud would or wouldn't think, the bottom line is that it's entirely unnecessary - it's called being an adult. While an adult shouldn't let some language ruin their day, an adult should also be able to communicate witbout such language.

Considering we're talking about 33 lines of comments within 3.3 million....I'd say people are 'acting like adults' when it comes to language.
Seems to me that some people are creating a problem where one doesn't really exist.

There are two ways to look at this. First is that this is yet another step to restrict the conduct certain people consider offensive; people with a history of appearing overly sensitive and continually moving the bar of acceptability in the eyes of many. Thus, it justifies exactly what those who were worried about the Linux code of conduct's recent change and seem to prove concern was warranted.

The other side however, is a behavior taken on its own that is well in line with professional, workplace levels of discourse. While there are certainly exceptions, it is rather common not to curse in professional correspondence, bug reports, or other quasi-official documents. Yes, I am sure that there will be some exceptions and someone will claim that their entire issues tracker is full of "Damn thing kept causing a fucking segfault and fucked my whole PC" or whathaveyou, but on average that kind of thing is not put down in official office memos, much less anything displayed in public related to the company. Hell, there are plenty of forums, chat channels, games etc.. . that perform a very similar replacement when it comes to language deemed inappropriate. So in this regard, it need not NECESSARILY be worth freaking out about. If anything, there is certainly a discussion to be had about Linux kernel development as "serious business, conducted with the gravitas and expectations of such" vs as "A bunch of hackers working on open source software voluntarily, in a casual environment and format".

The thing to watch from this point is to see if any changes are made in the future. If those are insisted upon that go beyond general professionalism, then it will confirm many of the stated fears. Just something to think about.

Did I say it was necessary? Nope. I said you should be an adult enough to pass right over it without being all butt hurt about it.

Seriously though, people should spent more time worrying about the quality of the code they are submitting and less worrying about the specific wording used in other peoples' comments.

I'm to the point in this thread where I'm not sure if you are really talking about hugs or fucks with all the f-bomb replacements going on in this thread LOL. But either way, both would be immediate HR trips lol.
 
This is how it starts by changing language small changes here and there almost trivial most people shrug it off.

George Carlin (RIP) had it figured out a while ago. In the grand scheme of things, the Linux kernel thing seems pretty minor, but it shows the direction we're leaning as a society more and more.
