Hey, I have a Linksys SpeedBooster 802.11g Wireless Broadband Router (Mixed Mode) and my problem is with File Downloads. No matter the file size, (exception is for files 1MB and less) My ROUTER "denys" the download. What I mean by this, is if the file size exceeds 1MB the router will allow the download to reach some random download point (0KB-1MB) at which point it will lock-up/stick/stop downloading. The transfer speed will drop to 12.5KB a second (From about 400KB/Sec) and never do anything.

The MINUTE I plug my LAN cable straight into the Cable Hub the downloads are lightning fast and I able to download Any file I want regardless of file size.

What is going on here? I never had this problem with my old Linksys Router. This wireless one is being all fishy. Someone help me out :(

Also I need the Wireless Hub to work because I have a laptop and another computer which have since been set up around the house and have access to the net via the wireless.

Speedbooster technologies and the like is NOT certified by the wireless administration, so their are NO quality standards for speed enchanced routers. One router will work perfectly fine, the next won't work at all. This has been an on going problem since basically now only 2 major chip manufacturers make wireless router chipsets. As its a cat and mouse game back and forth, both companies are trying new stuff to get ahead of the competition like trying new and unproven speed technologies

Unfortuantly however, the consumer is the guinea pig and the end result is a variable of quality of routers in the market. My suggestion is to urn off the speedbooster in your router and its a good chance it will function normally. If not, flash firmware to the newest version. If still nothing, return the router as its likely defective.

Thanks, well, I didn't buy it because I am a guinea pig, I got it as a Present for Christmas. It does its job well, except for downloads.

I assume I would disable SpeedBooster by connecting to 198.162.1.1 correct? And when I do, I will not lose any performance? I would hope not...

No, you type in 192.168.1.1 to enter the menu interface of the Linksys. After logging in with the default password *unless you changed it* Look in the wireless settings to disable speedbooster.

You will NOT see any performance hits for regular ussage as the .11g standard calls for around 54mpbs or around 675 kiloBYTES per second transfer rate. However, you will NEVER seen this maximum in any wireless enviroment due to a huge number of reasons. Also keep in mind that your broadband connection will never allow to reach this maximum as even a 10mbs cable connection isn't even HALF of .11g's highest rate.

In short, only if you were to able get Speedbooster to run correctly and transfer LARGE files over the LAN, not the WAN would you see a performance difference between speedbooster and non speedbooster data rates. As it is and others will back me up on this, speedbooster technology RARELY to NEVER allows you to hit even close to 108mpbs. Essentially, the technology is more a marketing hype then anything else. As such you will see absolutely no hit in performance with it being disabled.

Yep a marketing Hype that ruins other people connections and polutes the air waves.

Also
3Mb = 384KB
10Mb = 1.25MB
54Mb = 6.75MB
108Mb = 13.5MB

Your internet conection is probably around 3Mb or so for standard cable. Unless you are transfering VERY large files between computers you should be fine with a standard 802.11G connection.

The speed booster is a problem for most people. It uses more than one channel. There are 11 channels available to the 802.11B/G standard, don't hog them all :p

Blah, thought it worked for a minute. Last night I did a ping test through the router and was getting Really high Pings, when it went straight to the cable box it was normal. This morning, I tried it again in the router and the ping times were perfect, Mixed Mode and G-Only. However, in both modes I still can't download anything.

I am using SuSE 9.2 DVD/Mini Installation ISO's as a test. Both "lock-up" at 200-300KB. Straight in the Cable Box and you can watch those bad boys download.

Still confused...is it possible the router is just bad?

Oh yeah, Using 6 Channels btw. Win XP SP2 if that helps. And specs are in sig. Cable provider is Comcast.

I setup a wireless network for my dad useing Comcast. This might sound strange, but I had to use MAC cloneing to get it to work. It would randomly disconnect him, and drop the I.P. Are you useing WEP/WAP or MAC filtering?

Would you believe None? :D
Everytime I turn on WEP none of the other computers can connect for some reason. I think the only way I am going to get WEP to work is to enter in the MAC Addresses for the comps so it knows them. I dunno...I guess its not a big deal to just change the plug everyonce in a while... :(

You seriously should consider useing some kind of security. What happens when someone drives by looking for an opne network. Finds your and downloads child porn on your connection. The Feds come and take your stuff. They realize it was someone else, but only after they discover your 5000 MP3's :D Atleast use MAC filtering.

Call Linksys's customer support and see if they have anything to offer. All I can say is wireless connections suck, slow, buggy.........

Yeah, I've trying to figure out how to fix the WEP, which I will put up. Blargh. Stupid downloads.

I can help if you give me more info. How many PC's are wireless, what brand of cards they are useing and if you are useing the software that came with them, or Windows XP's wireless software.

Cool, thanks for being so helpful :D

Router: Linksys Wireless Router G with Speedbooster. Model WRT54GS. This computer (sig) uses Nvidia's Built in Ethernet. My Dad's Dell Laptop uses the Dell Wireless add-on thing...and the computer upstairs uses Linksys Wireless-G PCI Adapter. Model WMP54G. I am using the Drivers that came with the CD, which was labeld "Run CD before connecting cables" :)
