Lightweight / Ultrathin 27" Monitors?

Hi everyone. I'm looking into thin or lightweight 27" monitors with 1440p resolutions and so far all I've found is the Dell S2719DM and the Acer XG270HU (There's also the Asus MX27UC but it's thicker than the Dell and heavier than the Acer). The Dell looks perfect except the weight on the website is listed as 17 lbs, while the Acer is thicker but only weighs about 8 lbs. Right now I'm leaning towards getting the Acer, but it seems like there should be something more barebones out there for less than $350 since I'm not tied to 144hz refresh rates, gsync or anything like that.

Background: I'm currently traveling on business for 3 week stretches by car and I'd like to have something bigger than my 15" laptop to play games on while stuck at the hotel. I already have a 27" 1440p monitor at home, but it's an old Korean Shimian brand IPS panel and I haven't had any luck converting a display port output to the monitor's DVI input. I'm currently using an alienware laptop with a gtx1060 gpu.

Hi, i had one of those Korean dispalys, and looked for an adaptor, found this post (original post) that recommends this adaptor (link), i checked the review pictures and there is proof that it works, but never decided to order the cables, son do not have any personal experience.

I have an Asus pg278q, which, given the size is really lightweight. If you dont care about colors, i would look for a cheap TN panel cause normaly they weight little cause cheap plastic and screen. I think this panel (link) is interesting and cost less than your initial budget. hope to be helpful.

Yeah, I looked that up and bought that adapter and no luck still. Thanks for the links though. I was thinking a cheap TN panel would be best.

Best travel monitor I've seen is the HP L2201X. Been discontinued for years but if you are ok with a smaller monitor (22in 1080p) it is extremely portable and still offer good image quality. I have one and its held up quite well even compared to the newest IPS panels. Can find some for cheap on Ebay.

At that price the only 1440/1600p displays it's going to be able to drive at 60hz are ones that can take a single DVI link overclocked to HDMI 1.4 speeds (this would be a display whose controller chip supported HDMI 1.4 but whose OEM chose not to add an HDMI port). If you want to try and find something that will work with the vast majority of DVI only monitors that don't support that non-standard mode you'll need to look for an active adapter. They run $70-100ish and have a USB plug on the PC side for additional power. They also have a reputation for being flakey/finicky about where/when they'll work. If you insist on going down this route, I'd strongly advise buying from a seller with a no questions asked return policy. For my part, I've accepted that when DVI ports finally go away on GPUs, it'll be time to retire my NEC 3090 and replace it with a cheap 32" 4k monitor. (eg the $400ish one from Monoprice.)

I have about 10 of the bizlink branded versions of them and have had no issues with the oldest one dating back to 2009 for an original eyefinity setup with a radeon 5870. If you actually need one watch ebay as I snagged most of mine for 25 bucks when a business is clearing them out. IF you buy new expect to pay 100 bucks per adapter. I personally use the achieva shimian 27" 1440p monitors with these adapters.

I do not think 27" and lightweight or compact belong in the same sentence, you just commit to that size and deal with it.

I've had good luck with Dell U2713HM but not sure it's what you want. Pay attention to the pixel density, QHD works well with 27" and results in the PPI of 109, that is what makes it look so good. An equivalent 20" that's full HD (1920x1080) with the same PPI would have to be 20". A 24" that's HD is a bit grainy, with the PPI closer to 91.

Maybe you can consider a 4K 27", one of these Dells. I've had one and they are very lightweight. And run it at 2.5K, not 4K if your machine cannot support it.
