Why in the world would anyone want a Windows 10 computer built into the front of a refrigerator? Do what normal people do and have a tablet on the counter so that way when your wife is looking up recipes and stuff while she cooks, I can still reach in the fridge and get a damn beer. ;)

Just what we all needed: our fridge spying on us.

"Used two eggs for breakfast yesterday, only one egg today...that's clasifiable as suspicious behavior..."

Windows 10 seems like overkill for a refrigerator OS. There are several lightweight embedded OSs that are perfectly suitable for something like that.

Next they'll be installing Windows 10 in your toilet so Cortona can tell you how to properly wipe and search for the most popular toilet paper.

Considering there other options are Android which never gets updated after 2 years and Apple which would mark up the fridge 2x this isn't half bad. Go ahead and hack your favorite operating system onboard!

From the headline, I was initially thinking they were using the striped down IoT version of Win 10, not the full bloated thing. IoT version I can easily see being tied into your home computer system, with it doing all the heavy lifting, and the IoT just being essentially a dumb terminal.

With the lifetime of refrigerators far outlasting the typical computer, I hope they have some sort of long term upgrade or maintenance support plan for the computer part.

Smartfridges are a good idea, but not like this. It would be cool if it had a spot for your milk, and eggs, and so you could remotely check your fridge on your smartphone to estimate how many eggs or milk or cheese or whatever you have left based on simple scale measures and a wifi connection.

It would also be useful to have a mic that kicks on when you open the fridge for say 5 mins, so you can perhaps grab an orange juice, realize its empty and say "Fridge, add Orange Juice and Bacon to list".

It would also be smart to have a touchscreen enabled LCD on the front that is mostly blank, and just shows maybe traffic, the current time and date, and weather, along with a blank area to use as a whiteboard so you can leave a note for the spouse or kids by writing with your finger, "Honey, I told you to buy milk and you didn't, I want a divorce." Stuff like that.

Maybe the headline is better as "LG put a fridge on a Windows 10 tablet!"

I can't believe no one has thought about the amazing overclock potential with the thing being *in a fridge*.

But no, what'll actually happen is a forced update will brick your fridge overnight.

It might be really useful but, I am not really sure how. Then again, I am not into the IoT type stuff anyways and I do not like buying expensive appliances, just something that lasts a while.

I got a fridge that keeps things cold, it doesn't keep records.

I kinda like it that way.

That's pretty much what samsung's smart fridge initiative is supposed to do, whiteboard, and internal camera to figure out what was consumed and not returned to the shelf. Their old one had a web browser which is great for recipes, but it was unbelievably slow to render modern websites for a $5k fridge. This LG one even with a cherry trail should be able to run plex, and browse amazon so I'd gladly get one if I was in the market for one. It would be cheaper than remodeling our kitchen to make space for a tablet where heat/water isn't a problem. No way i could squeeze in a ipad, but this gets me a sizable display in an otherwise wasted surface. I can totally see an Amazon click applet for a fridge like this.

To me the perfect fridge is what they have at takeaway shops, they have glass doors so you can see what the hell is in there without having to open the fucking thing. Why the hell has no one made this for home? It would be a 100% added bonus value. Or if they must get technical, how about an inside camera and an outside screen on the door showing what is inside? This would remove any perceived losses of cold through the glass, and keep efficiency up as again, you don't need to open the damn door to see what is in there.

It's so simple, hello manufacturers, is anyone thinking, or are you all just wanking over perceived 1950's imagining of the future so much you don't see the damn obvious?

Glass industrial fridges aren't very power efficient, since they are opened frequently, they're optimized for quick cooling from frequent access, so losses through the door are less of a factor. these LG fridges are CEE class 2 and 3 and cost a lot less to operate. I saw a samsung fridge with a polycarbonate inner door so you could open the front and see the contents and not leak too much heat in. That's a nice compromise.

Gives a whole new meaning to the question "Is your refrigerator running?"

I'd hate have my food go bad after a BSOD, or have support tell me to reboot my refrigerator as the "fix"
So, buy a $2000 fridge and glue an tablet to the front. A lot cheaper that way.

It would be illegal to sell in this country because they wouldn't be able to meet the energy efficiency required by the government.

I can see it now. You'll pull up a recipie, set a timer on the fridge, and then the whole thing will randomly freeze or reboot for updates while you're working.

It never ceases to amaze me how much hate there is for Windows 10. If you hate it so much, how come you use it enough to bitch about it constantly? There are plenty of other OS's out there you should be using. If my shoes hurt my feet, I don't bitch about the shoes, I get different shoes.

Yeah, if this had Android on it, they would most likely be praising it up for being a great Google innovation. Otherwise, it does not surprise me that folks hate on stuff around here, it is the in thing to do. Take a look at the Steam Survey thread and it will not take long to figure out where the hate for that is coming from. :D
