LG DVD Burner not seen in WinXP; in Vista it says USB Mass Storage. Ideas?

LG DVD Burner not seen in WinXP; in Vista it says USB Mass Storage error.

Any ideas what it could be? It's connected via a USB cable. It was working fine a few weeks ago and now it's not recognized by XP and Vista states there's an error installing the driver. It sees it as a USB mass storage device.

Is the drive broken?

It's an internal DVD drive, but I use it as an external one connected via a IDE->USB connector. It's the LG GDR-8164B

can you actually hook it up internally to the IDE Controller on the board? that should be enough to tell you if it's really the drive or not.
