LG 45″ OLED Ultrawide 5120 x 2160@165Hz 45GX990A and 45GX950A

I'm loving this monitor. I had the 1440p model for a week or so, I couldn't handle the PPI for work, games were fine as mentioned. But man, for reading/writing/code it was a bit much. I have it set to 3800x1600 scale wise on OSX, and may crank it a bit more once I get everything dialed.

I’ll have to try the latest hotfix driver before I totally give up on it I guess.

TFTC's review mentions the 15% brightness fall off on the right side (same thing I observed even after turning off CPC from the service menu), that also leads to a visible cooler temperature on the edge. Nitpicking? Sure but when your screen is priced north of 1500, it needs to be perfect since cheaper QDOLED options exist, even if not in the exact same format.

I just tried the latest hotfix driver, and it looks like DP 2.1 works now with 10-bit color (including HDR). I tested it only briefly, but it seems OK. Still running only at 40Gbs (not 54), so not sure it's actually better than HDMI 2.1 because I don't know what they're doing in that mode (it could be up to 48Gbs). My guess is they're running both at 40Gbs, but I don't know.

What version is the hotfix?

How do you see the DP speed?

Also confirmed, 576.26 works for me at 5k2k/10bit/165hz over DP (not sure of the speed)

Still a no go for me with the hotfix driver. Still can’t run over DP 1.4 and still can’t use my motherboards onboard sound with this monitor. Either I’m going to reinstall Windows 11 or just take the monitor back. I have until 5/9.

Crazy, I'm on an MSI 5090 as well. What are you setting it to, 5k2k @ 165hz @ 10-bit color?

I can’t get DP 2.1 to work at all. Just a black screen. DP 1.4 works okay but again if I try switching to my onboard sound it will cause the browser to crash as well.
Can you try disabling the monitor sound output from device manager or the sound options in windows? So Windows won't even try to use it.

Good idea. I’ll try that later when I get home. I did try disabling it in sound manager, but no luck. Thanks!

Hmmm... It doesn't appear to handle the Windows monitor turn off properly in DP 2.1 with the 576.26 drivers. It doesn't wake up until I press the button on the back of the monitor. I tried it two times with the same behavior.

That sounds familiar, except for me it's an older LG 27GN950. Never had a problem with DP until I switched to USB4-to-DP and it has the same problems turning off and on, and this is with Radeon drivers.

I don't know what it has to do with your issue, but just saying it might be a more common problem than people are aware.

The wake-up works ok when using HDMI 2.1 or DP 1.4, so something is messed up specifically when using DP 2.1. I may go back yet again to HDMI 2.1 on this monitor. Pretty annoying - I changed back and forth multiple times already. Maybe I should keep the monitor connected with both HDMI and DP (to keep testing new driver releases), but not sure if that will cause issues.

Well I tried that and still nothing. It's beyond frustrating.
So what I have done as a work around is plug my speakers into the headphone jack and have the monitor at 100% volume and just control the speaker volume as normal. It feels a little more "normal" now, but it's still not right. I really don't understand how just switching monitors can cause so many issues. Still on the fence about returning.

You can use GPU-Z to see the speed. It's in the Monitor section of the Advanced tab.

One thing I still need to test is if the monitor wakes up ok from sleep in DP 2.1.
Well mine is showing 10GBPS or 8.1GBPS with 10 or 12-bit color at 5120x2160 @ 165hz
Is that even possible?? Or is it 8.1/10gb per lane and 4 lanes = 40gb

I am getting some odd flickering now.. monitor will turn off and on here and there. Not sure why all of a sudden, it was working fine for a while.

Is there any benefit from using DP over HDMI in this case? if they are both 54gb and 48gb then not much of a difference.

I don't think there's a benefit to using DP 2.1 instead of HDMI 2.1 on this monitor. DP 2.1 is running 40Gbs on this monitor, and likely HDMI 2.1 is the same. I'm switching back to HDMI 2.1 because of the wake-up problem. DP 2.1 support is still buggy. I don't know if it's the drivers, the GPU, or the monitor.

I'm going to switch cables as well and see if it helps. This feels like a cable issue with the inconsistency in how it happens.

DP just seems to be more finnicky than HDMI in my experience. Currently running a Samsung S95F at 4K 165Hz which requires DSC on HDMI 2.1 and I've had less issues compared to my 4K 240Hz monitor using DP 1.4. Perhaps if no DSC was being used at all on an 80Gbps connection then maybe DP would be better.

New driver

576.28

... couple of fixes related to issues noted here

Fixed General Bugs

  • [RTX 50 series] Momentary display flicker occurs when running in DisplayPort2.1 mode with a high refresh rate [5009200]
  • [RTX 50 series] [LG 27GX790A/45GX950A/32GX870A/40WT95UF/27G850A]: Display blank screens when running in DisplayPort 2.1 mode with HDR [5080789]
Will try it tonight.

Well I can use DP 2.1 with full capabilities along with 12bpc with the new drivers, but my sound is still the way it has been.

Edit: Sound no longer works in games. I know this is an Nvidia issue, and it's getting real old real quick.

Dang dude, can you disable it in Device manager?

I have done that and still nothing. I did perform another clean install with the newest drivers through the Nvidia app this morning, and everything works now. Makes me think Nvidia is really pushing this whole app thing..lol.

Picked one of these displays up a couple days ago from the local BestBuy. Display is absolutely gorgeous. Zero issues using HDMI on my RTX 4090. I've been pleasently surprised by the performance too. Cyberpunk maxed out (no path tracing) with DLSS4 Quality = 100fps.

Well, switched to HDMI, everything back to working perfectly. I'll wait for NV to fix their crap. No issues with DP 1.4 from my laptop -> monitor at full res 100hz or 165.

How’s the brightness on this? I’m tempted to try one out but I’m 90% certain it’s going to look dull and lifeless next to the TV. I think MistaSparkul has the right idea going with that 55” S95F. Price difference on the two isn’t big either.
