Just got an ultraslim U300 for my wife, there is no optical drive in the machine and the One Key Recovery Program that comes installed will not burn an ISO to an external USB drive.

Will buying an external burner work, or is there an easier workaround?

I know there's a partition on the drive for recovery, but I want an external backup of the OS in case the drive ever fails. I've had to resort to recovery quite a few times on the wife's and kids machines in the past.

Not really sure what your trying to do. If you’re trying to make a Windows OS disk to re-install a fresh copy, not possible. Netbook or laptops with no burning drive which have preload Windows 7 cannot create an install image of the OS. You need a legit copy of Windows to create and ISO image, long process.

Now if you’re trying making a back up image of the system that is possible, Win7 has that software built in the OS.

I'd just get a USB burner. They aren't all that expensive and they can be handy in a pinch, especially when you're using laptops with no optical drives.
