Lenovo desktop USB ports question

A friend of mine bought a Lenovo desktop PC a few months back. She tried to use the front USB ports on it and it won't detect anything. However, the ones in the back of the tower actually work.

I'm thinking that the front ones aren't hooked up to the motherboard, as a best case scenario. Worst case scenario, they simply don't work. In the worst case scenario, what would be my options as far as fixing or replacing them?

Check the wiring of the cable from the front ports to the motherboard. Make sure the pin out of the cable matches the pin out of the header on the motherboard. I have one PC that for some reason the manufacturer decided to use a non standard pin out. The + and - data pins were reversed. so those ports didn't work. Once I found the problem I carefully swapped the wires in the cable around to fix it.
