This game deserved a more dedicated thread.

First off, watch this and be amazed:

Short but sweet.

From IGN.com:
Aonuma admits Nintendo captured a vast open world in the original NES Zelda game, and the concept slightly changed after the series shifted to 3D polygon graphics. Hardware limitations made it difficult to create one single large landmass for the player to explore; so separate zones were stitched together to make the world seem bigger. A linear path was established to take players on a continuous journey.

Aonuma expressed that he wants to take the series back to those roots of a continuous open world, one where players can visit areas out of order. "That's a convention we should keep," he enthusiastically said.
In other words, the next of Legend of Zelda game returns to its roots of the first Zelda game on the NES-- one open, continuous world on the level of Skyrim. You can approach puzzles from different ways. The draw distance showcases what the Wii U is capable of in portraying a truly vast and open-ended Hyrule. The game, even in its brief teaser, looks beautiful, large and truly open.

Want to climb that mountain in that distance? You can.

Monsters chasing you from field to forest? It's possible as can be seen in the brief teaser.

Unlike Ocarina, Wind Waker, and Twilight Princess, the new game, to me, looks like it'll be more dynamic and open than previous 3D Zelda games.

From Reddit's /r/Zelda subreddit:
New Zelda

  • Tries to have a wide, connected world like the original game, but 3D.
  • Massive, vast world. You can reach mountains in the distance in screenshot(?)
  • Non-linear storyline
  • Giant, octopus spider that shoots lasers chases Link on Epona
  • Link wears blue, has a ponytail, looks like a girl (Looking back at a screenshot, he has similar hair to SS Zelda. Maybe the son of Link and Zelda in Skyward Sword?)
  • Magic bow used to kill monster after it chases him
  • Cel shaded art style, more realistic than Wind Waker. TP meets WW.
Who's looking forward to this? I definitely am!

Personally I'd rather they just ditch the cell shading all together.

Nintendo finally figured out this whole crazy "open world" concept?

The video looks great, however I think it makes them look stupid the way they were talking about it.

I was looking forward to a Zelda that looked like the tech demo from a few years ago, but I'm in no way disappointed with what was shown. It looked pretty good to me and I can't wait for the full release. Skyward Sword was a bit underwhelming for me, hopefully that is not the case with this game.

Same here. But, I really think this looks good, even with cell shading.

Wii U is definitely coming into it's own, I'm just hoping it's not too late. :/ Nintendo first party games are usually what sell the systems, and it's been mediocre up until now.

I'm actually a fan of both of their modern art styles. I could have gone either way really. This looks quite cool, I like the open concept. I wonder if some areas will just be ridiculously difficult to be in though, if you're not prepared enough to be there. (or if they'll balance it, and just allow most of the story to be completed out of order...) I'll be buying this for sure. By 2015 I assume November 2015. That's a while...

I really liked Twilight Princess for what it's worth...
Cell shading less textures more performance plus Anime is big in Japan yet I think....

What is this, an alternative universe? Every damn Zelda game is "open world."

The Skyrim influence wasn't a rumor I see...

Hello Nintendo, you have my attention.

Now give us a new F ZERO....

Not exactly. Typically you are walled off from new places until you complete each section. Yes, eventually by the end, you can travel to most/all of the places that you've already been, but there may or may not be anything new to do there (depending on which game you're talking about.) You also typically can't just walk from one side of the map to the other. You kind of can toward the ends of Ocarina and Twilight, but it's still separated by a loading period (however miniscule that may be.) Also, in most cases, you can't complete quests, or perhaps in a very limited way) out of order, except side quests or mini games.

It sounds like they just want to make the world more seamless, and leave more up to the player. Can't be bad either way.

Love the visual style! Always have, wind waker was gorgeous even on the gamecube. This, among the other Nintendo releases of the last year or so, has gotten me pumped for the Wii-U.

I was thinking the opposite that is all areas will be too easy. Unfortunately, Zelda games are too easy at least the action part, not so much the puzzles or solving things though. I don't think I ever died once in Twilight Princess. Pretty much every Zelda game requires some item/weapon to advance into the game with the exception of A Link Between Worlds. There was no sequential order in that and it seemed pretty open at the beginning. It was a good game, and I liked it. I just didn't like how all weapons were available early in the game. That ruined it a bit.

I wished Nintendo would make another time-based Zelda like Majora's Mask. That concept was so fun and innovative. That and Twilight Princess were my favorites.

Yeah I'm pretty geeked for this. That looks totally awesome! I'm a fan of both of the newer art styles of Zelda.

Yar, looks really good. Personally I'm a huge fan of this art-style, when I heard 'cel-shaded', I was thinking more Wind Waker style. But this, this is more of a quality, mature look. This type of look will stand the test of time, imo.

This looks amazing and I hope they ditch ALL motion controls.

The Wii sold well and Mario Galaxy and the Zeldas were amzing games. However the motion controls just straight up killed it for me. I got tired of flicking my wrist over and over trying to play twilight princess. Killed the Wii for me so I moved on. If I remember correctly even the prime remakes had the motion controls baked in.

Considering picking up one of these Wii U bundles for SSB, Zelda, Etc.

Hopefully Mario Kart 8 is an indication of the direction they're going. In MK8, the motion controls are optional (at least for the gamepad, I haven't played with a wii-mote yet). By default, it's uses the gamepad as a normal controller, which I was pretty happy to see.

I thought Skyward Sword was perfect. Other than the twirl I don't remember many controls in Galaxy?

They should make it optional at least.

MK8 lets you use a Nunchuck with a normal Wiimote to avoid motion controls. If you have just Wiimotes, you need to tilt to steer.

Also I am not sure if MK8 is a good poster boy for control scehemes, last weekend we got up to 4 players at my friend's house and ended up with everyone using a different controller setup

Gamepad
Pro Controller
Wiimote + Nunchuck
Wiimote

Preferably we would have just used 4 Wiimotes and no motion controls to keep things fair.

Now they are coming out with Gamecube controllers for Smash Bros, so that will add another controller to the mix.

I only played the first Mario Galaxy but I remember the twirl and having to point at the screen to pick up bits. Got old quick, but the gameplay was so good I put up with it.

Didn't even try Mario Galaxy 2.

In Twilight princess I got quickly tired of flicking my wrist and the poor controll that came with it. Felt sloppy. Had given up on the Wii when skyward sword came out.

When is someone going to jump in this thread to tell us the Wii U is dead? :p

Really glad to see this. Good showing from Nintendo at E3. I need to finish Wind Waker, dammit!

Missed out on the 2 best games Nintendo had to offer.

Twlight Princess was a mess because they ported it from the Gamecube. It was never meant to have motion control, they forced it on you. Skyward Sword was probably the first game to have me say maybe motion control can be something after all.

SMG2>>>>>>>>>>>>SMG IMHO,

Yet I don’t remember much motion control for either.

Maybe the Motion Control Plus made that big of a change too. I got my Wii late in the game when it was included. Don’t know.

I agree, SMG2 is more of the same, but improved in just about every way. Skyward Sword definitely had better motion controls than Twilight princes. The only thing I didn't like was having to do that twisty water dash thing while swimming. Otherwise the controls were pretty tight. I did like Twilight Princess better than Skyward Sword overall, but both are excellent games. Really looking forward to the new one.

If you're going to play Twilight play on Gamecube.

I've played both. Actually played on Wii first, so I got used to how the maps were mirrored first. When I played the GC version, it took a while to figure out where everything was. :D Honestly, it plays great on both, and I don't really have any complaints about the Wii version. I never felt the controls lacking on it, I just felt that they improved it with Skyward Sword using the WM+. That said, I do prefer a regular game pad overall.

To quote Dinero in Ronin though, "I don't know, you give me the tools, I do the job..." same things with game controls. :D

I know! I'm actually a little concerned something happened to teletran, he's normally all over a topic like this!

I think TaintedSquirrel is filling in over in the E3 thread in General Gaming. :D

Lol, yeah they mirrored the game because Link is a lefty with his sword and majority of people are right handed.

By F-Zero you mean Metroid right? :p

I'm with you on that. Preferably a 2D gameplay w/ 3D background metroid that uses the wiiU tablet for the map, items, etc..

As far as the art style in this game, I'm all for it. I really hope it plays similar to fallout 3/NV and Skyrim....Man that would be awesome.

I'm glad to hear that this is going to be more open. My favorite Zelda* is the original because of the exploration.

* have only played original, 2, LttP, and WW.

You never played Ocarina of Time? WTF.

Also...Link's Awakening, Majora's Mask, A Link Between Worlds...

Dude, get a 3DS and play ALBW and OoT3D at the very least. Excelent games

Hopefully we ll get MM3D before e3 ends (or even better, MM WiiU for 2014)

Never owned an N64 and I didn't preorder windwaker :-/

Ocarina of Time would still be worth playing IMO. There are so many ways you can get ahold of it to play it now. I recently replayed the N64 version a few months ago and still found it to be really solid!

I beat it on my daughter's 3DS, and while it's very much improved, the N64 version is still great. I'm mid-way through a game of it with my other daughter. :D They make me play all the hard parts.

I've yet to complete Majora's Mask. The timed thing didn't really grab me 100%, though I do think it's a cool mechanic. In practice, it can become annoying. However, I do plan to finish it up at some point. The problem is I have no idea what I was doing before I stopped playing last time. I'm almost tempted to start over completely.
