"While the sample size is small, this new data shows that some Microsoft employees still feel marginalized within Microsoft’s culture due to their gender identity.

While a few hundred employees contributed to this internal sharing of salary information, there are other pools of salary data available online. The largest is Levels.fyi, which has nearly 4,000 entries from Microsoft employees, which date back to 2017.

Other tech companies have salary sharing drives as well. Former Google employee Erica Joy started an infamous salary sharing spreadsheet at the company, which she chronicled in a Twitter thread in 2015."

How is it leaked if people submitted the data? We don’t say that this forum is leaking our usernames or our thread post. We don’t call it leaked that you can see names on Facebook. Leaked to me would imply a copy of the accounting data made it to the internet and all employees records were exposed. If people are going online and filling out a form to disclose what they make to me that isn’t in the same category

It is a spreadsheet that was meant only for Microsoft internal use.

Don't leak salary data!

All it does is embarrass big companies and force them to pay you more.
If you know that your direct equal in the company is getting 50% more than you, just because of "charisma," then won't that make you feel rotten?

If you do the same work but get paid less, isn't that just a dark, terrible fate? Or worse, if you're an honest person who doesn't play the charisma game, you might work more, but still get paid less. The only way to know is to share!

Anyone who doesn't share is a coward, and that's the dark truth. People who share this information are extremely dangerous to the company. But only to companies that pay the same quality workers different amounts of money. The only way for everyone to be safe is if everyone shares. Anonymous or not, this information is how we play the capitalism game fairly.

You think it's "socialist" or something to share? Heck no. This is hacking the raw core of capitalism, and nothing could be more sublime.

Companies don't need your pity. They would do worse. They have access to lawsuits, to mass markets, to huge investments, to media, advertising, and anything else. What do you have but this?

Even if you get paid more, you're still just a worker. You still have to obey.

When you use a online form to collect the data and share the results all over facebook, doesn't sound like you were trying to keep the data secret. The group from Microsoft gave it to this website. So it doesn't sound like they were expecting this data to stay inhouse but compiled a list of data, analyzed it then started handing it out to show how pay is based on skin color, race, gender and age.

It's employees sharing info. It's just a compensation negotiation tool.
As an aside, in these things, no one actually has to tell the truth, and the company can easily dismiss it, if you actually do try to use it as a negotiation tool. As always, you better be worth what you are asking for, or be really good at faking it.

Meanwhile quite a few of the rest of us get paid based on things like how much education, experience, years with said company, and that's it... some also get "let go" prematurely to get younger cheaper workers in too... and to the whole "gender/race inequity" I couldn't give less of a fuck, especially when I see those salaries.

The only thing that matters to me is a person's quality of work. A person who looks up OR down on a person because of some social attribute will never be on my level.

Only quantity of quality truly matters.
