Regardless what you think of this guy's idea, you have to admit that you chuckled when he said cell phones are a "vending machine for porn."

Following Utah's resolution declaring pornography a "public health crisis," a lawmaker is drafting bills to mandate anti-porn filters on cellphones and computers at public libraries. In an interview with FOX 13, Sen. Todd Weiler, R-Woods Cross, said he is drafting legislation that would require cellphone makers to install porn-blocking filters on their devices, which would be removed if it's verified the owner is over 18.

they already do that in the UK (EU as well i think) norm porn and gambling or other adult stuff

I bet this guy has a huge cache of kinky porn hidden somewhere.
LOL he could very well have. Utah is a high consumer of internet porn. Also at the end of the article has his "for the children" disclaimer.
"Everything I am doing and everything I am trying to do is about protecting children," he told FOX 13. "If adults want to look at pornography, that's their constitutional right."

I think his intentions are noble, but realistically not possible and waste of time. Bad or ignorant parents are going to be bad and/or ignorant parents. Can't outlaw stupid.

One of the reasons I would like to finally move out of Utah, we have far bigger issues and our state leaders would rather focus on porn and suing movie theaters... *smdh*

Is viewing pornography a constitutional right?

I'm just trying to think what that would classify under, I'm guessing it would be the viewing aspect. But we do not have the right to view everything, so it doesn't sound like a valid claim.

How is the tech industry up there? I have heard about some very large data centers (government, adobe)......Provo or some city. Are there more tech related things moving into that area?

A health crisis or public health crisis is a difficult situation or complex health system that affects humans in one or more geographic areas (mainly occurred in natural hazards), from a particular locality to encompass the entire planet. Health crises generally have significant impacts on community health, loss of life, and on the economy. They may result from disease, industrial processes or poor policy.

It might be an issue needing some addressing but a public health crisis, no.

Don't these old farts have anything better to do than to impose their own will and/or idea's on everyone else?

SCREW THEM.

if they imprement like in the UK then you just need to prove age to remove the over 18 block (maybe 16 in USA but 18 would cover all states i guess) does not stop VPN or using Opera mini with extreme compression on (all traffic is via Opera turbo on extreme)

Give it a year or two, someone will find all of his kiddy porn on a drive somewhere. There kind of people are always trying to cover up their own activities.

Whether you call yourself a liberal or a conservative it doesn't take a lot of effort to point out the amazing number nannies and thought cops.

Taking bets on how long it takes for him to get caught paying a hooker to beat the shit out of him after she dresses him up like a poodle.

1st Amendment.

True. I don't have children and I admit that I do understand why people want this kind of stuff. I wouldn't want my kids surfing for porn while they were still on the young side. But given the state of technology today that's pretty much a pipe dream.

Maybe we should block public access to recipes for anything that contains liver, I hate liver.

Maybe we should block what lawmakers say on cell phones and computers.

.

Sounds like a perfect opportunity for a service/app for kids phones. Blocking, logging etc for the parents to review.

I still think its pretty amazing how early parents are buying phones for their kids. Sure I get tween-teen age cause they are out and about more on their own and need to call home. Back in the day the limitation of the phone being in the house put a check on the obsessive phone behavior, now is "phoning" all day long for some (granted its text and IM etc instead of calls but same difference).

Yes. Freedom of expression includes creation of pornography. No matter how distasteful you find it.

Isn't more of a double standard then anything else. In a way you are not required to look at it some people can "like" things without it needing attention of US senators , I mean as an example Pepsi and Coca Cola , there is no law against or for any of these while you might have a very strong feeling towards one or the other. It might even end up you having a negative feeling for people drinking one or the other.

While in the real world there is nothing wrong with both Cola. This might even work backwards for porn and draw more attention to it.

Would have sworn this was in Oklahoma. Last week down in OK, the religious whacko fundie Okies were trying to make masturbation illegal.

I want a law that instantly fires politicians permanently when they write up legislation this stupid. Perhaps if their job was actually on the line for putting forth legitimately retarded idea's, they wouldn't do it as much.

just teach everybody complete anatomy and physiology in grade school then they won't be scared by the reality of human nature.
also teach manners....

This would be hard to enforce. Good luck with that. As a parent, I would love it if I could flip a switch and block access to all questionable content on the Internet. I already know that I can't do this.
Sure, I could go to a white list approach - but what happens when my kids go to a friends house that doesn't have a filter?

It's so amusing when the people that decry the 'nanny state' want to pass more regulation to form a 'nanny state'

There are plenty of liberals who possess that paraphilia, too. In fact, they tried to abolish age of sexual consent laws in 1972, but apparently didn't hire enough lobbyists to influence enough politicians, entertainers, journalists, professors, scientists, psychologists, and the like to change's the public's perception.

Mormons, in their never-ending crusade to cock-block anything that might actually be considered fun, have initiated legislation to literally block cocks.

The tech sector is definitely growing here and seems to be on a fairly good pace. There is the NSA Data center in the salt lake area, Adobe just south of the Salt Lake Valley, Utah Valley (Provo, Orem, American Fork, etc.) is seeing a lot of tech growth mainly in development and i think there are a couple good sized data centers there as well. Pay seems lower than other tech centric cities/states and some attribute that to the low cost of living but personally I think the cost of living here is a little high and slowly getting worse.

Also most areas outside the Salt Lake Valley tend to be much more conservative than the SLC area if that is a concern for you.
