TechEphiphany on YouTube has released a video that shows how to overclock the previously multiplier locked $55 AMD Athlon 200GE with Radeon Vega 3 Graphics. The MSI B350M Gaming Pro motherboard was updated to the latest AGESA 1006 BIOS. The options to overclock the processor were present after the bios update. He was able to overclock his AMD Athlon 200GE to 3.8GHz from the base frequency of 3.2GHz. He demos the overclocked processor in Battlefield 4 as shown in the following video.

MSI B350M Gaming Pro AGESA 1006 BIOS. Mulit + BCLK OC. RAM and NB speed's are OC'd when increasing the BCLK.

If you cant afford the double the money to get at least double the performance by getting a 2200g....

I cant think of an extra 50 bucks well spent.

I think it is easy to make these comments. Certainly for me today an extra $45 would be nothing, but when I was a kid and had nothing but my paper route to finance my upgrades, every last dollar spent was a huge deal.

Also, there are so many parts in a PC, and for every single one of them there is an argument that "for only $X more you can get so much better performance". Problem is, if you go after all of them, it's no longer a small amount of money. All of those "small amounts more" add up.

I think this could make for a great starter PC for some kid.

There will nevere be a celearon300a again
Celeron 300a was cheap CPU that when overclock outperformed top of the line CPU's
The get the same effect as the celeron300a oc this chip would need to competed with a ryzen 1700+ when oc'ed

However it is still really good news

We got pretty close with the 2009 Athlon X2's based on the Phenom II X4 Deneb silicon, but with two cores and extra cache disabled.

With the right motherboard you could unlock the two extra cores and the disabled cache, and essentially turn them into a Phenom II, and then overclock the snot out of them with a good cooler. I never lucked out on the cache, but I was able to unlock one to have 4 cores and overclock it to 4.2Ghz once, which was pretty decent in 2009-2010 (can't remember exactly when it was)

I see where you are going but if memory serve me well ( it might not) even then the phenom II was not top of the line
But renableding core its definitely a must to be able to get that "celeron 300a" feeling back

There was a core2duo that overclocked like 66% but then lacked 2 cores to be top end line vs the core2quad)

Agreed. That's why I said we got close.
The AMD chips overclocked well hitting an unheard of over 4Ghz at that time, but at those clocks they were only just barely competitive with Intel's core 2 duos of the time. Still, it was a cheap low end CPU, that could play with the big boys after some tweaking. It didn't outright beat them, but could play with them.

it really makes me take a step back and be grateful when I see these humble gamers working hard to get a few more frames out of their $55 processor. Boy, it really helps you understand needs versus wants and what a great country the USA is.

So, I went back through my notes, and it looks like I misremembered my details. Turns out I never actually used an Athlon X2, I actually used a Phenom II X2. I could have gotten the same results (with a little luck) with an Athlon II by unlocking the extra cache, but for whatever reason the Phenom II X2 555 BE was th eone I got at the time (maybe there was a sale or somethign, can't remember. I think I got it at a Microcenter bundle deal)

Either way, I unlocked the two disabled cores, and got an all core overclock of 4.2Ghz. My notes state that it beat my my stock clocked Core i7-920 I was running at the time in benchmarks (I was experimenting with SFF cases, and didn't have enough of a cooler to overclock the i7-920, but sadly my notes don't have any numbers or which benchmarks I was running, and I just can't remember at this point.

So, clock for clock, the Phenom II's were far behind the Core 2 Duo's and Bloomfield/Nehalem core CPU's, but once you got up to 4.2Ghz they could really kick some ass much outside of their price class.

Yeah getting a $110 processor that performed like a $400.00 one was a one time deal.

Anyways great performance for super low budget. What would be a good and cheap motherboard to pair this with? (have not been following this stuff - 2011 purchase of 930 i7 > 2017 purchase of 7700k).

Oh 300a and my dual socket abit motherboard. Good memories , that's around when I just started visiting this site and another one frozen something or another. I think I remember vaguely the guy on that site and Asia carrera being friends. I loved those days.

That's the future of [H]ard, guys. Like it or not, we are getting old - our toys reflect our purchasing power, somewhat. Won't be too long before the young bucks will be stepping up with what they've got. Keeps the interest alive, and that's a good thing.

    Yes.

Where I come from, that $55 processor costs a fortune and you'll be GLAD to get your hands on one, let alone have room for improvement on top of that.

It becomes second nature to a dregree that I still have fun getting juice out of old/low-end parts, even when I have access to more powerful gear. There's something to be said about the rush you get when you beat whatever scenario you were supposed to be pigeon-holed to... =D

    Awesome!

I just ordered the 200ge for $45 to mess around with.

Is this one of those deals that the motherboard won't work right away? I'd have to get a loaner AMD cpu or something to flash the update to the motherboard?

My e6300 or whichever over clocked by almost 100% to just under 3.5ghz on water. That was a lovely feeling.

it's been said before but 50 bucks for this much performance is a sight to behold.

I remember core2duo was great. Back then when it came out I could barely afford E6300 and it was an overclocking champ. I still had my water loop from P4 and with just waterblock replacement it was clocking probably around double the stock. Suffice to say performance increase was tremendous and really made the difference back then. I know it doesn't sound [H] but for some time there has been less and less reason to bother overclocking. But yeah, on low end processors it may help but likely board deficiency and necessary cooling will defeat the improvement where one may as well get a better CPU option instead.

It really is, wow. Totally playable little rig for someone hard up on cash. I just got a 2200G for an htpc, has me intrigued to see what the little guy can do.

I dunno about overclocking these days. I ran a Q6600 at a 60% OC with no voltage increase for something like 7 years. I have some of the most absolute overkill water cooling ever seen which probably helped the longevity. These days processors are so powerful I don't bother and I don't have time for overclocking as a hobby. The tiny percentages I see in overclocking these days leave me feeling uninspired.

    It's a bit of a Damocles sword.

Sure we can afford more stuff in the U.S., but honestly, I'd trade most of my stuff for a little bit more financial and medical security in the form of a social safety net.

When I lived in Sweden our incomes were lower than the U.S. and computer and stereo parts and cars all cost much more than here, but damn. I never needed to worry about getting a large medical bill, or being laid off, or being ripped off by an insurance company.

As I have gotten older I have realized that the peace of mind is worth more than any stuff in the world.

Throw a 2200g at it and see what happens

But yeah, on a bang for the buck level this is pretty cool. I've moved beyond overclocking bargain bin stuff personally, but I totally understand it from a limited budget point of view.

Yea my Q6600 is still doing 3.2ghz somewhere in some old ladies house. She is still happy with it since i installed the ssd.

    I still OC'd my ryzen 3 2200g to 4 ghz :)

Yeah I just got my son a rasp pi for xmas to play around with. He already had a beast of a desktop but I thought it would be interesting to watch him geek out and try some programming on the pi. I might just get myself a 200ge and make a tiny pocket gaming box to play with while he's tweaking his pi.

you mention that you are from sweden and criticize the entire US system often on these news boards. could you shut up lol? cheap CPUs have really nothing to do with your political opinions.

1.) I am born an American citizen, and have never held citizenship in any other country. I've lived in a few others though, so I have a more global perspective of what life is like in different places.

2.) You brought up the country comparison.

    Remember this little bit?

I'll shut up about it if you will :p

You know full well I didn't bring that up to brag, just to cut off your allusion to the "you are a foreigner without the right to an opinion on my country" line of thinking in your previous post.

I do speak three languages, English, Swedish and German. I also understand an additional 2-5 (Norwegian, Danish, Dutch, Portuguese, Spanish) with varying amounts of difficulty.

I don't claim to be familiar with the entire world, just simply pointing out that typically the "America, fuck yeah" type of comments we saw earlier in this thread generally come from eoplep who don't have a very large frame of reference.

I love my country, but I also realize that there are benefits and drawbacks to ever place on this planet, and try to counter over-promised views whenever I encounter them.

I apologize if I misinterpreted the tone of your original post. Tone can be tough sometimes in written form.

And with that I am going to self regulate here, because this has gotten way to far off topic. I'd be happy to continue to discuss with you via PM.
