Hi guys,

So the last build I did was in 2011 with a MSI p67a-g65 and i7 2600K processor. I upgraded it recently with an Nvidia 1070 GPU. Now I want to upgrade the motherboard and processor as well. I would like to stick with an i7 but not sure if I should spend the dollars on an extreme edition version.

What's the best bang for the buck motherboard and processor combo? Should I go x99 or z170 chooser?

Would I even notice much of difference going from 2600K to 6700K?

Thanks!

That 1070 is already needing some extra CPU horse power...
But you might need to consider some memory as well.

CPU: Intel Core i7-6700K 4.0GHz Quad-Core Processor ($328.99 @ SuperBiiz)
Motherboard: ASRock Z170 Extreme6 ATX LGA1151 Motherboard ($151.98 @ Newegg)

The mobo has alot for 150$ and great for overclocking.
Dont forget to match this with a nice pair of memory sticks and a decent cooler.

If not sure about spending money of the extreme version you probably do not need it. 6700K is a pretty big upgrade from 2600K if you are just gaming.

If you have the 2600K OCed to about 4.5GHz then it will stay current for a little while longer. Now that it's so old and you have the upgrade bug, might as well overclock the heck out of it to tide you over longer and when it dies, you have a real reason to upgrade ;)

There is a performance upgrade from the 2600K to the 6700K for sure. But the question is, will the gain be worth spending for the new platform (MB/CPU/RAM)? Only you can decide that.
