I decided to get laser eye surgery and I'm going to go for in the next couple of months. I just wanted to see if there were any gamers that did it and what their experience has been. Does affect gaming at all?

One issue I have right now is some (very few) games really tire out my eyes, especially Guitar Hero games. My eyes start to tire out and blur after the second song and I rarely play more than 4 songs straight. Oh and games/videos on my ipod tire my eyes out too, but thats not really that big of a deal. No I'm not going for the surgery for this reason... I just hate contacts & glasses and I've had enough.

Not to threadjack, but ive been meaning to have this done as well.

Does anyone have any recommendation for doctors in the Washington DC/Baltimore area?

I had my eyes fixed and I felt like Superman (hard to concentrate on anything since you can see everything) until I got used to it. The only thing I noticed gaming-wise is that dusty televisions and monitors bug the crap out of me since I can see it now.

lol yeah you get rid of the glasses or contacts that have minor imperfections... I wish to god I could afford to have LES... I've saved money for it but always ended up spending it elsewhere, so until they start adding this to insurance plans I think I'm completely out of luck... Sadly like many affected people out there, I'm considered 'legally blind'. Screwed up, I can be arrested for driving without my glasses :'(

guitar hero kills my eyes too!!! i have contacts and they dry out big time when i play guitar hero. but if im not wearing my contacts and play it still dry my eyes out. my friend who has perfect vision say that it happens to him too. what i do now is i try to blink as much as possible during the easy parts so my eyes dont dry out. sometime i just get crazy and play parts with my eyes closed!!

yeah i never noticed thing like that till i got contacts, and it is real distraction.

I've gotten Lasik and it has been wonderful. I worn both contacts and glasses and I was just sick of it. I spent $4500 on mine 3 years ago and it's been the best investment I've ever made. Every single day I wake up and see perfectly is just amazing.

As far as gaming, it's the same. Your eyes may be a little dry for a few weeks after the surgery but after that, it's been perfect. Guitar Hero also drys my eyes out but it's because I'm not blinking enough.

i need glasses to see far ( myopia i think , english isnt my native language) but i wish to get the LES in my mid 30's since im still playing a lot . Cause gaming in the dark like i do isnt good for your vision

I have only one negative thing to say about lasik eye surgery.

I find it very difficult to pull off those all nighters and game up until like 6AM. I used to wear glasses and I never had a problem staying awake and seeing clear. Once I hit like around the 2-3AM mark, its really hard to focus on things and it gets tough to stare at a monitor. I never had this problem with glasses.

just my 2 cents, I love it and I would never want to go back to wearing glasses.

OP, answer this honestly

Would you not get lasik if it did affect your "gaming"? Not to sound like an ass, but i would rather see without my glasses than play games (just my opinion)

When i have the ability to get lasik, i'm not putting gaming into the equation, these are you eyes your talking about here.

Don't mean to hijack the thread but has anybody gotten floaters thanks to gaming? About 1 year ago my retina got slightly detached and every time I have a head ache or just focus in on something I can see my blood cells coming in and out of few.

No, thats messed up, i have looked closely into eye surgery, that aint normal.

Halos are normal for about 2 years, possible wrinkles in your vision, i would consult your Dr.

My sister who is a certified MD told me that that is perfectly normal but I dunno. I gonna see my family doctor, he's a good guy so is his son.

never use viagra while gaming ,you may grab the wrong joy stick.
also the colors in the game will change. pilots cant take pills before flying because of this.

Like you said, it's my eyes I'm talking about so I would like to know how it's going to affect any part of my life before going for it, even the minor parts like gaming.

I'm not a hardcore gamer, when I'm into a game I'll play 3-5 hours a week, when there is no game I like there will be spurts of months between I play any game at all. Like I said before gaming has had no influence on my decision to go for it, it's hatred of glasses & contacts.

Ok, well in that case, you may experience halos and eye strain for awhile,

I personally wouldn't ever get LASIK/etc. done... I don't really find glasses (or contacts for some) to be that much of an inconvenience, and I would rather not have my eyes messed with leaving me to deal with should anything go wrong, or just be miserable for a couple of years even if it works properly. Just my two cents :).

you know how your eyes get worse over time? well what happens in 5-10 years when your eyes get worse? do you have to have the sergery again? or do you just go back to glasses?

I really want to get laser eye surgery, im too scared tho. Do they still use a knife to slit of the layer so they can use the laser?

I had Lasik back in '99 and have never regretted it. Long gaming sessions tire my eyes out too, but that probably isn't related to Lasik. If the same happens to you, just take a break every hour or so for ten minutes. I find that helps a lot.

Do they still use a knife to slit of the layer so they can use the laser?
While I wouldn't call it a knife, yes, that's essentially what happens.

For those who are concerned about something going wrong, you can do one eye at a time. This will give you time to adjust and see how you like it. Of course, this assumes you'll be wearing a contact lens in the other eye. I'd recommend it to anyone though. The prices are so cheap now I envy the price you guys can have it done for.

Your eye sight does not simply degrade over time. The lens can become stiff and therefore have a reduced focal range, but your eyes do not simply go bad on their own. It could be genetic, but it might as well be like a bone spur in that case. Once you have the surgery it will not simply revert/degrade after a few years. Unless you get corrective eye surgery at a young age I would not expect the same problem to present itself at any point for the rest of your life.

To the OP, my father had LASIK, after using contacts for most of his life. The only complaint I have ever heard is that he simply isn't used to seeing so well, and for a while it was distracting. You shouldn't incur any adverse effects from the surgery itself, regardless of what you do. For all intents and purposes, it is like having eyes of the same vision that have not had the surgery. I recommend you go through with it. MAYBE you will want to back off from, or avoid gaming all together for a few weeks, since people tend to blink much less while gaming. After the first month I doubt you will need to worry about causing problems with the healing process, if it is ever any concern in the first place.

every time I have a head ache or just focus in on something I can see my blood cells coming in and out of few.

Floaters aren't really blood cells. The inside of your eye is filled with a clear fluid, and it's normal for that fluid to develop some solid or gummy clumps eventually. You can see them when you look at a light background with your eyes open slit-wide. They're nothing to get worried about.

If you ever notice flashes of light running across your vision like a zipper, see an eye doc immediately because that's your retina starting to detach (as CptFalcon apparently experienced, and my mom has also). Ignore it and you'll end up permanently blind in that eye.

The only thing I've heard about it is that it has adverse effects on your night vision.

not just that I've read that lasik can either give you "floaters" or make them worse and I already have a mild case of them, theres no way in hell I'd want to make it worse.. so no lazer beams for my balls

everyone has floaters, they're normal and actually considered 'healthy'. At least thats what I've always heard from my eye doctors...

I have a pretty large case of floaters but it's never distracted my vision unless I was just trying to notice them, and even then just like stewie said in the family guy episode :p they wander away lol...

I think I should try to get my BP even lower, my family has a history of High BP and my right eye is longer than the other so it really hurts when I have a headache.

This is also true. I get bug-eyed (2 months after now) if I'm at it for more than a few hours at a time. Take a 5 minute break and I'm good, but I tap out around 1-2 am.
