Does putting an SSD drive to sleep help with energy savings? SSD or whatever built in thing Apple does.

I know it really doesn't make much of a "start up" difference, I'm just curious. Nothing more. Since its still an option on new MacBooks.

Depending on the component involved, there could be one or many different sleep states it could enter. Will it make a technical difference in power usage, sure. Will it make a tangible real-world difference in the specific case you mentioned... most likely not. Per this test, the idle power usage of a Samsung 500GB 850 EVO is .02 watts. That being said, putting it to sleep may give you the extra minute? of battery power you need to finish your work.

Thanks. Just for my clarification.

I suppose once SSDs are way more mainstream that option may disappear.
