I think if your gonna buy a new HDD you really have to go with a 7200. Otherwise it's just sort of pointless. Does anyone have any suggestions on which is a good 7200RPM hdd? I've looked at several but I can't seem to find any from Seagate or Maxtor. Are Hitachi 2.5" drives any good? What drives are popular? Thanks.
I would get one of the 7200 rpm drives. There are 3, 7200 rpm notebook drives on the market that I know of.
1) Hitachi HTE726040M9AT00 40gb, 8mb cache, 7200 rpm, approx 125 dollars
2) Hitachi HTS726060M9AT00 60gb, 8mb cache, 7200 rpm, approx 150 dollars
3) Toshiba MK-5024GAY 50gb, 16mb cache, 7200 rpm approx 225 dollars (hard to come by)
Best bang for the buck would be the 60gb Hitachi.
I have the Toshiba drive (MK-5024GAY) in a Satellite P25 (2.4ghz P4 HT & 512mb ram) and noticed a marked improvement over the original 4200rpm drive.
Recently I put one of the Hitachi 60gb's (HTS726060M9AT00) in the wifes Compaq Presario 2199US (AMD XP-M 2800+ & 512mb ram), an improvement over the original 4200 rpm drive but not the difference I noticed with my Satellite after upgrading it to the 7200 rpm.
Battery life is about the same.
Heat, no difference.
The Hitachi drive is very quiet.

I just bought a new hard drive for my laptop, but it hasn't arrived yet. My laptop came with a 80gb 4200rpm 2mb cache and I upgraded to a 80gb 5400 16mb cache. The 16mb cache was the main thing I was looking for as to thats where you see the performance increase over only 2mb cache. I dont think I would notice much difference between a 7200rpm 2mb and a 5400 rpm 2mb if I were to upgrade just by the rpm's.
all the reviews say the hitachi drive is very quiet. The one in my laptop now is sort of...noisy when accessing data.
The only thing that bugs me is newegg only has them OEM....which means only a 1yr warantee.
edit: oops, just saw the one with a 3yr warantee, they were just out of stock.
