sorry to burst your bubble but he's not going to find one for that price. AoC is a very demanding game, even the fully loaded gateway won't be able to handle it well.

The only laptop with an 8800M within that price range is the Gateway. Regardless of whether or not he likes how it looks, he doesn't have a choice unless he saves up a lot more dough.

Also, you have 8800 GTS's out, and now 9600, 9400's, 3400's that are more than capable of playing most games that are out right now. That's my 2 cents. :)

    My reasons.

    1. Hate huge laptops. Even with 17" WD, the screen is too small for gaming.
    2. You can only game at home, unless you are pretty good with a touchepad.
    3. Can't upgrade vga. Even the most expensive laptop will get obsolete fast enough.

I remember when my friend bought a VAIO for $2,5K, and after FarCry release his laptop was thrown to shame.

I see so much waste buying a gaming laptop. My two cents again.

Those are reason I totally agree with.

But, to one his/her own. People have different needs and gaming though popular and growing is definately not the only thing on a consumers mind when purchasing a laptop. I keep in mind 3 things when purchasing a laptop( like a triangle)

    Capability

    Oppurtunity Productivity

If I'm capable of doing something that will further develope an idea then I'll consider(work wise)

If I have oppurtunity, for example to play a game then I'll consider

If I know I'll accomplish my work and be productive with the item, then i'll buy

I might not want to always play a game but having that capability and at the oppurtuned time, priceless.

I feel ya though as some lappy's that have emerged are just ridiculous, being condsidered to be mobile when there not.

    1) Of course, if you travel a lot, or want to game from places not at your home (like a LAN party) its about a billion times easier to just bring a notebook. Ive played most of my WoW on a laptop just because I would watch a movie or something from the couch and bang away on keys. I presume when someone wants a laptop, they are not planning to leave it on the desk 24/7

    2) Mice fit quite nicely in laptop bags

    3) Well desktops can get obsolete pretty quick too, and often when you upgrade just the VGA card, then the rest of the system is lagging. If you buy a gaming laptop that is a good value, you can normally sell it within 12 months or so for a good portion of what you paid for it, then buy another one :p

Now, I think some of the laptops on the market are ridiculous since they sacrifice the whole "portability" idea too far. I've gamed a lot more on 14 and 15 inch laptop screens in the last couple years than I have on my desktops, because the laptop convenience just wins out.

I love my Gateway P-6860FX ... I game during my lunch hour, and between evening classes. I also occasionally game while sitting in "throne room" & before work sitting in the living room so that I don't wake up my gf :)

A gaming laptop is really worth it if you're busy or constantly on the go

It is a truely disgusting looking machine. However it gets the job done and is around the set budget, and it is one of the only rigs to do so.... so yeah. You can look around at some of the Asus offerings, but none of those have an 8800 in that price range I don't think. He can either up the budget a bit or deal with some ugly ;)

How hard would it be to paint the lid? The lid is the only part I absolutely hate.

no games require real skill rofl. What I meant was, for FPS games you need to have fast aiming and movement tactics that you can't do without a mouse. Same with RTS, you need to micro alot of stuff and without a mouse and fullsize keyboard you're at a disatvantage. Im not saying I hate mmos, just saying they're more relaxing to play. Only skill you need is...chatting? lol.

very easy to paint, but somewhat hard to paint well. you will want to get to lid off the laptop and hopefully gateway has support docs that show you how to properly disassemble the screen. then the best thing to do is have an auto body shop paint it (some will do this free if you find some geeks working there, and just paint it the color of a car they are doing). past that, you can do it your by just dollowing proper spray painting techniques.

my suggestion, dont paint it. over the years ive tried painting various electronic parts, xboxes, laptops, cases etc. and now that im older i realize it was silly, most of that stuff doesnt paint well. and if it turns out bad you hate yourself for doing it.

Come on, it's a little tacky, but it's not god-awful... I mean I would MUCH rather the FX look than an Alienware computer

I am currently playing Age Of Conan on my Gateway 6860FX (CPU upgraded to T9300)..video settings set to HIGH, 2xAA and Shadows turned off...Getting smooth 40+ FPS.

Each time I load up a game on the 6860FX I am amazed how nice of a gaming system it is.

you obviously havent played or even seen AOC... the combat is fully interactive... attack combos require multiple keys, and strafing/moving wins the day... especially during PvP engagements.

I'm also in the market for a laptop I can use for gaming... but my budget is 3k, so i hope that i have a few other options.

The SLI XPS and Alienware laptops are still too damn expensive though, so my hope lies in the new external/upgradeable GPU solutions... I'll even carry the separate adapters in my backpack if it means I can game it up in every hotel room I stay in with all settings on HIGH! :)

And then, at home, I simply dock it with a 24" monitor and fullsize keyboard :)

AMD's new puma, and the crossfire hybrid techs may solve the usual laptop limitations very very soon... If I could find a fast laptop for $1500, then add a new nvidia 280 pci-e external, it would be perfect!
