Kingston SSDs @ Amazon: 120GB $80, 240GB $170

Thanks! I bit for the 120GB@$80 - my laptop drive went bunk a few weeks ago, this is perfect to get it up and running then sell it off!

This drive uses Intel async nand and a Sandforce 2 SF-2281 controller.

Just letting you guys know.

Wow, those are great prices. Makes me laugh when I remember that I bought a 36GB Raptor in 2003 for $200!

For what you get, this is one very slow SSD in comparison to the Samsung 830, Crucial M4, Plextor M3, Kingston Hyper X, Sandisk Extreme, OCZ Agility 4, etc...

I'd almost go to say its more of a really warm deal because, the performance is mediocre in comparison to the above listed drives.

And what does that mean, exactly?

It means that at that price point it sucks. The Samsung 830 for $90 is a better value.

From best to worst for MLC NAND it goes Toggle > Sync > Async.

Samsung uses toggle, Crucial uses sync, and this kingston drive uses async. Async NAND + a sandforce controller = terrible speeds with uncompressible data.

"Terrible speeds" in benchmarks but very little difference in real world performance when you're not looking at statistics!
