I'm surprised there isn't a thread about this already, no one playing this and/or wants to talk about it!? Played for a few hours this weekend in between a few other things - really enjoying the combat, far more than its predecessors. With the flowmotion (being able to zip around from object to object; not new to this particular entry) and the constant slew of special moves that pop up throughout combat, it's a visual feast for the eyes. Audio is fantastic as well, lots of orchestral themes and playful assorted combat noises, much like we're used to, but dialed up. Not forgetting to mention the fantastic voice cast, lot of industry veterans coming back to reprise their roles.

I think it's fine to jump into if you haven't played any of the other ones, it does a semi-decent job of recapping through cinematics, but you won't understand some of the humor/commentary at times. If you're into Disney and over zealous Final Fantasy-style antagonists, with hack/slash combat on top, you can't go wrong.

Deluxe physical edition comes with a little art book and steelbook case for anyone interested.

It is on my list. I just want to clear my backlog some before jumping onto it.

Been playing through the Ass Creed series on my PS4, but I was interrupted by RE2 and have been playing that on my PC. I never had the chance to play through the original KH games, so I am going to want to do that first. Long story short, it's going to be a while before I get to KH3.

There is a video that sums up the story in KH3. It's very convoluted story that spans many games, most of them not that good. Even if you played all those you'd still have a hard time piecing together the very complicated story.

What I'm saying is just enjoy the ride that is KH3 and don't try to overthink it.

I'd agree. Playing 1 and 2 isn't enough to understand everything. Hell, the ride from 1 to 2 isn't as straightforward as you'd think. There are tons of games peppered in between to piece things together, you'd honestly have to play ALL of them to really "catch up". I'd honestly just start with KH3, but if your backlog can take it, it's not a terrible idea to play the remixes (1.5, 2.5, and 2.8). Here's a fantastic thread showing all titles and what order to play them in (if you're keen).

As has been said, playing the original games, at least for the sake of understanding the story, isn't really necessary. Don't get me wrong, I love these games, but it is the most convoluted story I've ever tried to wrap my head around. I've played every game in the series at least once through. KH1 and KH2, I've probably played 3-4 times through, and Birth By Sleep twice (which means I've experienced that story 6 times). I still don't fully understand what's going on. They seem to just make stuff up as they go and try to come up with a backwards ass way to explain it later.

They are all great games in their own right, so I'm not trying to dissuade you from playing the other games in the series first... but if you're motivation is the desire to understand the story so far, you might be just as well to watch a few youtube videos and then jump into KH3. If you're interested in playing the entire series though, don't hesitate, they are all great games.

I tried to play KH1 remaster on the PS3...got to the Little Mermaid world and kinda gave up. The combat just wasn't all that interesting for the most part and the story was gibberish, so it didn't really keep my attention. I've heard good things about KH3, though.

For a newcomer, KH1 is understandably the hardest game to get through. At the time, the combat was passable but it's dated today. I can understand KH1 being a tough game to get through without nostalgia to fuel you. If my post above wasn't an indication, the story doesn't get any less convoluted with the follow up, but the mechanics are a huge improvement. KH2's combat and overall game play is significantly improved, as are the later mobile games. Chain of Memories is a shitty card battle game, but Birth By Sleep is arguably one of my favorite games in the series and Dream Drop Distance, while a bit awkward at times, holds it's own also. All the games from KH2 on have had very similar feeling combat that IMO flows very well.

If you can't get through the first game, my previous recommendation holds... use Youtube to get the main points of KH1's story, and jump right into KH2 or Birth By Sleep. I don't think DDD's story plays huge into the overall arch, but BBS is a direct prequel to the first game, and BBS .2 bridges the gap from KH2 to KH3 and helps tie the BBS story into the Sora story. KH3's story heavily assumes you've played KH1 & 2 as well as both BBS titles.

Cool, I might try just jumping to KH2 then. I bought a pack that had both of them so I already have it.

Just rush through that Roxas part in KH2. It's like the first 3 hours of "can I play as Sora already?!"

Meh, I can't stand the english voices typically. Can you turn on japanese voices? Really though it's the frequency of loud grunting at every move that offends me most. Sometimes the japanese voices are less strident.

That is cool to see he did the voices for #3

You'd have to purchase the JP version (mine's on the way for the second playthrough), and in addition, be able to understand written or spoken Japanese (there are no EN options in the JP version from my experience, having to do with pacing and whatnot; I've seen EN subtitles on some gameplay promos however, so I could be wrong). Having played 1 and 2 in JP, it's definitely an interesting experience. They did an alright job attempting to recreate the style(s) of speaking for all of the Disney characters, but if you've seen a few scenes of each of the movies represented( in original English), you quickly throw out the nostalgia and go right into "this is now an action game that happens to have JP speaking Disney characters". English is canon, and that's just how it is.

The "grunting" or "verbal nodding/disagreeing" is just something that you get used to. In Anime and Video Games it's multiplied (read: more aggressive) than it is in real life, but I can see why some people would be put off by it.

That being said, the voice cast for the EN version is truly spectacular. It's akin to watching a series of Disney movies, which for me, is frankly awesome.

To be fair, The Little Mermaid part is horrible. I honestly did not like the game that much until after I passed that part, which is typically longer than I'd suggest anyone to play a game. And I wasn't a fan of the Gummiship, which fortunately was significantly toned down in the sequels.

That said, I'm enjoying this less than the first two. It's alright, but it feels like there's more focus on a ton of terrible minigames than the main game. Even on Proud mode, the fighting is exceptionally easy, especially since you get super moves practically every other minute.

As far as the story, I don't really play games for story, and it's suitable enough. (Just think of it like significantly shortened versions of the main movies). The voice acting though is superb. Well, except Phil. I'm a bit saddened that because the Japanese voice actor died, respect has to be paid to keep his part silent, rather than finding another voice for the part. It's weird seeing a usual loudmouth just be there, but silent.

What?! To each their own I suppose.

The story in KH is subpar at best to be honest, it’s too convoluted and has a “being made up as we go along” vibe.

Combat wise though, I’d agree, if you choose to use the abilities as they pop up AND the summons on top of that, you’re basically a living god. I wonder if there’s a Sepiroth like fight in this one.

I've played through the first level (Olympus) and if you try to get the story you'll end up spending way too much time trying. The gameplay is fun, the voice acting is forced and halting. All in all, I can't see myself finishing this one.

But that's me - old fart waiting for Crackdown 3 lol

My only suggestion.... IF you have never played Kingdom Hearts before and are planning on playing 3, I cannot suggest enough getting Kingdom Hearts: The Story So Far. There is a lot of events in KH3 that are confusing if you haven't played any previous game.

I just started up a playthrough of Kingdom hearts 1 on ps4. I originally got part way through KH1 on ps2 years ago but never finished. I'm gonna take some time to get through the other games. I'm sure KH3 will be significantly lower in price by the time I'm ready to buy it, haha.

I never played the Kingdom Hearts series and recently watched a streamer play the beginning of KH3. Since I never played the originals I don't have any sense of nostalgia for the series...and I felt as if the in-game dialogue and overall concept of the game felt childish. I did not feel any desire to play the game, but then again maybe I'm just too old. I feel like most people around my age picked it up for pure nostalgic reasons.

I think you're probably right to be honest myself. The Disney (and the fact that it took so long for the third iteration to come out) nostalgia drives it all home for me. Brings me back to simpler times (was in middle school when first one came out) and it's just another way to kill time and relax.

Especially the older games, not as childish as they appear. I was a freshman in high school when the first game came out, and initially I refused to play it because I thought it looked like a kids game. As with all things in high school, that changed when a girl I liked told me she played it, and I ended up really enjoying it. Once you give it a shot, you'll find that it's a game meant for adults with the characters from their childhood. KH1/2 are challenging games. On the hardest difficulty, they require a lot of thought and planning to make it through. Even on the easiest difficulty there are parts, particularly late-game boss fights, that would be a significant challenge for kids.

The mobile games are not as difficult, and likewise KH3 is (thus far) nowhere near as challenging as the first two main games. Truthfully, it's the most kid oriented out of all of them. That's not a negative thing to me, I love the series and I love this game, but it's the only one in the series I'd let my 9yo nephew take a stab at.

I just beat it tonight and it was good. It really should of came out 10 years ago. The nostalgia was gone. The voice acting was pretty good for the most part. I don't get the complaints. The cringe of constant believe in the hearts stuff really for time tho.

Finally got all the achievements. I almost 100% the game, with the exception of the second secret Gummi Fight, which requires you slow down the fight to get the 1 million points. After multiple attempts, and only getting as far as 960k, decided it wasn't worth it for just one Ultima/G.

Overall, yeah, this was definitely a Cut Scene Hunter game. The game worlds were just quick synopses of the movies. The overall plot of the game though made very little sense.

Also, I'm kind of disappointed in the Ultima Weapon. You practically need to beat the game to just get the recipe, and then the weapon really is only useful for one boss, where there are better weapons anyway for the secret boss.

The game honestly was just a bunch of terrible minigames, which I'm not a fan of (and reminded me the one thing I didn't like about my generation of video games, the handheld games like Tiger Electronics), and a decent action RPG, but suffered far too many of the JRPG flaws, such as the useless super weapons. Older RPGs at least allowed a more open ended second half, or at least a decent post game. KH3 felt like they were only designed for trophies/achievements, and that was about it.

Decent game, but not great. Overall, I'd give it a C+.

I got it for my wife for her birthday. She seems to be enjoying it. I played through to get all the hidden Mickey's and absolutely hate the combat system, kill a guy and keep swinging the keyblade an extra 50 times.

Only thing I don't understand stand is why they don't level up. On level 2 and I've farmed the toy story story store 6 times with no increase

Are you going after trophies/achievements? If so, don't really worry about farming anything. The game has enough farming for the trophies alone that I never had to go out of my way for XP. I went from like level 30->56 just getting the 200 ship kills in the Caribbean alone. By the time I got all the necessary requirements for most of the trophies, I was level 86. I played on Proud mode, and the only enemy that gave me any trouble at all was the secret boss. And you can get to level 99 extremely easily. The Olympus Battlegate (post game) gives at minimum 1 level per minute run.

For those that have it - can you remap the controls? I have the remaster and it won't let you. It's one of those games where jump and attack are backwards from basically everything else out there.

You can do it from the system settings on the PS4 version and with the accessories app on the XB1 version. I believe on the PS4 it's in the Accessibility section of system settings.

I have every single KH game and played thru them all... I even replayed KH1 KH2 remaster to fill in the time gap. Beating "Terra" in KH2 japanese version felt like a hell of an accomplishment... albeit like almost 15 years ago now. I mean since then I got a degree, bought a few houses, multiple cars... kid...

Yet here I am on a Saturday afternoon sick with bronchitis and I'm enjoying KH3 like I was a teen again.
