Kim Dotcom says that many MegaUpload accounts were held by US Government officials. And this comes as a surprise to...? The ready-made excuse will be "they are unwitting victims too" or that they were "conducting their own investigations." Duh.

Aside from preparing the cases of the Megaupload defendants, a team of lawyers is working hard to grant the site’s users access to their personal data. The cyberlocker is working out a deal with the Department of Justice to allow users to download their personal files. Interestingly enough, Megaupload founder Kim Dotcom reveals that these users include many high-ranking US Government officials.

Gotta love a case when "Criminals" are the one's that are
-Telling the truth - not lying
-Revealing all information
-Protecting our rights

that's postposterous! the government would never break the law! *whistles*

Hypocrites in the government? NEVER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yeah. I just don't believe it. Our government officials would never do something like this. They're a bastion of truth and would never do anything illegal unsavory. *sarcasm*

Seriously though the Hypocrisy and corruption in government is so outrageous it seems like most people have just given up due to the scale of it.

To bad the article doesn't state whether they were using it in a legal way or uploading copyrighted material.
If they were just using it to upload personal pics or something them I don't see the big deal. Now if they were uploading copyrighted stuff then Mr.Dotcom should let it come out in the wash during trial, if it gets that far.

This is funny, because most people I've seen use this argument on other sites are the same people who say 'MEGAUPLOAD WASN'T USED FOR ANYTHING BUT ILLEGAL CONTENT ANYWAY, LOL. GOOD THING THEY SHUT IT DOWN'.

(Not saying *you* have made that argument)

Glad you put this part in because I have never said it.
I'm sure some people do use it in that manor, but not the majority I'm sure.
I prefer to give users the benefit of the doubt unless proven otherwise.

Thank you :).

You are all acting as if "the government" is somehow some sort of alien entity not made up by people just like any other group of people. I would put good money on that many [H] users are employed by "the government' and some are even "high ranking officials" whatever that means (I guess department heads or supervisors count).

People are people, doesn't matter whom they work for. The place of employment doesn't suddenly change a person. Folks who work in government are the same lying, cheating, and selfish bastards like any other person out there.

Every one of you has broken the law at one time or another and probably continues to do so to this very day, think MP3s or even speeding which unlike copyright infringement can actually kill people.

Speak for yourself. In the course of business I have NEVER lied or cheated in any way. Not only that but I would NEVER accept employment with any government agency. I refuse to be part of the massive broken corrupt machine that is the US Federal Government.

I don't know where you are working or what you do but if everyone is lying and cheating it might be time for a new career.

I am appalled. They need to go after each and every individual on the list!!!!

oh wait, we can't do that or else there will be no government left. dang

LOL, nice quantification there, "in the course of business", that's just like the famous "I never had sex with that woman" line. Thank you for proving my point for me, I couldn't have scripted a better reply.

love to see any government officials kids and their ipad, iphones and other media devices and then i would love to see all of their media collections and receipts to go along with them...

Actually, if they were using it for illegal activities its even worse for Kimmy Boy... it proves that he DID know people were using it for illegal activities, even if those people were government officials.

Either that or the government officials weren't using it for illegal activities in which case it really has no relevance.

Granted, I have no doubt those government officials are dodgy fucks in their own right, it doesn't make Kim a saint either. I have no sympathy for the man, he made a fortune off other peoples' work. I know I know, publishers do the same thing and Kim is just being held up as an example, but I still have no sympathy for him.

True. Many keep voting for more of the same and wonder why things in this country don't change.

I disagree. I was enlightened after reading some interviews with lawmakers and articles about the many of them retiring because they're so disappointed in how little they can accomplish because of the gridlock in DC. Between those responses, there are also comments about how every time they get close to getting a plum committee assignment, or move up the ranks in seniority to become a more powerful voice in their respective body, politics interferes and their roles are reduced. Their logic is, "Why run for reelection and spend all that money if I'm not going to be any more powerful than I am now?"

Working for the government definitely changes a person. I'm sure many of them went in with the intentions of going to serve. Now they're only interested in keeping their power and accumulating more of it so they can espouse their views and dictate to the rest of us the proper way to live our lives. It's purely a penis-measuring contest between people who have the capacity to write their wishes into law. Although greed and lust for power can turn people into selfish monsters, no business or organization has the power to legally inflict those tendencies on the rest of the population unless granted it by the government.

Where does he say that? He said some of Megauploads clients were government people and never said they used it for illegal purposes. Megaupload was used for legit reasons and not just illegal purposes.

Actually, having gov't officials using MU for bad reasons shouldn't, in accordance to the laws they made (as he pointed out very nicely in his interview), shouldn't harm him in anyway, because he's not supposed to be snooping around in their accounts. The only thing it should do is prove that there were corrupt people in the govt that is trying to harm him (unless they were using it for legit purposes, but according to the government and MAFIAA, thats few and far in between, right?).

You need to pay more attention to posts before replying to them. Namely the qualifier "if" at the start of that sentence you quoted and the following sentence which you didn't quote ;)

Wait, so he's not supposed to be snooping around but he was? :p

But like I said, regardless of whether their were government officials using MU for either legit or non-legit reasons, I have no sympathy for Kim.

I'm curious, did you post this from a work computer or on company time? Just wondering...

Yes, it does make a difference and I missed it in my haste to respond, sorry. It wouldn't surprise me if they were using it for illegal purposes though and they are no one to be standing on the moral high ground.

Here's the thing; You are confusing politicians with government. Elected or appointed officials represent a tiny fraction of federal, state, and local government.

The Internet says that in 2010 approximately 2.5 million people were employed by the federal government. I don't have the hard numbers but my guess is that less that 0.1% of those were elected or appointed. The rest of "the government" is just working normal jobs like everyone else.

Since the US government has already decided to be completely hypocritical in this case, claiming that megaupload had no non-infringing uses, while simultanously using the service in non-infringing ways (gov't employees using megaupload to perform government business), I would just release every government file I have just to spite them. It's already a forgone conclusion that Dotcom is going to gitmo (without a trial, for the rest of his life) so he might as well give them a real reason.

The US government has shown a willingness to abuse foreign laws in order to extradite Dotcom and others. Normally, in order to be extradited, a criminal has to have broken a law in their own county, which is why muslim countries can't extradite people for being anti-muslim. However, the US is a special case due to the extremely one-sided (one-way) extradition treaties it has with other countries, meaning that pretty much everyone in the world, regardless of the laws in their home country, is also subject to all of the laws of the US as well. (also, extradition treaties are generally treated as foreign policy, not as law, so there is rarely any congressional/parliamentary oversight of these secret one-way extradition treaties) Any country that doesn't accept these one-way extradition treaties suddenly finds itself the target of powerful US lobbyists. For example, if the US can't use extradition to enforce US-style copyright law in Sweden, it simply changes Swedish copyright law (through the use of these well-funded lobby groups, some of which have yearly budgets exceeding the entire GDP of some counties).

Eh, I'm of a diiferent than you. I do, but if he was actually charged with like insider trading or embezzlement, then no... I wouldn't either. But he isn't.

You have never worked for any publicly traded company have you?

If the CEO of a company makes more money per hour than most of the employees make per year, then everyone in the chain of command, from top to bottom, is lying and cheating.

Proof or it didn't happen.

And those folks don't matter in terms of determining policy or the substantial actions governments take like voting for and signing laws, initiating lawsuits, enforcing laws, running agencies, signing treaties... I was referring to specifically to those in positions which are able to take such actions but I also believe that working for any level of government is certainly a different experience from working in the private sector. The same rules don't apply.

oh shit. cat's out of the bag.

the gov't members are now rushing to wipe their hard drives of all the illegal porn and movies they downloaded.

if i am not mistaken, they took down MU because multiple repeated takedown notices were not properly complied with.....they didn't shut it down because it was a completely and totally illegal operation, but enough of it was deemed to be illegal to warrant taking it down.....so lots of people, including people who work in the govt, could have been using the service.

use of the MU service does not mean illegal activity

Ok, maybe I should have said "one day" instead "one hour" but my point still stands.

After almost ruining HP over an 11 month span, Leo Apotheker walked away with $25 million in cash and bonuses. That works out to $13,111 PER HOUR, assuming of course that he worked 40 hours a week, every week, for 11 months straight (highly unlikely). $4.5 million of that money was JUST for "relocation expenses" which probably meant that he had to by a whole new set of spring, summer, fall, and winter mansions.
http://money.cnn.com/2011/09/22/technology/hp_leo_apotheker_severance/index.htm

I just did my taxes and I made roughly $13,000 total last year, which means that even a BAD CEO makes as much in one hour as I make in an entire year.

How is this not lying, cheating and stealing?
