My 7 year old kid has officially been bitten by the bug. He wants to start folding on his computer which is a socket 939 3500+. I know he can't run the client on that but it's got an SLI mobo so I was wondering if 2 450's running the GPU client would work OK. Or should I take my 260 out and put it in his and 450 SLI mine. I don't want to lose any gaming performance on mine but I want to keep the price down. Any other suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks, Ian.

take the 260 out of your computer and put it in his.. run the gpu client and the classic cpu client (aka smp client but without the -smp flag in the shortcut).. the 450's will require to many cpu cycles to run on the single core processor.. or instead of the 450's in SLI just snag a gtx 460 1GB and overclock it.. less crap to deal with when it comes to games supporting/not support SLI and you will still get 10-11k PPD out of it..

It's good to get 'em while they're young :D I started folding when I was 9 and now I'm 17 and still going strong. Relic helped my build my first computer when I was 12. It was an Athlon MP 2400+ dually.

Well I see that there is a Gigabyte 470 @ the egg for $250 AR and a Galaxy 470 for $250 @ Fry's. Might have to head over there and convince the wife that I "NEED" a 470. I need a cheaper hobby...

noooo dont get the 470.. for the love of god do not waste money on that thing.. it uses more power then the gtx 480 yet is slower then the gtx 480..

all the gtx 460's are basically the same there really isnt anything different about them and they all pretty much overclock the same minus some of the over priced gtx 460's that have crazy cooling they may get an extra 25mhz on the gpu..

really? I thought the 470 was 225 tdp and the 480 was 250 tdp.

nah the gpu voltage on the 470 is higher then the gpu voltage on the 480's.. so for the performance to power usage the 480's the better buy.. 470 power usage may get better down the road when they finally run out of failed gtx 480 binned chips and are using perfectly working gtx 480 gpu's and disabling the extra SP's.. similar to whats happened with AMD and the x2 and x3 phenom II's where they are using 100% working x4 955's and turning them into x2's and x3's..

for the cost the gtx 460's honestly the only way to go with F@H and gaming unless you some how kissed your wifes feet day and night and make a promise you will regret to have to fulfill and convince her to let you get a gtx 480..

My top recommendation would be a pair of 768MB GTX 460s. Deals for those cards are pretty common nowadays. If that's too rich for your blood, then go for a pair of 450s. They will produce more PPD than a single GTX 470 or even a 480, and it'll cost less.
