Well, both my brother's laptops (a little Atom palm-top and an older ThinkPad) ate themselves yesterday.

I'd been champing at the bit for a slightly more powerful laptop for a while (current is a ThinkPad T61p with an SSD and maxed out RAM at 8GB).

This just pushed me into it.

New and light would have been nice. But for my budget, anything I got would have been, mostly, a side-grade.

So here's how I played it.

Dell Precision Mobile Workstation M4600: $350 shipped.

16GB Crucial RAM: $100 shipped

Samsung 850 Evo SSD: $90 shipped (Signed up for an Amazon VISA card which I'll promptly cut up and never use to get a $70 gift card.)

So, in the end I wind up with a quad-core laptop sporting a minimum of 16GB (the laptop has 2 banks of 2 so I can reuse at least some of the memory currently in the system) and a solid state drive.

$550

I'd considered going with a Crucial MX300 750GB SSD. But I just wasn't ready to accept a 3 year warranty.

So, once my new laptop is put together, I'll hoover out my original one and set it up for my brother. It'll be a fairly huge step up for him.

Looks like decent set up. I've had great luck with Crystal SSD's so far. Think I got like 4 or 5 in usage right now. Have been using the SAN Disk ones as well.

I had seen some of these powerhouse laptops for sale at these prices. My only concern was only getting a few hours out of battery. Not a problem if you plan on being plugged in though.
