You cant expect the idiocracy to even know what liberty is anymore.

7 deployments in 2 wars showed me that it was all worth nothing but pure shit because we were fighting for a bunch of people that would rather have full blown communism, poverty equally distributed, and make believe safety from make believe foes. We really live in the new dark ages of pure concentrated idiotic masses of sheep.

Yeah let's behead Assange. Hes guilty of warning Earth about pure evil and warning Americans about thier despotic totalitarian regime of a government.

If America was attacked head on today, I wouldn't fight to save the nation because people want freedom, they dont give a rat's ass about liberty anymore, I would only fight to save my family from being killed. Nothing more.

Now watch as a litany of make believe over the top charges are tallied up to make Assange more evil than Usama Bin Laden.

Gave 4 years and watched friends die for this country. Couldn't agree with what you said more. There is nothing left to protect besides my family and few people close to me.

Assange showed people who were willing to really look what the hell this country has been up to. He embarrassed the entire establishment and showed how evil they were, and now he will pay with his life. This country and the world are a pathetic joke.

So if Assange can pull off leaking Trump's Tax records, will all be forgiven (other than for Trump, who would then label him a terrorist)?

Also, why can someone not be somewhat good, and also somewhat bad? Painting him with a broad brush either way is silly. He has done good things (working to publish documents to reveal the government acting secretly and in a way that is counter to the people's best interest). He has also done bad things (fleeing UK, potentially whatever happened in Sweden).

Assange hasn't violated any law. According the US Supreme Court, which ruled against the US government regarding the Pentagon Papers, a media organization is allowed to publish classified US military documents for the purpose of informing the public:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pentagon_Papers#The_Nixon_administration's_restraint_of_the_media

Assange has only spoken the truth, and leaking confidential documents isn't a crime but is something freely done by US news organizations.

Assange is a hero. The US government seeking him is entirely due to wanting retribution for exposing a lot of truth about the US government and undermining its image and reputation. There is nothing legal about what the US government is doing towards Assange.

'He did nothing wrong' - Giuliani Says Assange Should Not Be Prosecuted

It's illegal to steal documents, but it isn't illegal to publish them once receiving them from somebody else.

Julian Assange arbitrarily detained by Sweden and the UK, UN expert panel finds
UN human rights panel rejects British appeal to overturn ruling that Julian Assange is being ‘arbitrarily detained’

UN expert on torture calls on Ecuador to ‘abstain from expelling Assange’
'Greatest traitor in Ecuadorian history': Former President Correa slams Moreno over Assange's arrest
‘Dark moment for press freedom’: Edward Snowden responds to Assange arrest

The UK police have confirmed that Assange was arrested under an extradition warrant from the US.

If Assange were to be tried in a public US court, his freedom would be all-but guaranteed. But, if he's tried in a private military court, then who knows what the outcome will be.

This shows, though, that "freedom of speech" doesn't really exist in the US, and that it's only a platitude while the US actually operates out of 'might makes right', and mobster rule.

If it weren't for Snowden and Assange, we'd be in the dark about US surveillance and hacking activities, and people on LTT and elsewhere would still be calling those claims crazy conspiracy theories and laughing at people who say it's happening. We wouldn't even know that we need to be careful and protect ourselves, or how to, without those documents leaking. We'd also be more war-mongering if they hadn't leaked because we'd be experiencing a false perception of thinking that the US' geopolitical challengers are doing all these things but that the US (which is doing them more than anyone else) is some noble power that is not doing them.

Even with all the information released by WikiLeaks and those who delivered documents to them, people in the US and West are still strongly practising denial about what is going on and how extensive the US' bad faith practices go. And with all the information that has leaked, the extent of what the US is doing still goes leagues beyond what has been proven through leaked documents.

This is a very dark day for 'freedom of speech' and truth-lovers all around the world - one in which the rights of supposedly free people and the rule of law have been trampled and have been dealt a blow for everyone.

Given that the legitimate 18 counts of espionage and high crimes assange was charged with just recently, this post aged very poorly...

people who got taken in by him in full by him as some sort of freedom fighter are idiots.

One mans terrorist is another mans freedom fighter.

Maybe is the US wasnt dicking around in so many places we shouldnt be we wouldnt be harmed by the leaking of information.

Assange is a hacker who provides information. Information we should all have access to. Governments that operate in secrecy are evil corrupt entities.

That being said I dont like Assange much as a person. I think he is arrogant, prideful and thinks he is much more than he actually is. It is possible to both dislike a person and appreciate what they do.

Most combat veterans I know appreciate what he does, because he shines a light on the bullshit wars that are fought that cost our friends their lives.

He's a foreign national illustrating US war crimes. He "hurt" people committing such crimes, yes.

If the shoe was on the other foot and another country charges one of our citizens with whistle blowing their crimes, would we turn them over? I would think not. And I don't think UK should either.

I also am a vet, and I did serve this country but am ashamed of how the government handles such things.

No, the new charges under the Espionage Act don't change anything about that post. Those new charges, which have been talked about as possible for years, accuse Assange of being guilty of what are basic journalism practices, and are what Obama's government chose to not accuse Assange of because of the danger doing so would pose to the journalism profession.

Since the new charges, even outlets that derided Assange while he was in the Ecuadorian embassy, attacked WikiLeaks, and cheered Assange's arrest are speaking out on the atrociousness and danger of the new Espionage Act accusations:

The Latest Julian Assange Indictment Is an Assault on Press Freedom

Scandal: Trump is first President to indict press for espionage

What Assange charges could mean for press freedom

WikiLeaks founder indicted on Espionage Act charges, raising issue of press freedoms

‘Frightening’: Charges Against Julian Assange Alarm Press Advocates

Rachel Maddow - Donald Trump Administration Attacks First Amendment With Assange Charges

And so are many press freedom and rights groups:

ACLU Comment On Julian Assange Indictment

The charges against Julian Assange are a threat to press freedom

The new charges also make it less likely that Assange will be extradited to the US. So, I wonder why they were revealed now.

And I don't think UK should either.

He's not a UK citizen...

What he did is most certainly espionage, and when it's said that he 'got people killed', that means random people that may or may not have been involved in activities that could be considered 'US war crimes'.

As in, didn't leak information that resulted in the criminal prosecution of individuals perpetrating war crimes, he leaked information that resulted in the deaths of individuals unrelated to the specific crimes in his leaks.

Same with Snowden and Manning and others.

These people may have had some good motives, but they are not heros and they absolutely do rise to the level of having had committed espionage against the United States, at a minimum, and could be considered terrorists, given the results of their leaks.

As another veteran, I'd volunteer for the firing squad. I'm quite unfond of individuals that purport to be 'whistleblowers' yet are looser themselves with the information they have stolen than the individuals they claim to have proof of committing crimes are with the laws that the 'whistleblower' claims have been broken.

BS he didn't want to drop those charges and take flack for it unless he could act on them. We didn't pressure and force him into an embassy for 7 years to get him on half-assed rape charges. Obama kicking the can on consequences is SOP.

The whole point behind releasing information is that people are supposed to be loose / open with the truth and that the public deserves to know the truth. People shouldn't be loose with laws and actions that involve illegal invasions, mass-killing of people, destruction of countries, etc.

You have entirely ignored the point.

These people dumped information. While some of it could construe actions that may be considered to be criminal, other parts absolutely cost the lives of people unrelated to the overall point that they were trying to make.

There are a lot of ways to describe that type of action, but 'justice' is not one of them.

So after Assange is jailed for being a journalist, are we going to thump our chest and yell freedom, while cursing/mocking country xxxxx ( China Russia whatever)?
The answer is of course !
There will be some pretzel explanation about how different we are.. and some more thumps and mockery.

You dont like him because of why?

Would you be happier having no knowledge of the complete and utter disregard for human rights, liberty, and life from governments around the world especially the oh so perfect US govt.?

I guess if you hate learning how evil the government is then yes, let's behead the messenger who warned us of despotism.

If you actually lived in a country that was as bad as what you accuse the US of being, you wouldn't have anything bad to say about the US at all.

1. He is an ahole who dumped a bunch of classified documents without following any of the best practices when it comes to parsing and disseminating such information as a news agency to insure you don't accidentally get someone killed, that is manslaughter by the way if you do (get someone killed), and negligence even if you don't.

2. IF it took wikileaks for you or others to have you eyes opened on just how much of a mess the geopolitical world is, and the bad things that happen in it, your an idiot give your head a shake and wake up to reality instead of your pink unicorn room.

3. The threat of despotism has always and always will exist, it is why you have the second amendment, it is why most of the western world is some form of democracy with built in protections for minorities.

That good enough for you? (probably not)

Because that's how they treated Chelsea Manning?

I don't think they need to make anything up. I think they have proof. I think they have proof because I know that classified information was divulged. I know someone had to have done it. I am reasonably certain that their is a very good chance that enough digital forensic evidence was left behind to prove it.

Everything the US Government has done, going after Wikileaks, (so by default, Jullian Assange himself), also allows them to go back after Manning as well, if there are new charges outside of what Manning has already been tried for. Anything additional remains on the table. These actions by the US Government suggest that they have Assange by the balls.

Or it could be something completely different. I like a conspiracy theory I heard a while back. The charges have nothing to do with prosecuting Assange but are only a tool to get him into the United States through extradition. That Assange is wanted so he can spill the beans on some secrets he's been holding out on or at least provide proof for some.

Truth be told, considering everything we've seen over the last several years, that's not really a far fetched conspiracy theory.

So let me educate you guys.

Assange is arrested and being tried not for publishing anything, not for anything to do with the wars around the globe like you guys keep talking about, but for illegally obtaining or attempting to illegally obtained information related to the United States NATIONAL DEFENSE.

ASSANGE WAS NEVER ON OUR SIDE.

Normal journalism stuff. And nothing new.

"Transmitting", as the video you posted puts it, classified information to people after it's been leaked isn't a crime. That's what the USSC case concerning the Pentagon Papers was about.

Getting sources to leak classified information is what journalists do all the time, as some of them have openly said in the wake of the indictments against Assange.

Its terrible...
We have been eroding freedoms at break neck speeds.
But sure, there's worse places.. there will ALWAYS be worse places.
Must people can't help but think in the framework of our own propaganda.
Then we act as if our own liberty eroding actions are some high minded actions of righteous men... Do we honestly believe the people in power in the countries we castigate for ' not protecting freedom' don't think of themselves as righteous and acting in a proper way for their country. A lot of those countries are or historically have been poorer and plague with unrest... How do we rank for freedom against our real counterparts, countries that have and are rich for a sustained period of time.?

All of that doesn't change the fact that Wikileaks clearly targeted the governments it wanted to take down, while sparing the ones it was getting support and intel from. I hear everything you're saying but it doesn't make Assange a hero because he didn't do what was truly right (and would have gotten him assassinated). Sooner or later we're going to find out he's got skeletons in his closet too, or just that he cared so much about shedding the light on western powers he was willing to sign a deal with the devil to do it.

Supporting Assange is like supporting A disease. sure, it might be nice to have the disease reveal the flaws in your health care system, or have it kill your enemies, but it's still a disease and will kill you if you are not careful with it.

This guy isn't some Icon of Freedom and equality, he's an arrogant little prick who did good by accident.

WHY DO YOU THINK HE IS?

I am actually quite amazed that he is a "hero" around here... He is a greasy slob who smeared shit on walls and raped women... I'm sure he could write a compelling piece of journalism..

No, Assange didn't rape any woman. No, Assange didn't smear feces on the Ecuadorian embassy walls - that was a made-up story meant to demonize Assange and to use as an excuse for expelling him.

Assange's lawyer has denied that claim, saying it's "not true", and Assange was under 24/7 video surveillance in all rooms in the embassy so they could produce proof, just like they showed footage of Assange riding a skateboard in the embassy, if it were true.

One of the Ecuadorian embassy's former workers has said of Assange and the allegations against him:

I was in the Embassy for six years, and Assange spent there nearly 2,500 days. I witnessed myself how respectful was [the attitude] of all diplomats, of all administrative staff towards him and [vice versa], of him towards us.

And:

You have to attack and defame the personality if you don’t want the public opinion to support the brave one who challenged the most powerful nation on the planet.

And the former president of Ecuador has said of the current president who expelled Assange that he is corrupt and Ecuador's greatest traitor for handing Assange to the US. Ecuador's former foreign minister has called the handing over of Assange savagery, lawless, and staged.

The former Ecuadorian president, the former Ecuadorian foreign minister, and the former Ecuadorian embassy worker dealt with Assange for 6 of the 7 years that Assange was in the embassy. They know exactly what kind of guest Assange was. If they all say Assange was a model guest, and if Assange's lawyer denies the smear stories against Assange, and if the Ecuador's current president can't produce any footage backing up his claim despite there being 24/7 video surveillance of Assange, then it stands to reason that the smear story is a load of BS.

The real reason Assange was expelled was to curry favour with the US and secure a loan:

On February 21, Ecuador signed a deal securing the controversial IMF loan for a total of $4.2 billion, in addition to another $6 billion from other U.S.-dominated financial institutions like the World Bank, for a total of $10.2 billion

The smear story is just that.

Its a little sad most can't see past the propaganda strategy deployed and how it works on their own thought process.
Going 'blah screw Assange he's an a hole' its exactly where they need (and have!) the public in general... Just so when your rights are eroded you don't even notice... In fact you might be happy!!. I mean Asshole in jail... Justice!!! Yiiipee!.
This is no different than in countries we routinely castigate as less than free and less than humanitarian.
We can't help but say, 'state-run ' media, for whatever country we are quoting and don't like at the moment.. but what is ours if not state beholden... And each time one outlet tests the limits, the msm falls in line, and out goes the ax like clockwork... And people cheer!!.. yay! Asshole!!!

This post is the very thing which is wrong regarding much of the hate towards Assange. I've seen way too many posts in too many threads about Assange which assert he's a rapist despite no trial and the fact that events surrounding these alleged rapes are quite questionable. Keep in mind that one of the women who initially came forward with an accusation walked back her story and told of how she was greatly pressured into making the accusation and for charges to be pressed against him.

Also don't forget that what the US government has charged him with is all alleged. There has been no trial and no guilt found and yet so many people are acting as if the charges themselves prove guilt. I personally find this all disgusting. It also makes it impossible to have any sort of debate or conversation because the people claiming him guilty without trial or proof are the equivalent of the person yelling something over and over and as loud as possible as if doing so makes what they say is true.

I definitely don't think of Assange as some sort of hero. You're never going to find me calling him some sort of patriot or wonderful guy. I'm willing to be he's a pretentious asshole. I also have no doubt he has doesn't have pure as the driven snow intentions regarding the publishing of information he has released. People aren't completely selfless and he's no different.

He's not more or less a hero than 'professional' journalists. Everything he was guilty of wrt data you can find in the MSM. the rape charge has been recanted by the so called victim and sounds more like a payment dispute.

The people who did anything wrong wrt Wikileaks are the leakers. Assaunge is not a use citizen. Did not take any vows to guard the info (unlike some of the leakers). Not bound by US law. Was not in US jurisdiction.

Anyone on US soil has the same protection, and liabilities under the law. Once he is here, they can do what they want. The fact that the crimes were not committed here is not much of an impediment.

I think the guy is an asshole not worth the spectacle we are putting on. As far as making an example of him, they sort of already have. The last few years have not been kind to him.

Don't you think it's a bit strange how anybody who challenges the powers that be is miraculously a rapist?
