I'll wait for the reviews to come out for the AIB's to make sure there aren't any quirks with them. But I've been happy with my FE 2070, the only slight issue I have with it is that you can't lower the fan speed lower than 41% without modding the BIOS.

Something to keep in mind on the 3000 series FE's.

in the digital foundry video his system seemed to be powered on and the GPU fan was not spinning. Maybe they only work when under load?

The rumors suggested that big navi would be a jump over the 2080ti, so people talking about the 3080 being a 70% jump over a 2080 muddles the comparisons of big navi maybe being 30% faster than a 2080ti or more. Which is about where the 3080 seems to be winding up.

I have a GTX 1080 that does this, wouldn't surprise me.

If you doubled 5700 XT. It's performance would be similar to 3080, but it would consume 450 watts, so you would need to back off on the performance to keep power in line.

As far as density. Kopite7kimi says GA102 is 627mm2 and NVidia says it has 28 Billion Transistors.

That is 45 Million Transistors/mm2

Navi is 10.3B/251mm2 = 41 Million Transistors/mm2, so GA102 is more dense.

Except performance per watt will increase so it won't consume anywhere near 450 watts. They won't need to cut back on performance because of that.

As for transistor count, we'll have to see what AMD's count is when the final tally comes. I was still under the impression that tsmc's process was more advanced and that allows for some advantages. But I guess it's possible it might not be as dense.

Also, compared to the 3090, the 3080 has a 17% reduction in cuda cores, and corresponding reductions in other performance outputs, big navi ought to be the sku with the full chip to bring to bare in that price range. And I suspect the clocks will get higher on tsmc, but again, we'll see.

I noticed that too... Hopefully it's a feature. I am noise sensitive :D on the desktop.
 
Am trying my luck on Craigslist for my 2080 Ti. Even at a steal of a price, it's tough to beat Nvidia's PR right now. Hopefully some level of scarcity of the new cards will bring things back to reality if I can't offload it. I figure I'll put my entire family on 3090 pre-buy alert. In my area, all the other Cragislist 2080 Ti cards are asking for pretty close to retail. Even the ones that went up after mine. Seems ballsy, but I guess I'll see.

Gonna wait for all the 3080/3070 top sell out and be no availability for a long time, then I will sell mine. :)

That's good, then they probably changed it. For my 2070 FE , the fans always spin, no matter the load, the lowest is 41%

lol I'm saying $300 because I think the 3060 will also match it using DLSS 2.0 at $350.
And with all of the new tech, probably a few exclusive to or run faster on the 3000 series, I don't see why you would want a 2080Ti.

GTX 1070 - $390 for an EVGA SC Black
RTX 2070 - $550 for an EVGA XC Ultra (or whatever the hell I have in my PC)

Those were the costs of my last few GPUs. The RTX 3070 will be around $550 if the past two generations are anything to go buy. Maybe we'll be lucky to get an EVGA at $510.

**70s should be around ~$400, give or take. But yes prices are climbing and unless AMD gets something out that sufficiently competes on time and in volume we'll continue seeing these prices. I like the Nvidia features so probably will go with Nvidia regardless of what AMD brings out, but I do hope AMD gets some new cards out soon and start offering counterparts to DLSS 2.0 and the like.
 
Hmm... 2 x Titan Xp's drawing up to 250W each atm.... replace them with 1 x 3090 at 350W....

Then use the hell out of those CUDA cores!

Sounds good in my head like that anyway. :p

41% more die area for 41% more cost 1070 -> 2070. It’s not like they jacked prices for no reason.

I am interested in the 3xxx transistor count and die area. The arch changes too. Ampere is an interesting beast. I hope they put out a white paper like they did for Turing.

I'm going to speculate that a 3070Ti/S will be nipping at the heels of the 3080 performance-wise, and be about $100 less.

Regardless, I'm still waiting for AMDs next-gen to be released, because it may play a factor in tailoring price drops across the board for everyone.

We shall see.
 
Yeah, I am seeing some folks on youtube going crazy, saying AMD is being or going to be crushed by Nvidia. :D Then there are the sane voices that are saying we need to wait and get our hands on the cards to see what they can accomplish. Honestly, between the new consoles coming and AMD releasing new cards, it appears Nvidia is feeling the pricing heat and priced their cards more realistically and with probably far better performance, this time around.

TLDR: Competition is good! :)

Personally, considering how often you work with new hardware, it is rather surprising you have not upgraded your gaming system already.

Was going to jump on a 2700X and 1080Ti, then held off.

Was going to jump on a 3700X and 2070S, then held off.

Now, I'm definitely going to jump on a 3700X/4700X and a 3070/3080 variant (or next-gen Radeon if they bring similar performance yet lower pricing) sometime between this Fall and next Spring.

I have a 1440p 144Hz IPS monitor still sitting in the box, and it's high-time that I get the most out of.

Setup my NowInStock email alerts. While they almost always arrive too late, I figure they're a really good clue when sites like Amazon are starting to sell things. As soon as one card in on sale on the big sites, there tends to be a tidal wave within a few hours.

I'm pretty indifferent about the various OEM's this time. MSI and EVGA are brands I like in general, but I'll probably just take whatever I can get.

If the 3060 ends up being a 2080 Ti performance level for $350-$380 then $300 is very reasonable. People should have sold their 2080 Ti's before Nvidia announed the 3000 series.

There is no expectation of that. NVidias own performance slides only show 3070 being about equal to a 2080Ti. Obviously a 3060 will come in significantly below that.
 
I've sold most of my current video cards on/around launch day and I've never had a situation quite like this. The fact that these new powerhouse cards are so much more affordable than the last gen was tough to see coming.

Same. I don't regret buying a 2080ti (I've had it for nearly 2 years), but I really was not expecting to see Nvidia price their new gen the way they did. That combined with the seemingly unprecedented performance jump really crushed the resale value of last gen cards. It's definitely a situation I was not expecting to be in, nor was just about any other 2080ti owner that was looking to sell.

I agree with you but shit they still made Titans over the years and there were people willing to pay those prices... I always questioned who those people were but they're out there.

I'm thinking 3060 = 1080Ti or maybe a bit above...2080Ti IIRC is 25% or so better than 1080Ti, maybe more...I'm thinking at the $349-$399 price range. Techpowerup GPU database says rtx 2060 -> 1080Ti is about 27% uplift.

I agree... nVidia appears to have brought the heat and a little value -- Fingers crossed that AMD at least has 3080 like product though personally I'd love to see AMD product at or top 3090.

The mining craze really messed with our perception of value for money, but with the new consoles launching soon I don't think there was a way for Nvidia to price the new line higher without risking a large number of users simply shrugging and buying a console instead. The price/performance aspect doesn't mean that much if the price is so high that most people simply can't/won't justify the purchase.

I've got a 1080 from 3+ years ago that will likely find a home in a new build for a nephew. Not great for resale, but the general power level of low-end and mid-tier systems is about to get a huge boost I think, and that's pretty exciting.
 
Already planned to sell my 2080Ti to family members for a few hundred so will get what I expect for it. (The only time they get anything new in computer stuff is when I upgrade and sell them my old stuff. ) :)

Why is that a mystery? It’s people that need it for both work and high end gaming. Bring on the CUDA cores.
 
Hm.... does anyone know if the 3090 is going to be limited somehow (ie bus size etc...) on raw performance , both standard and raytraced compared to the 3080 type hardware? I've seen some discussion that the 3090 performance won't be "that much" over the 3080, except in special high-VRAM applications; perhaps not enough to justify that purchasing price. If this is the case, then it especially makes the case for a 3070 Ti and 3080 Ti / Super style card that increases the VRAM somewhat ( 16gb perhaps?) and in the case of the latter gives the vast majority of the performance for the 3090 for significantly cheaper? Then again

If that's what they're doing it would be great if they brought the "Ti" versions out ASAP if they plan to make them at all, rather than having to wait an unspecified amount of time (will it even be this year?). Of course, its possible they won't go this direction at all and could leave it up to AIB partners to offer overclocked and VRAM upgraded versions instead of "formal" Ti / Super types, at least until a refresh a year or more in where there's a die shrink or process improvement giving a minor yet significant benefit as we've seen in the past.

As always, there's really no way for anyone to know anything without reviews and benchmarks. Talking about Ti versions the day after the new line was announced is just silly.
