China is 22 for men and 20 for women. That has nothing to do with the age of consent though and it seems you're conflating the two. Age of consent in China is a startling...14. It gets creepier than that but I won't get into it here.
Oddly enough, their society also puts a great deal of emphasis on people marrying young and spitting out puppies ASAP. If a woman isn't married by 24, many parents begin to get worried. By 28, they begin freaking out. By 30/32, an unmarried woman is considered a 'leftover' in the eyes of many.
Also, pedophilia is not appropriate. A pedo is somebody who is primarily sexually attracted to prepubescent girls. Being attracted to a 14/16/18 year old girl or especially a hologram with the appearance of a 16 year old would not fit that bill.
Actually, the reality is the exact opposite. Poor people have more kids, especially in impoverished countries because mortality rates are higher (not to mention lack of contraceptives and healthcare) and they need the extra help either for work/home. Back in the 18th and 19th centuries, families had more than 2 children for these reasons. Someone needed to farm the land, wash the clothes, help with work.

The idea is to hold him to today's societal standards, given all that humanity has reveled and gleaned from centuries of psychological (and physiologial - hence longer life expectancy) study and discovery...something that society in olden days didnt yet have to hold all those dark age child fuckers to (ignorance is bliss?).

Miku is the most popular Vocaloid singer. Her canon age is 16 from when she was released, it is 16 now, and it will be 16 20 years in the future. I highly doubt that him picking Miku has anything to do with her age and has more to do with the fact that she is the most popular and the most widely used Vocaloid.
I am fairly deep into the Vocaloid universe... personally I prefer IA and Yuzuki Yukari, Miku's voice is just annoyingly high most of the time. Unfortunately most good trance and techno Vocaloid is made with Miku...

Umm... associating with non-human objects and giving it human characteristics is a very human thing. Yes, some people take it to the extreme, but it's no different from the base instincts/behavior that lead people to give their cars/boats names, treating it with love and care, etc.

Umm... Here's a distinctive difference between 1.) wanting to take care of a car/boat that has a tangible money value (and/or even personalizing it by giving it a name to differentiate it from everyone else's to show possessiveness/ownership) and 2.) entering into a marriage with a humanistic hologram of a child cartoon character (and pillows)...so there is a big difference.
What there isn't much of a difference in what this guy is doing: would be someone naming, assigning a childhood age to, and marrying their jackoff tube sock for purposes of both self-sexual gratification and trying to attain a meaningful and intellectual relationship with it, because their mental illness in causing skewed reality and convinced of this.

Since I dealt Anime and the Culture of Japan in the 80's and 90's I can tell you straight on how schizo the entire culture is. I have seen some incredibly terrible things about how so called advanced Japan society is and the results of that type of schizoid culture that has continued to fragment is why you are seeing so many "strange" things coming out of that country.

Does Chuck run to the nearest sporting goods store to buy a volleyball with the intention of marrying it? No.
With still no volleyball companion in sight, he meets Bettina while stopped at an intersection trying to decide which way to go, she gives a sexy smile before driving away, he spots the familiar "angel wings" on the back of her truck...movie ends with him looking down the road she just drove away on (and where he just came from) with a glimmer of hope in his eyes...and it wasn't because there was a Scheels or Dick's that-a-way.

16 is the optimal age for breeding and was typically an age girls were married at in the past in many societies.
I've also met some very intelligent younger girls and that's what I'm looking for, intelligence. Doesn't matter if they are old or young.

Japanese society is very different to what people imagine. It's very insular and it is easy for people to be isolated in the crazy work grind they have. Absolutely by far, hands down the most respectful and safest, best city culture I have ever seen and I've been to over 20 countries. They are very racist, (I was also subjected to it once or twice) which I feel is a good thing as it preserves their culture, plus their unique bloodlines, instead of turning it into some mixed, 70IQ mess with no history, culture or roots, like 'they' are trying to do to Europe and USA. They're trying to import the 3rd world to Japan now though through 'work immigration' and it's just the beginning. I hope Japan maintains it's culture and resists this genocide, just like I hope the same for Europe (which is rapidly disappearing). I don't go to visit other countries to see the same 3rd world immigrants and their fragmented cultures that are spread around the world. I go to see the local culture. Just like people bitched about colonisation in the old days, when it happens to western or asian cultures (lighter-skinned people), no one gives a shit. Funny that bias and double standard, I guess we should all just mass emigrate to Africa, genocide the locals and start another country there, while the invaders destroy what is left of the western countries?

Higher education in both psychology and child developmental psychology are fields that I have years of study and experience in, as well as active participations and presentations in the following:
1. substance abuse counseling, mostly for parents whom have had their children taken away by CPS and are undergoing court ordered treatment plans so that they can be reunited with their children that I have fostered.
2. Foster and adoptive readiness symposiums, where REAL examples of childhood psychological and behavioral disorders (and the causation: adult psychological and behavioral disorders of the biological parents) are discussed with aspiring foster or adoptive parents so that they can be prepared for behavioral outbursts and become licensed...same as I had to do, so I could foster and adopt my children.
So, my "career" in psychology is primarily volunteer work, to benefit both adults and children in an escalated position of need, as required by the Department of Health and Human Services and Judiciary entities of the state that I reside in.

Thinking about it in depth: I have spent more actual time in courtrooms than most people have watched it on episodes of Law and Order (my purpose is to testify on the behalf of both foster children and biological parents, depending on what my involvement is, is what I'm summoned for).

Yes, this man's actions are unusual. Are they illegal? Not in the least bit. Do they indicate something mentally unstable about him? Not necessarily, especially without any of the man's background or mental history. I would chalk this up along the same lines as those that would hold a book in front of them thinking it would stop a .45 caliber bullet. Doing something extreme for the attention. I would not chalk this up as a predilection to pedophilia, at least, not without further supporting evidence. And even if it was a predilection to pedophilia, intent and action are two very different things, and there are many that do not cross the line to action.

Mental illness is not an automatic and instant qualifier for criminal prosecution. Most people with a diagnosed mental illness carry on with life just fine, as they have developed or been taught a coping mechanism.
In my opinion, based on my knowledge and experience of observing somewhat similar behaviors, it may be best that he be subjected to professional mental evaluation, because the signs indicate (to me, at least) that he has some key concerning ingredients that could escalate to a criminal threat.

16 is within the age of consent in Japan and quite a few other countries as well. It's also the age of consent in a great number of US States. So explain how (assuming it's a real person) consensual sex with a person of legal age would be....

I'm not going to throw out my personally identifiable information on the internet by posting my college transcripts, foster care license, and drug counseling/child therapy/foster and adoptive readiness/courtroom attendance docs to appease you. Even if I wanted to, I can't, because that's a violation of my state's laws for protecting the identities of the foster children I have been involved with.
Effigy also means a picture or likeness, so my use there was completely within the definitive range of the word.
You are right: the age of this child cartoon character is within the age of consent in his country, so I will have to change the stance I previously took.
I still question his motives for choosing to enter into a relationship with a cartoon character - particularly a young school-girl looking cartoon character, then him putting forth real effort of collecting body pillows (the physical contact medium) and a hologram (the animated effigy) of, then (and here's the clear indicator of mental illness) becoming so attached and obsessed with them that he proclaims marriage to them.
You can analyze and pick apart my statements as much as you want in an attempt to distract from the fact that you are defending this guy's seriously abnormal behavior (the tune is: "hey everyone, this cartoon character is of legal age where he lives, so his behavior should be considered perfectly normal and acceptable!").

What he/she thought she wanted in life at 16 is way different than what it is at 25 and later. By that point he/she is more settled as to who a good partner would be. So the fundamental definition of the relationship doesn't change once you reach maturity.
There's a reason over 90% of teenage marriages fail.
