Can a post-millennial Spider-Man really be the best ever? And what do you guys think about the new suit?

Gunn hit Twitter to praise both the third Cap movie, which he described as “awesome,” and Holland’s portrayal of Peter Parker. “I think @TomHolland1996 is the best Spidey/Peter Parker ever by a country mile,” wrote the filmmaker, who is currently directing Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. When Gunn was later asked if Holland’s web-slinger was closer to Tobey Maguire or Andrew Garfield’s Parker, the director responded by describing the British actor’s take as “his own thing.

I hope this dude is better. I didn't like Andrew Garfield as Spiderman at all. Too tall, too skinny, personality too cocky. Just wasn't a good fit for Spiderman to me. Was a big let down for me when they canned Tobey.

So this attempt at Spiderman is what, a reboot of a reboot of a reboot? And I seriously can't tell these Marvel movies apart any more, it looks like just another two hours of fanservice and destruction porn, completely indistinguishable from all the others.

Disagree. For the most part I felt that Andrew Garfield was an improvement over Tobey McGuire.
Well look at who you're comparing to. But I always felt the archetype for Peter Parker has been "nerdy" "socially inept" etc... Andrew Garfield didn't seem to exhibit any of those qualities at all.

That said, the character might be good (that has yet to be seen by someone who isn't sucking on the teet of Marvel) but that CGI costume in the trailer... feels bad man.

I think Tobey did a better Peter Parker who was nerdy, but Garfield did a better spider-man who is a wise cracker in the comics.

I think the CGI costume for spider-man looks too cartoonish relative to everyone else. I actually liked the Spider-man costume in the Amazing Spider-man.

How can anyone really say if he will be better or worse based on 2 seconds in a trailer.

Everyone keeps calling that CGI. The only CGI part is the robotic eyes. the rest is a fabric suit.

Tobey McGuire was great for the light-hearted spidey of the early 2000's, but after the abysmal Spiderman 3, EVERYONE INVOLVED NEEDED TO SUFFFER.

Spiderman was always a thin, wiry, nerdy sort, so I was not against Garfield, but the director just fucking missed the godamn point by a parsec and turned him into a living breathing internet troll with abs.

W-w-wait. They're, they're fucking rebooting Spiderman again? Already?

O.M.F.G.L.O.L.

The biggest difference is this is Marvel's Spider-Man. Not some licensed deal that will start off decent and sellout in the sequels (I hope). I liked elements in both Tobey and Garfield's Spider-Man takes, but their sequels really just didn't do them justice.

And to be fair, they aren't rebooting him, he's just a sidekick in the new Captain America movie. I don't think he's getting a reboot for a few more years.

yes and no. Sony still owns the right to use spider-man and anything from his comics in movies. Marvel made a deal to use him in this one movie as he is also an important part of the civil war story line. In agreement for doing so Sony is allowed to make their movie be part of the MCU now and gets the ok to use a few of the avenger characters in their stand alone movie as cameos here or there. So you might end up with 3 minutes of iron man or something like that. While it is being called a co-production between Sony and Marvel, I don't think Marvel gets too much say in the movie.

Stand alone movie comes out next year. So yes they are rebooting him. This is a new spider-man they will introduce him here and then he gets his own stand alone movie.

next year? I thought it wasn't until like 2019 or something.

Okay. Even so, 'next year' is a ways off.

I saw this headline and found myself wondering why the guy from Project Runway was weighing in on superhero movies.

It wasn't just me, right?

Spider Man 5.......................................................Thousand!

Sony gets final say on everything but I expect to see Spidy in Avengers: Infinity War, at least one of the two Infinity War movies. I also wouldn't be surprised to see Spidy characters show up in the Marvel movie at times. Especially people like Osborn or Jameson.

Kinda worried if Sony does have a final say on everything in the Spider-man solo movie, it's not like they've had a great track record the past few movies. So, I'm hoping Marvel has a bit more input in the Spider-man movie direction.

I quite like the new suit, looks like it was ripped right out of the comic. I really dug the eyes at first (similar to how his eyes would change in the comics), but... what is the purpose of them? Tony give his mask animated eyes so his quips would have more impact?

The Marvel Studios folks are working with Sony to come up with ideas and a direction. Hopefully the new management at Sony will make the right choices.

Rumor has it they're lenses. So they probably like Peter scan things or there is some kind of display similar to J.A.R.V.I.S. in the mask.

I'd agree that the costume in the trailer looks terrible.

About Sony's management making right choices, have you see the new ghost buster reboot trailer? i wouldn't have much hope if any on them taking the right choices.

About the suit, anyone that read the civil war comics from a couple years ago could spoil you about Spiderman's "new suit" :D

I entirely agree. Lets just hope this new Spiderman doesn't get an emo haircut and launch into a musical number like Toby did.

Just like the 'clone' Ben Reilly storyline killed my interest in the Spider-man comics, Spider-man 3 killed my interest in the Spider-man movies. So many issues with it. The whole thing reminded me of one of Xena's 'goofy' episodes (singing, overacting, slapstick comedy). But, for me, the most terrible thing about the movie was how they handled Green Goblin. Sure, they dropped the ball on Venom and Sandman too, but the Green Goblin/Harry storyline had been built up over the last two movies and for it to come down to the butler's confession... bah, the less I think about the movie the better.

Anyhow, if Sony's going to borrow one of the Avengers, I'm hoping it's the Hulk. We need a good Hulk vs Spider-man fight - they were always entertaining in the comics.

Eh, Spider Man IS cocky smartass when he dons the suit on and tries to get on the bad guys nerves. Garfield did portray the Spidey really well. It was his Peter Parker role that was lacking but I think that was more on the writing than acting. With Toby the roles were reversed. Ignoring the Spider Man 3 Toby had a perfect Peter Parker role going on, being a bit insecure nerd who is confused by his powers and the responsibility they bring. But his Spidey role was lacking because he was still the same old nerdy Peter Parker, just with a mask on.

I look forward to seeing how this new guy does it. Maybe he can bridge the gap between the two above?

The costume in the trailer does look way out of place. Hopefully its just the lighting in that one scene that's weird.

Anyway, Spider-man is ruined for me regardless. I grew up on the 1967 cartoon (not the comics). In that show Spider-man looked and sounded older, more mature and more confident than the movies. I found that Spider-man interesting and a hero to look up to when I was a child. IMO since 2002 Peter Parker has become an uninteresting, cringe worthy awkward dork that somehow doesn't change as a person, despite gaining incredible power. Alter-ego Spider-man is now a boring, fearless CGI with a 12 year old's sense of humor. I cannot connect to that character, because its not something I aspire to be. A child might look up to his powers, but not his personality.

TL;DR: Spider-brat. Worst Jekyll and Hyde reboot ever.
