While I am glad Mr. Cameron thinks this way, it is a shame a movie has to make over a billion dollars to be exempt from all the crap filler they put on DVDs. People that pirate movies get to watch them immediately. People that legally buy movies get 5 warnings that can’t be skipped, 10 movie trailers and 1 long ass Blu-ray commercial just to get to the menu.

Hence why I usually rip my purchases before I watch them. WDTV Live FTW. Ripping doesn't take much longer than watching all the crap anyway :p

IU rarely watch my dvd's anymore. I rip it all with nothing but the movie and watch it on my Argosy. I had a WDTV live, but I returned it; because it was so buggy. I'm trying out the Argosy 355 at the moment. Still a bit buggy, but you can use an internal hard drive and actually see shares on windows 7 computers.

The piracy warnings and shit ok, whatever. But the 10 min or more of unskipable trailers is just beyond madding.

Ive gotten to do what someone else said. Rip the move just to watch it.

Why are the piracy warnings ok? Anyone viewing it has a 99.9% chance (statistic pulled from my ass) of having bought the content legally, the other .01% obviously do not give a crap.

Nothing should be unskippable in a purchased DVD. It makes pirated material again superior to what the studios are willing to offer, they never learn.

You can still skip straight to the movie on most disc if you spam the stop button for 3+ seconds and then hit play, you should see a code pop up on the players screen when you have hit stop enough times.

People will complain about anything and everything. If they leave them out, people will complain that they don't have trailers anymore and it takes away from the home theater experience. I could give a crap, if I don't like the trailer I just hit the big button on my controller that moves it to the next chapter. Sometimes I'm interested in the trailer and watch it.

You missed the point entirely. It's not about leaving them out vs putting them in, it's about being able to skip them if we so choose.

Yeah trailers are nice, most of the time you can skip that movie by just watching the trailer since hollywood's movies are so shit the trailer's worth more than the movie itself. :D

Commercials are another name for advertisement. Advertising another movie is a commercial. Advertising how good Blu-ray is compare to this DVD you brought is a commercial. Those little skit you sometimes see that compares piracy to stealing ("You wouldn't steal a car?") is a commercial.

Ya know what I really hate is unskippable trailers on a dvd. I fast forward without watching them just out of stubbornness. I don't understand the logic behind putting ads on a movie you payed for. It makes me want to torrent the movie and just throw the dvd away. On another note I really hate those upgrade to blue ray commercials... "upgrade to blue ray and you will get xray vision AND your penis will grow 3 inches." I just can't wait for the 3d blue ray commercials... "upgrade to 3d blue ray and you will get xray vision, your penis will grow 6 inches AND you will get a lifetime supply of beer and hookers."

There are some DVDs that force you to watch all those stupid bullshit warning screens and trailers and so on without the option of skipping or fast forwarding it, it is so annoying.

I look at it this way - yea, it sucks, so I'll just use those notifications to tell me when I have to finish popping my popcorn, making my drinks, and using the can.

I really like having trailers before the movie. It reminds me of sitting in the theater and seeing new trailers (since I almost never go to the theater anymore). I also get to see trailers for movies I had no clue about. Happened last night when I watched The Hurt Locker.

However, I do indeed fucking hate it when you can't skip any of it. VHS advantage on that one I suppose.

To use this as an argument for pirating is still pretty weak.

I really wouldn't mind forced trailers and commercials on rented DVD's. However, if I buy a movie and watch it several years from now, I don't want to be forced to watch trailers for movies that are years old. Totally retarded.

I've found that the "Root Menu" or "Menu" button on nearly ALL of my DVD's skips straight to the movie's selection screen where I can play, configure, select a scene, etc.

In the few cases it doesn't work, yes it's very frustrating.

A while ago when people started complaining about unskipable ads in DVD's, I had a friend show me because I didnt believe it.

    F'ing ridiculous.

If we are talking legit, $1.00 or less on-demand type movies FTW. Just because the movie industry is going thu these changes kicking and screaming, it is unavoidable. Just look at what redbox is doing/did to DVD rental stores. I know at least 3 in my area that closed due to them.

yep... bought a bunch of BRDs over the last month, you know, trying to do the right thing and all and buy legal legit copies of the I want hard copies off in HD format.. and wow, it's down right offensive the crap you have to sit through to get to the movie... it's funny though, a lot of my HD DVDs go right to the movie.. which is nice. too bad those are collectors items now. ;) It's almost as if they want to piss us off and encourage us to torrent flicks..

You'd think the more money a movie made, the more advertisements they'd want to attach to it.

I love the blu-ray ads that try to show you the improved quality:

    1. If it's on a normal DVD, there's no difference in the picture quality on the ad itself. It's still on a standard definition dvd. Hence, you cannot show me the improved quality blu-ray offers.

    2. If it's on a blu-ray, I obviously already know the difference.

Thus, there is no point to Blu-ray ads that show you the improved quality.

OK, who else thinks it's only a matter of time before they start putting ads in the middle of movies? Kinda like how Hulu does it but it'll be on stuff you actually paid money for.

Product placement has been around for quite some time.
I'm talking about full on commercial. Say you're watching Transformers on Blu-Ray or whatever and 50 minutes into the movie a Tampon commercial starts inturrupting the GM commercial that is the movie.

Are you saying that women do not have the right to know what products are available to them when they bleed? Have you no love for the opposite gender?! You bigot!

I just do something else like prepare food while all that stuff goes on, by the time my movie is ready, I'm done and ready for some entertainment.

But honestly, my TV habits have gone from watching movies to watching complete seasons of really good shows. I find that to be better than the vast majority of movies that have come out lately, I think it's directly related to the fact that the people who make these TV shows have so many people depending on that constant check that they NEED to be profitable and have more motivation to make a good product.

I realize that isn't true of all cases, but generally, lately the trend has been better TV and less good movies for the last few years.

Wonder if anyone agrees with that?
