It's so true, female video game characters are so crappy in general

Equal in some ways. Different in others such as physically where they are generally smaller and weaker. Some may argue men are better at math/science while women are better are language/arts.
Some would be ignoring a whole lot of history and teaching practice in making that generalization.

Also, I agree with an earlier post in that Alyx Vance is my favorite VG representation of a woman. Liara from ME1 was good too, though they took her off the deep end a little in ME2. Bastilla in KOTOR was pretty good... back in the days before Bioware had the graphics capabilities to sex up their females to the extreme.

There is tons of valid points in here.

To me, if the women knows how to take care of her fellow men AND women, that does not use their looks and parts to her advantage, is generally a good person who can take a joke, can take things serious but also knows how and when to relax, and to be quite blunt is able to keep up to her fellow men/women in opinion, and intelect, then I agree I am all for women.

They know they look good(alot of them) they like to be pretty and prance about(thats fine) but I have a HUGE problem with anyone being treated better or differently cause they are of a different gender, or things they do or dont get excused because of that.

If I dont have a chest and have to work my butt off, why should she be any different? If we as men have to give it all and make do getting little in return, that we as men have to rely on our own 2 hands, why should women in general get a pass on simple things like doing her job which she is paid for, such as taking out the garbage or doing dishes so she stays pretty(I have worked in many restaurants, women tend to be the laziest because men HAVE to do most of the work), screw that. If she is physically incapable of lifting a stack of dishes, damn right I will help, but do we not all just get paid for our tasks, why do we also have to do her tasks when she is paid the same and we have to walk on eggshells because of womens lip srry I meant lib.

If she works for it like we do, by all means. I am an equal opportunity individual who firmly believes in a higher power, and do like to be a nice guy and helpfull to who I can, where I can, but only if its returned to me. Act like the stereotypical ass and you get treated like one, act like the average female seems to, then I treat the same. Act like a man just trying to live the way you can, or a women actually trying to be helpfull, not because of looks, age, inteliigence or such, then you are an A++ person in my books.

Thats all I am saying, equal opportunity for those that should have such, man or women, if your hired to do a job, but cannot do it, because you dont want to, well you shouldn`t have a job, if you cannot do certain things thats different, we are supposed to help each other :)

Honestly from your posts I can only conclude you are rather clueless yourself and know very few women. I feel I can say with confidence all 3 of my sisters and my Mum sound more intelligent and clued in to reality than you appear to be. One is in a management role at a major retailer, in charge of managing the store managers for the country, earning a pretty decent wage in the process. One is a primary school teacher who is good at her job and well respected to the point she has represented the state in international teaching thingos in various countries, while still teaching a class of her own. The other is a bit of a job jumper and has worked in accounting at various places and is currently trading to make money, she's also a car enthusiast and would be able to tell you more about cars than most guys and has owned classic cars and sports cars most her life. My Mum is a flat out genius, and I don't just say that because she's my Mum, she's academically brilliant and is one of those people you can talk to about on any topic from chemistry to religion to raising kids to physics to counselling to engineering, because she's very insightful and learns things faster than most.

Don't mistake not being interested in the same things as you as being clueless or lacking intellect. My sisters drove me mad with the crap they used to watch on TV while growing up and they still watch those types of shows. But you'd be a fool to call any of them clueless or lacking intellect because of those reasons, even when they were younger and I was at their throats for not letting me watch TV that wasn't shit (I was the youngest) :p Oh, they're all heavy facebook users too :)

The sisters are 3 very different women with very different strengths who watch TV that I think is absolute shit. You could call them many things.... many insulting things (and believe me, I have :D).... clueless is not one of them.

are you saying that men not caring or noticing name brand accessories is misogynistic or are you saying that men thinking the purpose of women's attire is to attract a man is misogynistic .....
I didn't say anything about it really. Since you asked though, doesn't it occur to you that a lot of men pay attention to those things also? Doesn't it occur to you that if someone is preoccupied with material things, it's not a reflection of an innate quality of their gender but of that specific person's personality? If you think you see that type of personality more in women, you are mistaken because that's not the reality. That's your biases showing you what you want to see.

Disliking a type of woman isn't misogynistic in the slightest.
 That's exactly what it is! Would you say you dislike "types" of black people? You're stereotyping a gender and then finding reasons to hate members of it.
I dislike Housewife watching, TMZ reading, Facebook stalking, Credit Card debit building, clueless women. This type happens to be most of what I run into. Give me a woman who gives a shit about the world beyond the Kony video they watched; one who has a real job, real hobbies, real intellect, and passion and you have Me as a fan.
You're like a case study of male chauvinism. It's fascinating.
While Religion has infused our culture I am an atheist who lives rather outside of cultural norms so religion has little to no impact on my ideology.
However far outside cultural norms you may live today, you've still been heavily influenced by the last few thousand years of human cultural history and its patriarchal structure. None of us lives in a vacuum.

Disliking a type of woman is normal. Disliking or disrespecting women as a sex is misogynistic. It isn't necessarily misogynistic to depict physically attractive women, but the preponderance of doing such does point towards a disrespect of women and a miscalculation of women themselves. We all know men that place too high of value on the appearance of the female "creature."

No, its not. The gender distinction shouldn't be made. It's unneeded, and is misogynistic. If you dislike a type of person or personality, say that instead.

Yes, which is what you'd be doing by lumping women (or men) into "types" based solely on gender identity.

So far, every game i've played lately, the main male characters are steroidal, but the background male characters are still ripped. On the other hand, female background characters tend to be flat chested and no ass, usually tho, there rarely are female background characters, mostly guys with big pecs to make them bigger targets. Those sexist bastards!

That was a bit over the top. But seriously, if this was equal opportunity, i should be able to shoot more sexy women. Maybe if there are enough women spread out in the game like they do with the men, the critics wouldn't focus so much on that one female.

Hell, lets make an Indiana Jones game and make *ALL* his enemies super models in nazi suits. I'm serious. Really.

Men and women are not the same. Your idealism has taken you to a certain level of dishonesty.

I don't like female astronauts because their menstrual fluids can mess everything up in a zero gravity environment.

Same goes for male characters. They are hyper-masculinised and simplistic, generally. Some exceptions, as with female ones.

It's a case of suspension of disbelief. It's not ideal but it's definitely not confined to female roles.

That's a touchy subject since its more about control than appearance. Such can occur even when a woman is extremely modest.
I tend to have more of a problem resisting rapeurges on women who are all covered up. Gets me curious. WHAT'S UNDER THERE?

It all boils down to testosterone. If you have plenty for the males, then the game is good. If the women aren't saturated with estrogen, but have a healthy feminine balance of est/test then we are all good.

I don't like female astronauts because their menstrual fluids can mess everything up in a zero gravity environment.
Femshep doesn't have that problem, so I must modify that statement to say that some female astronauts are ok. :D

Of course they aren't the same, but the biological differences between the genders should not relegate women to a subordinate position within society. When you generalize "types" of women, you reinforce that idea and that's wrong. This is why I suggested you talk about personalities and leave the gender qualifier out of it. The equality that men and women should have comes with the equal opportunity to be fickle, materialistic, dishonest or have any number of other negative personality traits because both genders are equally human.

Exactly why it is OK for women (and men) to be portrayed however they choose in media. Including games.

Feminists don't want to allow men to be shallow, which seems contrary to their beliefs if everything is treated as analogous.

you sound completely insane. Using your 3 sisters as examples of upstanding women is just as generalized and bias as me using the majority of women I know are clueless.

I was hoping you'd have some validity but your just insane.

Feminists want more power than men, but disguise it with "equality." WA State is an example of where men have lost this battle for equality.

Err...I guess it's one thing to disagree, but I can't for the life of me find anything "insane" in his post.

Just as a funny side note...male fruit flies, when rejected by females, turn to alchohol to drown their sorrows just like we do. Perhaps the females truly are more evolved. ;)

I live in WA, just keep your wife chained up out of site and there will be no problems. Can't divorce you if she can't unlock her cage.

Well men and women are changing roles in society which is also changing our genetic "norms"

Generally men are far better linear thinkers and better at focused tasks, women are generally much better at abstract and multi-focused. Though there are times where some women are better with landmarks then directions and such. Things are changing, but there are "norms" there have been for a VERY long time, genetics has alot to do with this, though you do see female body builders or even ones that are very linear thinkers, but this is not a norm :)

Well...

Due to the physical size difference and child birth removing the ability for women to advance because they were stuck with a kid they were held back. Women however are more than gaining ground when it comes to education and advances. They are kicking the crap out of us now.

Turns out when you don't burden them with kids and physical dominance women kick our asses. Male dominance is on the decline in the western worlds. So is white dominance as when bigotry and racism is removed minorities do just as fine and often better.

Part of the reason for the entire conservative freak out. Nothing wrong with women, unless you are part of the American Taliban aka conservative.

LOL, I sound completely insane for using an example of real people to demonstrate how interest in certain TV shows and facebook in no way makes them clueless or lacking intellect?

One (and not the only) point in my post was that I highly doubt you actually "know" women. You say that the majority of women you know are clueless and lack intellect, yet you use shallow arguments like TV shows and facebook, demonstrating the lack of any depth in your own thinking.

Yeah, sure, there are clueless women around, bitches who too stupid to realise they don't know anything and incapable of taking advice from people who do actually know something. But that applies just as equally to men and if the majority of women you know are clueless, chances are all the males in your area are as well, it'd be an oddity for a bunch of clueless women to congregate in one place without a bunch of clueless men to go with them.

Ok, but that's an unimportant difference in the modern era. We can pick up heavier weights (sometimes) than women. Big deal.

Which would be bullshit.
You sure? Average math SAT scores by gender shows a pretty substantial gap. Whether that's actually related to intelligence/capabilities of each gender or high schoolers are, on average, conforming to "boys are better at math, girls are better at language" isn't clear. The end result is the same, though: boys appear to, generally, be more proficient at math.

You mean welcome to an Islamic state.
I see girls that look 12 years old dressing like whores. I would not be surprised if their chance of being raped or having someone force themselves upon them is higher than someone who dresses modestly.

Wow...

welcome back to the dark ages everyone!

It's the kind of disgusting viewpoint that inevitably gets posted in a thread on this topic and I sensed he was about to go there.

Taken at face value, that statistic could be compelling. However, the gender gap in math scores disappears when comparing ACT scores in states where student participation is mandatory. Meaning the gap we see in SAT scores is representing a sampling bias, because significantly more college bound females take the SAT than males which lowers their mean gender score. The SAT data does not represent some innate higher capability for mathematics in males.
