If you remember the old arcade days and spent a lot of time there then you're bound to be excited about the release of Donkey Kong on the Nintendo Switch. Take my PC Master Race card from me, but I loved the arcades and the fact that Nintendo is making an official release of Donkey Kong for the Switch is giving me wood. This may make me drop some coin for a Switch so I can get my Kong on.

Or you could just run it on an emulator...

Guys, guys... It's clear to me that he needs BOTH!!! Grab that switch, AND set up MAME. It's the only way.

This may not be a popular opinion, but...$8 still seems like way too much for this.

It says "complete arcade version" which would be awesome. If its the original NES version, then its garbage. I LOVE original Donkey Kong. I built a MAME cabinet just so I could play the arcade version whenever I wanted. I went on a DK binge after watching King of Kong - Fist Full of Quarters.

Donkey Kong is ok. Not my favorite, but not bad.

I was more into Robotron, Mario Bros, Defender, Zaxxon, Black Tiger, Galaga, Congo Bongo, Up n Down, Turbo, etc. in the '80s.

Almost forgot Dig Dug, Mr. Do, Mr. Do's Castle. :D Those were fun too!

I hear ya bro.
I played the hell outta all those games you listed except, Black Tiger, and Up n Down....

The thing I'm the most surprised is, that of all the old timers here (like me) is ... no mention of TEMPEST!!!
I stunk at it ... but I still wasted my pounds/kilos.. whatever... of quarters on that puppy.

Tempest was good too! I like almost any vector games. Tempest, Astreroids, Omega Race, Lunar Lander, Battle Zone, etc. I've always like that aesthetic. There was supposed to be a new vector game a while back, maybe something like Vektropolis or something like that anyway. It looked like it would be amazing, and then it just fell off the world.

I like a lot of the more obscure games too (mostly Japanese), but didn't play a lot of them until I started collecting for MAME. (which I've been doing since 1995 :D ) Mappy, Momoko 120%, among a ton of other ones. Also a lot of old shooters like Air Buster, R-Type, etc.

Edit:

Apparently it was cancelled over "creative differences" which sucks. Here's a link:

I'm good...

It's not exactly portable though, but it is authentic :)

I will have to take some pictures of my friend's arcade setup in his basement. He has a few cabinets with emulators and classic types of controls. He has a TMNT Cabinet with controls, a Donkey Kong, and a Spy Hunter I believe.

I'm always on the lookout for a decent defender cabinet as well as Bump 'n Jump. Bump 'n Jump isn't a remarkable game, I just dumped lots of quarters into it growing up while the rest of my family was waiting to get into a buffet at a casino. It's a fun game.

Elevator Action and Rampage were two other classics I loved. And R-Type - what a frustrating game.

The only other cabinet I have (other than the Donkey Kong) is Truxton - it's another vertical scroller (shoot everything, don't get hit) that hardly anyone knew about. I played the heck out of it in college - basement of the student union building. I still haven't beaten it :p

I do have one pinball - High Speed - got it for a steal out of Craigs List. I wish I would have collected more pinballs 10 years ago when they were about half the price they are going today :(

This one was built by a friend of mine. There are other "Arkegs" out there, but this is his. Keeps a cold keg in the bottom, and dispenses beer whilst you play.

Truxton! I haven't seen or played that one for years. I loved the skull bombs. :D I don't think I made it very far on this one. I did ok on Raiden though, but never finished it.

Elevator Action is my all-time favourite. Being able to use your environment against the enemy agents was so much more interactive than any other contemporary game. Bump'n'jump and Lady Bug were my other go-to's at the arcade as the more popular games were always packed three-deep.

haha, no.
I found that most NEO-GEO games like metal slug to be far harder. But they do start out easy.

I've only played Metal Slug on emulation, so plenty of "quarters" available. :D The only SNK games I played in the arcade were Cyber Lip, Magician Lord, and one of the Samurai Showdown games. (can't remember which one) IV is my favorite, but I'm reasonably sure that wasn't the one I played in a real arcade.

Later on Street Fighter Champion Edition was always like this, so I always hit the Final Fight machine instead. A friend of mine had and upright Lady Bug machine.

My favorites were Gauntlet, Super Off-Road, Dig Dug, Spy Hunter, and Virtua Cop

I remember seeing the original Virtua Fighter for the first time from the window of a closed school arcade. My friends and I were plastered to the window for who knows how long watching the attract mode. :D

Virtua Cop is the one i liked, although I did play some Virtua Fighter

Of all the games that I've heard about convincing someone to buy an entire console. Donkey Kong classic may actually be the dumbest.

...or, you could just come to an arcade (or the American Classic Arcade Museum as shown in the photo) and play the game in the form in which it was intended. :)

There was a guy I want to say in Virginia that collected Arcades and fixed them up. Every year he would have a special event where anyone could come and play all the games. He did it through the local BSA troupe and asked for donations for his son who had a pretty rare disease. Interestingly enough he also teamed up with the people that made the movie Chasing Ghosts: Beyond the Arcade. We went 2 years in a row and got to see the movie before it officially came out. Sadly I cannot find any information on it now.

I've got a decent arcade a few blocks from my house. It's called "The 8 Bit". They serve good beer, pizza, have a metric ton of games and pinball machines, are good about rotating things in and out, etc. It's one of the better modern ones that I've been to. I don't go there that often because I have everything I could possibly want in my house with whiskey, cigars, nice arcade stick setup, 65" TV to play the games on, and a lot of other nice comforts. However, it's one of the few such places I will hit up once in a while, just because I like what they're doing. It's also fun to take my kids down to play some pinball here and there.

I play Metal Slug on a consolelized NEO-GEO MVS with a 161in1 cart and free play switch. My controller has real has real happ switches too.

My favorites were the vector games too. Battlezone, Red Baron and of course Omega Race. Just purchase a 60-1 multicade for my house from Craigslist. Nothing like playing the classics in an arcade cabinet with buttons that can stand up to the action.

Nice! Yeah, I buy all Happ/Suzo parts when I build controllers. Recently sold off my last one though, and ended up buying a Tank Stick setup from X-Arcade because it was cheaper and less time consuming than doing another build. It's not a bad setup for the price. The Happ competition sticks (like the Street Fighter cabinets had) are my favorites.

Do you have Gunlord for your NG setup? That's one game I'd REALLY love to get my hands on.

Black Tiger and Kid Niki swallowed some quarters for sure.

Played this on MAME the other evening on PC, with an arcade stick. Not going to address the fuckery. Oh wait...

Donkey Kong Jr. was a much more entertaining game but the original started the whole Mario deal and has more of a cachet.
