Issue with Spaces

On my old mac mini, I had an issue where certain applications would open to their correct space, but clicking on the application in the dock or opening a relevant document did not cause the space to automatically switch.
With my new computer, I transfered everything using the transfer assistant doohickey, so I have the exact same problem.
