Probably but your application is... well... not good.
Drop a bee-bee sized ball in the middle and let the mounting procedure do the spreading. (to avoid air bubbles and uneven application)

If you really want to spread it, put your finger in a plastic bag and spread it around that way so no finger oils get on. If you spread it yourself it should be thin BUT you should really not be seeing that much metal showing through. most of the time i just let the application of the heatsink to the CPu do the spreading though, as already mentioned as I haven't found any noticeable differences between the two.
