Is there anyway to run Modern Warfare 2 without Steam? I'm tired of Steam. I stop playing HL 2 stuff long ago because I was tired of waiting on Steam. It's just like GFWL.

MP? Steam only. Heck, you cannot even install without steam, as a few files are not present on the DVD, and need to come from Steam

I got owned by steam just after moving and purchasing MW2. I didn't have internet for like 2 weeks, there is a way to install it, google it. don't even try to get multiplayer to work.

Piracy is illegal.:D

tell me about it when my Crysis Warhead can't even play now due to 3 install limit.

and I have to use a fucking crack to make it work and I can't even use 1.1 patch due to retarded piracy check.

illegal? I find more funny why illegal version is better than legal copy...

its a 5 install limit and all you have to do is give EA a call and they will reset it. yeah its stupid but its pretty painless so theres no need to be so dramatic.

Actually you don't need to call EA to get the activation reset. It took me 5 minutes total to chat with an EA rep via their live chat support -- I'm good for 20 more installs he said. Very painless and not that big of a deal.

even better then

OP, unfortunately Steam has been accepted as acceptable DRM. I held off from buying any Steam games as long as I could. However the holiday/weekend sales are sometimes to great to pass up ;). That and when I bought a retail copy of DoW2 and Empire Total War Steam was forced upon me anyway.

To answer your question doesn't Steam allow you to run the game in offline mode? There should be a setting in the preferences or options. I don't have Steam on this system so maybe someone else can give you better directions. Even if you can I'm not sure its any faster.

I'm waiting for steam to load. Just like Games for Windows Live.A joke.

o_O

Um. neither takes a long time to load. Steam might take longer if you have it set for all games to update automatically (and steam platform update) just turn it off and put it to offline mode. It's not a long time hah! also GWFL loads up right when the game loads up too. It's not a seperate load time.

To go offline mode you must start up Steam every time you want to play.

I use steam on a daily basis and never have any complaints about the software. Steam launches all my games from its gaming launcher, so I don't have all that clutter on my desktop anymore. I buy a lot of games on Steam these days, so I do not have to worry about loosing the stupid cd keys no either. 99% of the time I never have any issues loading games. The only time is after a TF2 update and all the files didn't go through the update or something along those lines.

Can anyone of you guys on this thread show pics of Modern Warfare 2 retail dvd or steam copy.Piracy is illegal. :D

+1.

I tend to view most complaints about Steam with a generous amount of skepticism; especially when someone says it performs as badly as GFWL- and it clearly doesn't. That's just spreading FUD IMO.

Steam and GFWL to me are about the same. They both are required to run your games if you don't have them then you cannot play your game. The load time is the same.

GFWL is integrated with the game so it takes the same amount of time to load as the game does.
Steam starts up in only a couple seconds unless something is wrong with your computer.

You know what's even more painless, and even less of a big deal? Not having install limits.

You didn't specify how long it takes to load. 30 seconds? 60 seconds?

If you have a shortcut to a Steam game on your desktop or start menu, steam will load the game instantly after loading itself. I fail to see how this is noticeably slower than launching a non-steam game from a shortcut. If steam is taking longer than 10 seconds to load, something is clearly wrong or your hardware just isn't up to par.

A lot of people actually use Steam to manage their non-steam games as well because it gives them a consolidated game list. I keep Steam running 24/7 anyway, clearly you don't.

Steam takes about 1 1/2 to 2 minutes to. Besides GFWL nothing and I mean nothing else takes that long to load. GFWL slows the game load. And to leave Steam running all the time is a waste of resources. I use game explorer for my games but steam does put any icons in game explorer so that's another thing that sucks.

What are you gaming on, a Pentium 133 MMX? Steam is using 22MB of ram right now. Out of 4 gigs, I think I can spare it.

That article is a little out of date. June 26, 2007. That wasn't made with Windows 7 Game Explorer in mind. The game Explorer in Vista is different then the one in Windows 7.
