Is the Snapdragon 845 a battery hog?

Normally one would expect more modern chips to consume less power. But many of the reviews I have seen show Snapdragon 845 devices having far shorter battery life compared to its predecessor, the 835.

For instance, phonearena.com shows the Pixel 3xl getting 7h39m and the 2xl getting 8h57m. Something similar for the LG V40 vs V30. It is hard to compare the 2 on an apples to apples basis, however, since they may have different screen and battery sizes.

It's hard to compare like you said, but for a probably irrelevant comparison switching from a pixel xl to a pixel 3 xl and using them in identical behaviors my battery life went up by a substantial amount. Even beating on the phone it still does way better.
I know it's not like comparing two same generation models etc, but my point would be given the larger screen and smaller battery I couldn't picture the 845 being particularly "flawed" in this capacity because of that.
