Hello fellow H's,It's been a week or so since I posted anything but I was seriously thinking about picking up a PSP and I was wondering if you guys thought it was worth a purchase.I know Tekken is coming out soon for it,but other than games does it do anything else that would make the purchase seem more justifiable.

Thanx in advance for the feedback

I thought it was cool and I've played one that my friend has, but the thing that really turned me off was the battery life. I also don't see how UMD movies are a plus. Who wants to watch movies on that screen and who wants to pay a premium for a movie you're gonna have to buy twice if you want to watch it on dvd?

It all boils down to what games you like. If you like the classics then go with a DS Lite, if you like the newer stuff that you can get on any other platform then go with a PSP.

P.S. Metroid Prime Hunters is BEASTLY

Yes, it is. There are quite a few good games out for it. It's ability to play movies from the memory stick is really nice if you have the opportunity to use it.

I got one a couple weeks ago and I love it. In addition to games, it has a photo viewer, the ability to play back videos (must be MP4 with AAC audio, but there are free converters for it), and, if you have the right firmware version, a web browser and audio RSS reader.

If you have a PSP with firmware 1.5, you can also run a whole lot of good homebrew apps, including emulators for classic game systems and ports of games like Quake and Doom, not to mention a whole pile of other things like ebook readers, IM/chat clients, etc. You can run a lot of these things with firmware 2.01+ as well, but you'll need a copy of GTA: Liberty City Stories to boot them, and some of the more advanced homebrews will work only on 1.5.

There are plenty of interesting games on the way, and quite a few good ones out now. Here's what I have:

    GTA: Liberty City Stories
    Lumines
    Ridge Racer
Syphon Filter: Dark Mirror (awesome game, even compared to console and PC games)
Mega Man Maverick Hunter X (excellent remake of the SNES Mega Man X game)

Edit: Ignore UMD movies. You're paying a lot more for a lot less compared to a DVD, and if you have a decent sized memory stick, you can convert your own DVDs to play on the PSP.

I think its definately worth a purchase.

While I understand your points I don't think they are enough to not want to get it.

*Battery life is actually very good considering the screen you get. I get 2 hours out of mine on 1 battery. And since BB was selling replacement batteries for $9.99 I got 2 more and now have 6 hours...The battery is extremely easy to swap.
*Watching movies on that screen is far better than watching anything on an IPOD or anything else portable at that size. You have to compare it to other on the go movie players....I find this far easier, less cumbersome and great quality when put next to $200 dollar portable DVD players.
*UMD movies are kind of interesting yes...but not a bad move (I wouldn't buy them no...unless they dropped the price). The part the voids that negative is that with the push of 1 button I can convert my DVDs into MP4s to watch off my 2GB memory stick. So I can have 7 movies and 200 songs on my memory stick and be ready to go. With memory stick prices coming down having 4GB or more won't be a problem soon.

BUT...the DS lite does have games that you won't find on the PSP. They are different beasts if you ask me. DS is a good classic gaming thingy. The PSP is more of a portable entertainment system. Movies, Games, Music, Picture Viewing, Internet etc. etc.

The PSP just plain sucks... for me at least

its battery lifetime its a joke.. also having a disc drive on a portable like that .. It just sucks battery like madman..

games.. well they all are pretty boring.. execpt for metal gear acid (looks like a good game havent played it tho)

maybe the homebrew are its good enough just to justify the big bucks it costs

Ill get a DS and play Castlevania and New Super Mario Bros for HOURS!!

and im not even counting on all the fun the GBA library has

as ususal sry for any tipos

I don't get these complaints about battery life. Mine does just fine, getting about 4-6 hours on a single charge even when playing games or watching videos. Besides, it won't kill you to plug it up and charge every now and then

    Also known as:
one third to one half of a transatlantic journey (airport to airport)
    one significant layover
a quarter of a bad layover

If you plan to travel, plan to buy an extra battery.

It's not crappy, as long as you take care of your system. Besides you can always replace it for cheap.

I would highly suggest purchasing one. I can't count how many hours of enjoyment I've gotten out of it. Besides, with new features in the near future coming (camera, GPS, keyboard) it's well worth the price.

Actually I would scope out used PSPs, especially on this board, as there are some great deals.

For me it was totally worth it.

I paid $275 for mine with a 1GB mem stick. With 1.5 firmware I can play Game Boy, Game Boy Color, and Game Boy Advance games without having to lug a bunch of cartridges around, and I can also watch tv shows on the go.

However, I agree that the UMD's are a complete waste, and the games leave a whole lot to be desired, which is why I have a Nintendo DS, which will be traded in next week for a DS lite.

and YES.. i have a DS as well.. so don't bother mentioning the DS to me.. i like it too..

i would love to one day.. see a PSP thread that doesn't have someone mention the DS.. or.. a DS thread that doesn't have someone mention the PSP...

The PSP really didn't cut it for me. I got it last year around May. I was pretty much forcing myself to use it; I put music on it...but I already had an iPod. I bought a few UMD movies-but watching those paled in comparison to the home theater. I just couldn't find any use for it, and there were no games that justified my want to play games on a handheld. So I traded it to a mod here on [H] for a 17" LCD monitor after about a month.

II would say it's not worth it.

Yeah.. I'm in the same boat as the "it was good for a little while but then I got bored of it" crowd. The games just didn't interest me.. I Had GTA, NFS, MGS: Acid and a couple others. They all left a very 'meh' impression with me.

I am the proud owner of a DS now :D

The games on the PSP look more interesting to me than the offerings on the DS, but then again I'm not really into any classic nintendo titles.

There are some pretty good J-RPG ports for it, and the media player functionality is beyond that of any other portable.

Seeing as my digital camera already takes memory sticks and I have a small army of them, I will probably end up picking one up myself soon. The last portable system I owned was an Atari Lynx, which rocked the socks off of the gameboy at the time, but alas went the way of the dodo...

Another plus is that you can be sure there will be some nifty wifi love between the PSP and the PS3, so, I am really looking forward to seeing what Sony ends up doing there. I might end up picking up the PSP when I get the PS3 this november.

Its the opposite, How long untill you sell the PSP. Ive heard to many stories including myself, of people selling the psp because it sucked. Most got DS and are very happy with it.

Don't think I will... alot more games that interest me on the DS, let alone old GBA games and whatnot than the library that the PSP has.

hrm it's hard to compare the two, sort of like apples and oranges. there will be people who like the ds and some who enjoy the psp. i got the psp when it first came out and i enjoy it. of course i must admit there was a period where it just sat, but after a while with the firmware updates and stuff it made the psp somewhat more interesting. ironically i use my psp more often for reading comics and watching stuff on it. the games out for it is also enjoyable, such as ridge racer. i recently got virtual tennis and i've been hooked on that. either way i think it is worthwhile on picking one up, a lot of good uses.

how come its apple and orange? they are both supposed to be a handheld haming machine , while the psp has more use to it.

Dont get me wrong , im not flaming the PSP or the DS.

for games : DS is the winner
for everything else : PSP is the best choice

if you own a psp you can play some homebrew ... try buying a 2.0 firmware psp if you can

    I disagree...

I think they are both great for games..

The DS give you an interesting gaming experience.. while the PSP gives you a more traditional gaming experience.. i personally am glad i have both.. in my opinion.. they are both worth the money....

hrmm i guess the apple and orange comment was a lil far, but the reason i said that was how the ds was aimed to be a purely gaming entertainment system, especially with the duel screen concept. the psp tried to go for a more all in one multi purpose system as we all know, such as movies, music, imagery, internet usage, and etc..

i do agree both systems have great games, just a different approach on how it interacts or attracts gamers.

i'm primarily a console/portable gamer, and i play/own all of the current systems. about the only one that i rarely touch is the PSP. my overall opinion is one of disappointment, which is frustrating because i really had high hopes for it. i have the 1.5 f/w, so i've gone thru the emulation/apps phase, and still, i find myself turning the PSP off and finding something else to do. i'm selling mine soon, so i guess i'd say that the PSP is really only worth a purchase if you're aware of several games for it that look like fun. i'm not. ;)

I like the PSP but I gave up playing GTA because of the horrible ghosting. To be honest, I just sold my blue Nintendo DS about an hour ago on eBay to fund the new Nintendo DS Lite. The PSP sucks, if you want it to watch movies or whatever just buy an iPod.

I have a PSP. I got it cuz it was so purdy in white. Well big waste of money, there are hardly any good games and they come out so slow. GTA was pretty good but got old fast like all GTA games. Maybe when the official PS1 emulator comes out it will be good.

DS games are so much more interesting than the PSP theres no contest. The PSP looks good on the surface, but it is severly lacking in being a gaming machine. Top off the redesign of the DS with the small, beautiful DS Lite and it makes the PSP look like a real waste of time and money.

    *I'm a former PSP owner.

Actually as of late I've been using it more for films. They are great to pass the time away with at work or waiting to get from point A to B.

UMD movies are a joke, especially if you already own the film on DVD. I would only considering buying a few once Sony stops production and distribution of UMD movies. Which looks to be the case in the near future, that is if sales keep dropping.

Nintendo DS can run homebrews nowadays along with being able to play GBA and Nintendo DS roms, so the PSP homebrew scene debate falls flat in my view. The PS1 emulation should bring some life back into the PSP should it deliver and not be a half-assed gimmick.

If you consider a half-assed commentary report being a summary of the life of psp...it was mediocre at best.
